Yeah, having said what I did about the stingray, I'm pretty much always plugged into a sansamp. So maybe stingray + sansamp was just a bit much, but it works with the P. 

Similar scenario here: liked the look and tone of the stingray, spent ages trying to get good sound out of it but nothing. Back to the P bass and there it is... 

Is there really a market for making fake bass strings?

Does the type of cereal box affect the tone? I think Frosties boxes sound sweetest but I could be wrong.

Yeah not a bad idea! 

I'd probably hand him my bass and ask him to show me how he'd play it. If he came back with something like "well you're the bass player" I'd be tempted to pack up and leave, or insert my bass up his backside to the 12th fret. 

Good stuff, always love a DIY job, makes an instrument your own. May have to nip wilkos and pick up a couple. 

Think I read somewhere that he uses guitar amps for top-end grind, which he tends to have plenty of, but most of the meat is straight from the desk. I figure they're probably mostly just for looks. Better than having washing machines I guess...😉

Rev Willy G resurrected the brand I believe, so that may have something to do with it.

Got a roadworn P and I get pretty close using a sansamp and d'addario chromes instead of rounds. Just can't get on with them.

Ah okay, that changes things. Well, as @therealting says, sand down to wood then oil that baby up. Since it's nitro, a decent grit sandpaper should chew right through it.

That's a pretty decent guide to sanding, just don't rush and sand too much in one spot!
