Yeah i've hung from plasterboard before, didn't bother using plugs either, just nice long screws straight into a stud.

How high to tune before risking breaking a string?
budget bassist replied to stevebasshead's topic in Repairs and Technical
Just so you know, i find stringbusters.com to be pretty handy for ordering single strings, they do almost everything. I've used them a few times. -

How high to tune before risking breaking a string?
budget bassist replied to stevebasshead's topic in Repairs and Technical
The other week one of the bassists for one of the other bands had a 5 string bass and the rest of the band were in drop B and he knew he wanted to use his low B string but didn't know how to tune it, so i ended up doing it for him. Basically i kept his low B as standard and tuned the other 4 strings up a tone. I don't know what guage they were but they were absolutely fine. -
Hi Basschat. I play a 5-string Warwick in a Metal band, but I never use the G-string, just the 4 lowest B-E-A-D. So, I figured (since I really enjoy the Precision 62 re-issue I use for blues), what if I set up a 4 string with 130, 110, 85, 70 or something, and tuned it B-E-A-D? Will it work, and will it be any good? regards, Henning
Warwick actually make a corvette that comes with that setup as standard so yeah, you may need a new nut, or you might be able to file it a bit, but yeah it's perfectly possible.

stingray copy? High price?
fair enough...I've got little experience with MM reps, so I'm trustin you on this'un!
I've owned a couple of ray copies in my time @ above ^^ yeah OLP are one of the only companies i find that make nice copies, not to say there aren't others out there but i trust OLP more than the others. -
Wow, at that price and without knowing that was at crap convertors i wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, especially with 0 feedback. Knowing it's at crap convertors... i definately wouldn't touch it!! EDIT: just realised somebody has installed a jazz pickup in the neck position on it, REALLY wouldn't touch it!
balsa is a hard wood. go make a balsa bass! I would love to hear what a body made out of pitchpine sounded like, i guess not good. ANd you would wreck all your tools cos its so hard.... good question warwickhunt. I am safe in the knowledge that if i pretended i could tell the difference i would get it wrong.
Balsa isn't ply wood Also softer woods (like balsa) tend to blunt tools much faster than really hard woods like maybe bubinga etc
-
I suppose you're right, but i just think the whole collectability part of it is a little bit silly, childish even, it's meant to be played, nothing more and nothing less.

Personally i have no idea why some people have a preference over the pre-EB rays to the current ones, they don't sound a great deal different and they're no better in construction, there really isn't much difference. If anything the new ones are better. Not sure why the sales are suffering though. They are great instruments, oh well, i suppose it sets me up to get one around christmas rather nicely!

I think with passive basses woods seem to make more difference than actives, for example my alder bodied SUB bass with the same electronics, pickups and hardware as a stingray, sounds almost exactly the same, if not exactly the same as an ash bodied ray.
Also, where does it stop becomeing a topwood, bodywood and accent layer and become plywood?
Plywood is cheap nasty stuff made of softwoods such as pine etc. All decent electric guitars are made from hardwoods.

stingray copy? High price?

Unless they're active i find they don't tend to even come close to sounding as good as a musicman -

I dunno, it doesn't look like agreat copy, really the only copies i've seen that are particularly good are OLP, and it doesn't look like one of those... seems a little high to me -

Ah yeah that's a good point, shill bidding maybe -
Someone must think this is actually a stingray, which it obvously isn't, i can't think of any other way for it to have that many bids on it...
mind you, all except one of the basses i've owned has been second hand, so i've never really had a pristine bass anyway.
I've had 5 basses, and they've all been second hand, currently in the process of buying two more second hand ones. It's so much cheaper and as long as they're not trashed then i don't mind. I did play skinny string for a bit, i only ever had one and that was £170 new, and inevitably i was annoyed when that got bashed about a bit, so i suppose it's better buying used, you can't get too annoyed about bumps if it already has them.
are the pole pieces on the pickup staggered ? just curious...they are on my sabre
They are on my SUB bass, i found that lifting up the treble end up a bit made the higher strings a bit louder, obviously, but they were a bit quiet before. You might as well make the bass your own!

Yeah lemon oil does darken the wood, but only for a day or two i find. Though i'm starting to quite like the grain on my MM's fingerboard, very pretty. I didn't like it much before.
-
yeah i just tune the open string then fret the note at the 12th fret and move the saddle accordingly, rinse and repeat.

That looks pretty sweet man, like the thru blue. I like that white one too, i have a thing for white basses. Also i'm not that into the SRX series. I've tried a 4 string but the 5 i tried had a REALLY chunky neck. I don't mind my chunky musicman necks, but that one was a bit too far IMO.

I'm not too anal, as long as the bass isn't overly worn. My tobias had a farly decent sized ding in the back and a fair bit of buckle rash on the back when i bought it but it was too good a price to turn down. I tend to watch out for switched out electronics as when people don't know what they're doing they can really mess a bass up and general wear and tear. If it doesn't look like it's been through a wood chipper then i'm not too bothered!
