I've never played a fender i REALLY liked... in fact the best 'fender' i played, was a squier VMJ.... (i've not played many, but they just don't sound particularly special to me) I rather like ashdown gear actually, although the combos tend to be pretty awful IMO, especially the 115 ones. As for their stacks - woolly my arse, come see me play live and tell me i have a woolly bass sound, i dare you!

Megadeth bassists. Ellefson vs Lomenzo
budget bassist replied to charic's topic in General Discussion
It's a redundant argument IMO, lomenzo was only really with them for one or two albums and probably didn't write many of the bass lines, and what was on them was nothing special anyway. Ellefson was an absolute monster and IMO, the heart of the band, he held everything together. Mustaine seems to have realised that he can't really be replaced and he's back in the band, rightly so. As clarky said, lomenzo seemed like he was just a hired hand. -
I did name them.......... Apparently the humour got lost somewhere
Quite probably, I should stop posting on here when I've been drinking!
The only time I've ever had a problem in a music shop,is in a certain shop in Birmingham-I won't name them but it's opposite New Street Station and sounds similar to Fair Deal Music. I been in to the shop numerous times and never had any problems, but on this occasion the guys in the shop wouldn't let me go look upstairs where the Basses were because I was wearing an ankle length coat.If they'd have asked me if I minded removing it or something I would've done, but they didn't....just that I couldn't go upstairs because of my coat. This will be about 3 or 4 years ago,so it wasn't like I was kid or anything. So,I just walked down the road and spent my money in Sound Control instead.
You won't name and shame them yet you give their exact location? Just name and shame.

Haha you're right. Go to some music shops and try them out, you're the only person that will know what's right for you.

ahhhhh cool, is that yours then??

As long as it hasn't been completely trashed by the previous owners, I don't really care that much. A few dings/scratches don't bother me too much.

is that a gibson lp junior or something?
Hey, any news?
Hi mate, it's coming along! I started prepping the control cavity ready for some stuff but i didn't bother posting, may be going into notts later to buy all the necessary electronic gubbins and i may sort out the control cavity cover later if it doesn't rain keep your eyes peeled! I'm hoping to have this finished relatively soon now -
hmm, not seen this thread for a while! I'll have to take some shots of the latest incarnation of my rig as it's changed a fair bit since i last posted it two years ago! Plus, i'm not going to be a teenager for too much longer

I think as long as you're polite in a lot of places, they don't mind you trying things out. A local shop in notts that i go into reasonably often to try stuff out is always more than happy to let me try things, but i try not to take the piss with it. I generally only buy small things from them, strings etc, but i know if i asked, they would more than likely let me try their top end stuff, but i don't bother because i know i won't buy it. I brought a friend in a while ago though, he asked to try a little blackstar valve amp, he asked to try it with a gibson les paul (he owns one), in a lot of shops, that might have been met with raised eyebrows and a "can't you use this epiphone instead?". But no, they let him use it, no questions asked. He tried the amp, and came back half an hour later and parted with £400 for the amp. It's a two way street, and customer service goes a long way. By contrast, me and the same guy went into another local music shop about a year earlier (music room in victoria centre, yes i believe in naming and shaming) and asked to try a roland micro cube (yep, a £75 amp) and was asked by the sales assistant "are you going to buy it?" before he got one for him to try. Of course, he said yes, he tried the amp and then walked out and bought the amp from a different shop with less snooty sales staff. I always treat the staff in shops with respect and always ask before trying an instrument and take off my belt/jacket etc when trying something out, and i'll try and make some light banter with the staff about gear, and i like to be treated with respect too. If i get asked "are you going to buy it?" before trying something, you can be damn sure i'm not going to now, to me it just seems rude, especially if it's a fairly cheap bit of kit. Besides, how do i know if i'm going to buy something before i've tried it? I try to be loyal to local shops too, there's one i always take all my repairs to, as i've always been treated well in there and had speedy service, as has everyone else i know that's been there. I wish i could say the same for some other local shops.

I tend to anchor on the bridge pickup a lot, it seems to be perfect for that, they don't get in the way though, whether picking or slapping etc... For the music i play, i do tend to stick to the bridge pickup 98% of the time though, but it is nice to know that you have the option of the other one.

Not at all, played a gig with it last night, it KILLED!

Yep, like bigredX said, i won't even bother trying a bass i don't like the look of, 9 times out of ten. Not because it has to fit with some image or that i "wouldn't look right" playing it, but just personal preference. E.G i'd never buy a ritter (if i could afford one) because i don't like the shape and they're a bit OTT for me. But also i'll choose a bass on playability and sound, if it doesn't play/sound right, then i'm not going to buy it, regardless of how it looks. Granted i did that with a stingray HH a while back because it was very pretty, but only because i had no way of trying it in person. I soon sold it on when i wasn't happy with how it sounded or played.
