1.
Thanks Joe, I have copied and pasted both responses to her so she knows that he is sound
Tell her to bring a tuner, I went round recently & every one of the basses ranged from a couple of tones to a full fifth flat! Spent more time tuning than playing, not good. Keep in mind too that most have got rubbish strings so it's difficult to tell how they actually sound. He seems like a nice guy though.
2.
Is it an illusion or is the neck very wide at the nut - what is the measurement there?
Just an illusion because of the blocks & binding, it's a very comfortable neck to play on. Will get it measured up later today.
3. Beautiful cobalt blue jazz 5 from the Fender Custom Shop. Got this in a recent trade & whilst it's a stunningly good bass, I'm in the process of buying a new double bass and need some funds to go towards it. Specs Made in 2011 Ash body Birdseye maple neck Rosewood board with blocks & binding Fender noiseless pickups J-retro preamp (original Fender active pre is included too) Ramp (removed at present) C & G case with all case candy (CS certificate, leather strap, strap locks, manuals, tags, picks etc) Weight is 9.6lbs 19mm bridge spacing 1.875" nut width Condition-wise, the neck is spotless. On the front of the body there are 2 v small nicks in the lacquer & the back has the usual surface marks associated with a proper gigging bass. You're more than welcome to come round for a cuppa & try out the bass in Catford, SE London. I won't post this but I do travel often with my work, so may be able to deliver in person depending on where you are. £1750 ono *No trades please*
4.
Chris is a great player/seller so if you are looking for a French bow I would check this out. :-)
Cheers Geoff!
5. Also check out Joel Quarrington's exercises, a lot of which is based around Petracchi. Lots of v useful stuff all in a cheap pdf download. http://joelquarrington.com/store/
6. Petracchi - Simplified higher technique
7. Same here, only my main bass has a name. He was made by a guy called Tarantino, so naturally his name is Quentin!
8. And the new year de-clutter continues... D'addario Kaplan heavy set, approx 6 months use - £50 Thomastik Belcanto G, brand new sealed - £20 2 x Pirastro Original Flatchrome C ext - £20 each
9. Top of the range pickup from Schertler from a couple of years ago. It's in as new condition (I just don't really use it anymore) & sounds miles better than the standard Dyn-b pickup. Can be used on any string instrument, guitar, mandolin etc. RRP on these was around the grand mark when they were available. *NOW SOLD*
10. Good quality student bow made in Germany under the W Seifert brand. Nicely balanced with a weight around 136g (no idea how accurate my scales are but it doesn't feel overly light or heavy). You're welcome to try it out in London SE6 or I can easily post within the UK. *SOLD*
11. Emanuel Wilfer 5 string swell back made in Germany in 1999. Excellent condition (maintained by Laurence Dixon). 109cm string length. Even sound across all registers with a powerful low B. Equally good in orchestral & jazz settings (v punchy pizz!) Used professionally in various orchestras & theatre pit bands over the last couple of years. Only selling as my main instrument has 4 strings with extension & I need something similar. *SOLD* Based in SE London Wilfer website - http://www.contrabass.de/e_index.html
12. Those look like very nice basses indeed but I'd be wary of stumping up that amount of cash when you haven't played any of his work before. There's a wealth of amazing instrument makers here in the uk. If I was in the market for a brand new instrument, I'd be talking to Roger Dawson & Laurence Dixon. There's also Martin Penning who's a bit closer to you in Somerset.
13. Thomastiks gone. GHS £20 posted
