Back on topic, The GK 2x12 MBE is a good choice if you plan on being sensible and using a step-by-step approach. However, you could always get a bank loan (or sell a kidney) and do what The Dark Lord suggests
So you buy a relatively expensive and good quality amp head, but you're after cheap speakers? Nice one.
There are good reasons for this. Once you've got a fantastic amp head, you likely won't need to upgrade for a long time (if ever). He may have blown the majority of his budget on his head, and wants to get a cheapish cab to get his rig up and running for now. Then he can upgrade, swap and generally reconfigure his cab setup later - but the amp will always be excellent. If you do it the other way round and buy a cheapo amp with a fantastic cab (or even 50/50 and get a decent amp and decent cab)... the whole rig will sound like sh*t, then you're just going to need to buy a new amp soon to justify the money you wasted on that fantastic cab. And then what if your new amp doesn't get along with the cab in question? You have an expensive logistics problem on your hands.

Honestly, I think there are quite a few soundmen who panic when they have to deal with anything that isn't a standard 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drum set config.

Congratulations, I bet it's fantastic!

More powerful than you need - this is a good thing! You want whatever you get to be more powerful than you need.

I want to get one of those pitch shift pedals. £55 for a pitch shift pedal? Fantastic.
-
Nope - fully aware of that! In fact, that's the only usable mode on the Big Muff! Normal just sounds completely empty and 'bass boost' ends up sounding too boomy. I keep it on 'dry' all the time. It does have a volume boost but that's not usually a big deal as you probably want a bit of a boost anyway. Thanks for the link to the mod though, might consider that later!

This is a mega-bump, but I just wanted to say that I'm not surprised the Beehive Mill guys accepted a big cash buyout instead of honouring their deposit. It's hit and miss for them to even honour a booking these days... for that precise reason we rehearse at Blueprint now

Another not a dodgy sander job.....

Wait, it ended at 99p with no bids? I'd have took it for a quid... what happened? Wish I'd have read about this yesterday... Or did it have a reserve? -
Although I have looked up MXR EQ pedal and I can get a used one for 45 quid, I think this might be my answer for now. Thanks Ultima. (*Quick question: should I put the pedal in front or behind my fuzz pedal in my chain?)
I have mine after, though it depends on how you set your amp and how you like the sound. Advantages to both: EQ -> Muff -> Amp: -This controls the sound of the original bass signal, so it doesn't effect the sound of the fuzz very much. Do it this way if you really like the way the Big Muff sounds on its own, and want to have a play with how the bass sounds 'under' it. This is good if you don't mind tweaking your amp settings too. I personally don't get much out of this method though as I love the natural sound of my bass to bits and purely want to get more punch and presence out of the fuzz pedal. Muff -> EQ -> Amp: -This will control the sound of the bass signal and the fuzz combined; it's better for if you want to tweak the sound of the fuzz as well (ie boosting the bass here will make the fuzz itself more bassy, whereas with the previous method the fuzz will sound the same, but on top of a thicker bass sound). The disadvantage of this method is if you don't mind tweaking your amp EQ; you've already got an EQ after the Muff so it is doing the same thing over essentially. I prefer to keep my amp set a very specific way though. Later on you may want to look into getting some form of line selector/looper/whatever they call them anyway and have it set up like so: Bass -> Line selector. Line selector send -> Muff -> EQ -> Line selector return. Line selector out -> Amp. This will allow you to switch both the Muff and EQ at the same time, giving you more flexibility with the Fuzz Chain (EQ/Muff) without affecting your clean bass tone. This is what I want to get a line selector for as I'm very happy with my clean tone, and I just need a presence boost on my fuzz. However, since you want to tweak the sound of your bass to sit better in the mix anyway, you'll probably find that you want your EQ always on anyway so you may not need to bother with the loop selector either way. But yeah, I recommend trying out the EQ and see how it goes. It's definitely the right tool to get yourself sitting better in the mix in a band situation anyway!

Yep, this is the GAK deal. Except you can get Nectar points! If it was 8 ohms, I'd have been all over it. But 4 ohms? Makes me a sad panda.
Is it modified? That looks like a knob where the switch should be.
Not sure, if I was in London I'd probably go in and ask more about it.

Short scale for less than £200! Perfect for little hands!

