Last night i was tightening the screws on the bridge on my tobias because i noticed the end of it doesn't actually touch the body, not sure if that's right or not, but one of the screws sheared off. It's a 5 string bass and a 6 screw bridge, will it be fine with only 5 screws or am i going to have to get the end of the screw out and replace it? and if so how? as it's still in the body. I can post pictures if need be

on a side note lemon oil is good for cleaning the back of the neck but not the board itself if it's maple. You shouldn't need anything more than water on that. On the body any sort of polish should do. On the last glossy finished guitar i had (i don't like them much so i haven't had many) i used £2 car polish from wilkos, that stuff was really good.

My three beauties - in the new 'gallery' space in my gaff
Exactly! That's why I keep my basses balanced precariously against/on top of my amp
A friend of mine's american fender strat's headstock snapped off when it fell over during that earthquake because it was leant against his amp... it's no laughing matter -
It does sound nice and it sounds good VFM but it looks godawful

go for the geddy, i'd never touch a gibson bass.

wow, i'm not a fretless OR a P man but that black/black/ebony looks NICE! Though a bit of wear on the paint and pickguard would soon ruin it -

I wouldn't mind one of them but that one seems a bit battered... hence the low price

I'm 17, been playing for 3 years and my current setup is as follows: basses: musicman sub bass tobias toby pro5b custom amp: ampeg BA115 effects: behringer BOD100 morley bass wah And yes that is my xbox propping the tobias up in the first photo
how can you possibly afford that at 17??? if you live at home, i hope you pay your parents rent, as you can clearlyyyy afford to!
What i was thinking! And i thought my setup was pretty nice for most 17 year olds!

glad to see you've found something you really like. Me? i think i'm a bit of a musicman nut now. I really like the inlays on that jazz too! are they custom? Also sucks that you've shredded your finger, it's always a bugger!

Just water and a cloth. Maple necks have finishes on them which rosewood and ebony etc etc don't because they need constant oiling. Just use water as it won't damage the finish in any way. That should get rid of any of the dirt on the fretboard, and if it doesn't you're a scruffy bastard! (if you have a nice thick buildup use a credit card or something to scrape it off first)

still, i wouldn't mind one of the lower end MTDs, i've not heard anything bad about them. I'd love to try one of the new bongo 6's too! (thankyou john myung!)

To fit guard or not to fit guard? That is the question!

white guard
Cheeky monkey I was toying with the idea of a see through one but thought it would spoil the look somehow. I was thinking of getting one made in a matt black (sort of like the pup cover) or a vintage white pearl but hey ho, something else came up and it went. Nicest smelling bass I've ever owned.
Care to elaborate on that? XD -
It's the knobs not the pots he wants to swap. The knobs aren't wired to the circuit board; they're attached to the pot shafts!
Some people get them mixed round sometimes.... usually people that aren't too good on the tech, if he means just the metal knobs to replace the plastic ones then yeah. If he means the actual pots no.

I use vaseline, thought it doesn't last long.

With the QC things, yeah you are right there, there's a couple of blobs where the finish hasn't been applied properly, there's glue on the fretboard and the wings dont match (check the photos, it's very apparent). But apart from that i do think it's a nice bass for £200. @ above post i actually like the asymmetrical neck, it feels really slick to me and for a fiver it's really thin too, which i like, lets me play with a lot more fluidity. Also MTD basses aren't that expensive, you could pick up one of the cheaper ones for about £600 ish? There's a couple on ebay at the moment actually.
-
I actually saw that the other day looking for jazzes on the bay and thought it looked pretty damn nice, sadly i didn't have the cash. If i had £400 for a jazz though that would have been the one.

Cheap Warwick £175! streamer 5 string STD.
budget bassist replied to Shockwave's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
damn! that's stupidly cheap! i would have been very tempted to buy that and sell it on for a profit.. -
My god, the paint job on that is awful! look at the photo of the headstock, that one really shows how bad it is... i can't believe he's got that much for it!
MB1. Id take it back ,but check its nothing else first, dimmer switch?flourescent lights?.try it in another room,if its still doing it, take it back. However watch out for SODS LAW,which basically goes, the minute you plug it in, in the shop, it doesnt make the offending sound and makes you look rather silly. This has happened to me previously.
Haha been there done that got the tshirt

No the musicman pots wont fit because they are wired to a circuit board and the jazz control plate is the wrong shape. However years and years ago (1980's, maybe before that, i'm not sure when) they used to wire them just as loose pots like in your jazz but they would be fairly expensive, hard to find, and even harder to find given the fact that since your control plate has 3 holes not four, you would need to find the 2 band EQ (volume, bass, treble) which you rarely ever can as most people buy the 3 band (volume, bass, mid, treble). If you can find it and afford it congrats but personally i doubt you will and if you can you won't be able to afford it. EDIT: oh and all musicman circuits are active (except the passive sub but that's wired to a circuit board so again that wont fit) so if you did buy one you'd need to find somewhere to fit the battery and i'd be willing to bet you wont fit it under that control plate so you'd have to route a cavity in the back for it and drill a hole through. I'm thinking that's a lot of work for a squier and ultimately won't be worth the time and money if you can do it. So that's a no really...
spot on. the bubinga one is the 'pro6B custom'. the 'toby pro6' are much older, gloss finish ones that were sold through music yo years ago. they then briefly introduced the custom ones and the acoustic toby's (which now seem to have disapeared of the face of the planet, much to my annoyance) then stopped selling them which is when they started to be sold through sound control i think...
Do you know how long it's taken for me to hear that? The music shop i bought mine from (it's the bubinga toby pro) knew nothing about it, i emailed gibson, they told me it was a toby pro 5 and sent me a copy of the original ad which mentioned nothing about bubinga.... i emailed them again twice more and they just danced around the question like i hadn't asked it. I have to say, gibson customer service is appalling in my experience. So mine is the toby pro5B custom? (also i don't think it's as bad a bass as matty589 is making it out to be) thanks
The BTB isn't over-trebled and string rattle on any instrument is a setup issue. I owned a bubinga Toby Pro 6 and it was a very poor sounding bass. B was flappy and undefined (even with £40 DR's), pickups were weak as and oiled finish was very cheap-looking. I tried a couple of other Tobys too and the general fit and finish was nowhere near what Ibanez offer. You could of course swap the pickups but a couple of EMG or Bart soapbars will be 50% of the original price of the bass, taking it into a different price bracket. I saw some other Tobys in what looked like quilted maple with a gloss finish, maybe they were better? The irony is that both brands could well be made in the same factory in Korea!
To me they were over trebled, it's not a fact, it's opinion. And it's funny how every ibanez i tried in that price range had string rattle isn't it?
