The really cool looking relic instruments with classic wear all have a thin nitro finish. If you bash about a MIM Fender with a thick poly finish for thirty years it'll get scratched & dented, but never wear through like a nitro finish. Attacking it with abrasives will make it look stupid & you'll look stupid playing it. So I say - do it.
This, you can't really relic a bass with a poly finish, it just doesn't work. It's a shame so many companies use poly finishes now, they just won't look good 30 years down the line

how much does a decent bass cost?
budget bassist replied to FunkyFinger's topic in General Discussion
It depends what sound you're after etc etc Go out and try everything, and i mean everything, whether you think it's pretty or not. A bass that you don't think is that attractive may play and sound amazing - in which case, the looks will probably grow on you. Personally i think the most i've spent on a bass was around £650 for my warwick streamer $$, and it's a fantastic bass. I'd love to be able to afford some sort of custom built bass brand new, but i can't. £600 or less will get you a surprisingly good used instrument for your money. In fact £300-£400 will get you a very nice bass! It all depends what you want. -
ah yeah didn't notice the bridge and that, the shape looks about the same from what i can tell with my streamer sat next to me!

Squier Jazz Classic Vibe - undergoing make over
budget bassist replied to Grand Wazoo's topic in Bass Guitars
That looks udderly fantastic! Love it The pink bits and the fact that you matched the stickers up to the pickguard just make it that much better! -
I've seen metallica a couple of times and rob's playing was pretty solid, though i'm a big metallica fan, and i really do hate death magnetic, i don't see how anyone can think it's close to their earlier stuff at all. I don't see how that bass is any different to a streamer CT other than the inlay though.

New(ish) musicman basses - Classic Stingray & Stingray SLO
budget bassist replied to Quatschmacher's topic in Bass Guitars
I think You're likely to find one in london than anywhere else, due to the larger concentration of music shops etc.... but even then you might have a hard time. Here in notts, the only musicman basses i've ever seen in the shops have been stingrays (there was a SUB once as well) -
New(ish) musicman basses - Classic Stingray & Stingray SLO
budget bassist replied to Quatschmacher's topic in Bass Guitars
Yeah i've been aware of these for a while, they look pretty cool, although i'd almost certainly never buy one. Unfortunately musicman basses seem to be rare enough in the shops here as it is, let alone one with an SLO neck or a classic ray or anything -
Yes " balls" were on the end of the strings kindly donated by Hartke, virtually everyone won a set of 3!
I didn't, i got me a soldering iron instead (thanks!), now i have no excuse not to finish my musicman project!
Just a thought, but is there any prospect of one of the local retailers sponsoring the room? ie they pay for the hire of the room, on the basis that can bring a few bits of kit along for sale. I would have thought the prospect of a room full of local gear geeks / GAS victims would appeal to them?
Yeah that could be a good idea - one to ask shep (pantherairsoft) about as he works at the guitar and drum centre. It might be an idea to get on to fuzz as well, they have some interesting stuff.

Would be good to see you two there, pete!
So were the grosvenor willing to take booking with no deposit? How many of those showing interest actually attended?
Yep as far as i can remember probably half to two thirds of people turned up, though i worked out that if you charge £3 on the door, you only need 17 people to turn up to pay for the room, i paid for it and ended up with a little sum left over which i donated to basschat
-
I never understood it either, if you've never played guitar before, then surely it shouldn't make a difference when you start out. I know a guy who's lefty but plays righty guitars (i've only just realised that in my head just now) and gets on fine
-
Yeah, i've been the same, then i bought a $$, loved it, traded it for a stingray HH thinking it would be similar, they weren't the same at all, got another $$ and i'm pretty happy with it
-
I think if (like me) you can only afford one bass, versatility is a good thing. I really only use one sound from my streamer $$ most of the time as it's my sound and i like it, but it's nice to know that should i want something vaguely fenderish, then it's there. Versatility isn's everything, but it is nice.

Sorry, i'd better not tell you about the superb build quality, tonal range and MASSIVE sound then eh?