That Harley Benton for 45 quid... I wonder if its actually playable (for a kid/beginner) -
Just give them a ring 0844 8111116
Thanks! Also, someone needs to buy this, for the love of god: http://www.gumtree.com/p/for-sale/yamaha-bb1600-vintage-bass-guitar-1985/113263596 '85 BB1600? I'd take it if it wasn't in London (and if I didn't just spend £450 on a cab/amp)...

Shame Yamaha doesn't do a short scale bass. That I'd buy. -
I run my Muff with an MXR 6-band EQ. My EQ is set as follows to help cut through: One problem is this does make my non-fuzz tone a bit 'plunky' (probably because of the treble boosts). The mid cut at 800 helps to avoid a commonly boosted guitar frequency range and might help your situation too (my band's guitarist is quite middy too - we play bluesy jams sometimes). I'm going to get a line selector or something so I can have this and my Muff in their own little switchable loop, so I can switch them at the same time - if you have an LS2 you should be able to do the same thing
-
I think separates. Less strain on your back cause you can move it in two trips, less strain on your wallet because you can buy it in pieces (amp first, cab second). Also, you can upgrade modularly; if you buy a good amp, you can buy a decent cab later - then when you need an upgrade, get another cab. Then replace your cabs with great ones. Then upgrade amp.. etc. Whereas with a combo, when you want an upgrade you can maybe get an extension cab.. but then you're stuck replacing the whole combo after that Plus head + cab looks better!
Bit like having an ashdown amp
Ha, if my ashdown was any brighter I'd have to send it back! As it is I can't dial in enough fudge!

I have the same cab running from an Ashdown ABM500. Just got it today. I didn't find the horn buzzed or anything, but at the same time I'm keeping it off anyway 'cause I don't think it adds anything that beneficial to the tone, and I've heard that using distortion tends to ruin them (I'm using the amp/cab to run my guitar in stereo as well as using it for bass).

Dilemma (4x8 Ashdown Mini, Genz Benz 2x10, Other?)
Ultima2876 replied to Ultima2876's topic in Amps and Cabs
Got mine today! I'll post a proper review after I've gotten more acquainted with it, but my first impressions are that I'm very satisfied! I saw the box and immidiately thought "holy crap, have I made a mistake? It's huge" but despite the more formidable size than expected it was light enough to carry up two flights of stairs with ease (and I'm a videogames programmer so not exactly the strongest guy around!). Paired with my Ashdown ABM500, I can quite easily get to uncomfortable volume in my loft-room. About 12 o'clock on the volume (with 11 o'clock "input") gets me to the comfortable point of feeling the rumble, annoying the neighbours and not hurting my ears too much. I think this thing will be capable for any gig I have to throw at it, and if it isn't I can very easily add another (kind of tempted to pick up another one next month anyway, even if I don't strictly need it. I mean £200 - why not?!). I also love that I can run my guitar through it and it sounds great for that purpose too - I've actually got my guitar set up through it (and my other guitar rig, in stereo) and it has never sounded better. I have the tweeter turned off and the full range of both my guitar and bass is excellently represented (with the tweeter on I can hear very little difference, slight hiss, more string noise etc. It makes my fuzz sound a little more 'jagged' but I actually prefer the tone without the tweeter on all counts). Cons would be the expected - as has been mentioned, you knock on it and it sounds hollow. I say big whoop - it doesn't sound particularly 'boomy' to my ears, and doesn't feel particularly flimsy. I don't have the sudden urge to pull it apart and mod it. Perhaps compared to a cab three times the price... but you'd be paying three times the price. It sounds fantastic and for the money actually seems very well built. My biggest complaint would be the carry strap - I would have loved side handles, and the carry strap actually seems kind of small and tight. I have huge hands so it's maybe a little bit of a squeeze. If I had two I definitely wouldn't attempt one in each hand. It also looks great in person. Pics: All in all, well worth the £200. I'd have been happy if I paid £400, maybe even £500 for one of these. -
I hate hate hate the wait

RBX170 is a fantastic beginner bass. I wasted my money on a Squier Affinity Bass... I regret it as much as I did when the knobs started falling off. Enjoy your fantastic bass, and give a BB series bass a shot if you ever want an upgrade! They're amazing!

Fair enough mate, I'm actually going by what I've seen the 2x10 compacts for around here, so you might be right!

A: I don't think you'll get that much for it; they seem to usually go for < £200 B: Wrong forum There's a dedicated forum for selling stuff! This one is for discussion. Good luck with the sale
