Me and Jerry last year in Southampton. In 94 I did four shows as the bass player in a band backing James Burton too. Nice chap but very tight... Jerry on the other hand is a very nice chap.
Yes i met Jerry as well. I think he is a verygiving person, and you can see that when he plays. he comes across as connecting with the crowd, and i think that is the difference in musicians who are 'look at me type' and ones who do it for the love of music, and to share that with the crowd. It really comes across. When i do a gig, and its buzzing, its not about what you'r playing, but about what your giving, and people can feel that connection. I think anyway

The one i had was the opposte, all treable and low on bass. Personaly i would not bother, and would look for a squire jazz or something like that. They do a nice active one with a slap control. For the cash, its great.

I run a duo www.bsharpduo.co.uk we do functions / partys and i also do disco's. I guess when you make a living from it you have to go where the cash is and for me thsi is it! To be honest i don't mind what i do in music as long as the people are havong a good time, and so am i. !

What gear is at the harrogate bass bash ?
greyparrot replied to david_l_perry's topic in General Discussion
HAve my own function duo www.bsharpduo.co.uk Also now and again do deps with a band on the essex circuit, and more recently moved to doing disco's. I earn my living from music, and to be honest weather i'm playing bass, or doing a disco, i love the buzz of the people enjoying thmselves. -
Ha ha thats what i like about it, the drive. I recently saw this band live, and although they are old boys now, they still kick like the old days. I think music should have a few bands bringing back the drive like thin lizzy did, or ian dury's band, or the stones, Level 42 All powerful super tight live bands.. Even seventys bands like chic earth wind and fire, great bass lines in popular music.

How often do you guys practice between regular gigs?
greyparrot posted a topic in General Discussion
I play between 1 and 2 gigs a week, and practise about onces or twice a week. Well noodle really, for about 30mins a time, and some hand exercises. Just wondering what you guys do?? i have been playing for a while (27 years) and sort of stopped speed practise, playing along to stuff, and copying stuff, just noodle really in front of the t.v.(normally during east enders!) -
Hi, I'm in "trouble"... I'm going to buy a new bass but frankly... I don't know much about 'em! I'll give you some details: I want an active 4-string bass that's good for playing & rock with... So that excludes Fender The price is €1300 min up to 2400€, that's $1700 to $3100 (bit more is ok to...) I need help on following things: ------ Brand: Wich is the best brand? I was thinking about Ibanez, Warwick or Washburn? Model: What model range is the best of that brand? I know with Ibanez it's SR Prestige, but that's all.. Wood: What woods are good? I've heard Ebony or Mahony are great? Other tips you can give? ALL help is welcome!! Thanks in advance, Ward Cauwenberghs edit: Anyone know any good brands for custom made basses? And is it worth with my budget? Or is it better to buy a normal one?
Buy mine! £2500. Or one of he spector US basses. I have played many but these are just fantastic.
I wouldn't even agree with that, it's not a fair analogy (although I do see your point). Fender would more accurately be described at the Ford company itself, rather than one of it's base models... a company that gave the world the most usable means of transport to the masses and a company that gave the world the most usable electric guitars at the time. That to me would seem fairer.
We invented Tennis but now we can't win it! As said, i think the fender bass is great, but for me, not big enough sound pallet. They are not cheap. A u.s bass new is nearly a grand, so not really far off custom prices. They in this day and age just don't cut it as an allround bass, and the slap sound on a p (unless its preamped) is in my opinian dead compared to other basses in the same proce bracket. Id get a good squire jazz, and modify it, or better still a sandberg/lakland p or jazz bass. I played a lakland D.Dunn and in all fairness, the P. bass was not a patch on this, but at the end of the day, it was'nt a Fender. I have noticed though that some stock fenders sound and play very different in the same model range. in the same shop i picked up 3 p basses and they were all so different.
I'm selling my squier vmj bass I bought a few months ago, hardly used to be honest, it has a full set up and new set of strings, comes with a rockbag gigbag and fender strap. I can get pictures up if people want once i've worked out how to hell of a lot of bass for the money, i'll probably regret selling it but need the money ! I'm looking for around £190 but open to offers of course Dan
Where are you based please?

Fender basses changed music in a way, as they were the inventors of the P. bass. Of course before that they had upright. Today, fender is an icon, and i think that the quality of the top end gear is geat, as is the sound of the jazz. It still among all the basses available today a cool instrument to play, nd they do look great! But i think they are wanted for the fender image rather than what they offer in terms of sound. The U.S. P bass i had looked great, and great to play, but had only one sound, which was not good for me. Fender are an icon, and you pay for that, but for a £1000 i would not choose a fender, but for £400 a mex jazz would be perhaps near the top of my list.

What was your first bass and why did you start playing?
greyparrot replied to damo200sx's topic in Bass Guitars
mine was a kay P.bass copy that i got on the way home from my last day of school. (27 years ago!) I used to and still do love hearing elvis 70's concerts, and i always loved the sound of the bass. Jerry Scheff and Ronnie Tutt (drums) puts down some fantastic grooves (and still does) very advanced for the time was the tcb band, full of power, speed, and guts. Their should be a few more like them! -
Anyone explain how the ohm's thing works ??
greyparrot replied to tonybassplayer's topic in Repairs and Technical
Hi The one thing I never seem to have got my head round is ohms. Can someone explain how the matching should work in simple terms when an amp is matched to one, two or even four ( in the case of pa ) cabs and probably even more important how a mis matching could cause damage ( ie what to avoid that will damage and what it is not ideal but workable ) Huge thanks and looking forward to being enlightened later today Tony
yep the more cabs you have the less resistance, the more volume. an amp running at 4 ohm load is capable of handling two 8 ohm cabs linked together. You will get more volume and the amp works harder. But if you use to low load, ie 2 ohms on a 4 ohm amp you will blow it, the amp, and possibly the speakers as well. be careful with matching cabs. -
I honestly think that you need to go to an established luthier when you're having an instrument built, someone with a fine reputation, you may pay a bit more, but you get the instrument that you want and generally get good after service. My top ones are as follows - Martin Petersen (Sei bass). John Diggins - I've known John for about 20 years, and he really is great and very helpful. Rob Green, I bought a Status a few years ago, when it arrived I noticed slight swirl marks where it hadn't been polished properly, nothing major, but they arranged to have it collected from me, they re-polished it and I had it back with me within 48 hours. Chris May from Overwater, I've played a few Overwaters over the years and they've all been really great basses.
2nd Rob green, i had a status made, was wonderful, out to play jazz has it now.
I don't doubt what you said....why should I ? just seems a very strange attitude for a luthier to take. As we all know word of mouth is the best publicity and I for one cannot understand his attitude. Maybe you could enlighten us more now you have let the cat out of the bag and slated him in public (metaphorically speaking)
I am talkng about my exp. as a customer with that one bass. I am not slating Mike as a person, only that particular bass i had. I cannot say anymore about any other zoots, cos i never went near them again, nor never will, but i have seen some beutiful basses coming out of the work shop. Mine was too, the woodwork on the body was lovely. It was an off the shelf part finished bass that had been lying around, and i had him finish it and so got it a little cheaper. At the moment, i have a hand made Stu Spector bass, which is nothing less than stunning, and works perfectly! mind cost £4K!
It would be interesting to get Mikes take on this episode , maybe a quick call from someone who knows him well or is dealing with him at the moment ?
HA ha like he will agree! get real mate. WHat i said happened. Of course many others have had good from him, but as i said, i had a pig. As i said the day i got it it looked great, then it all went down hill. Just my exp. I have bought a 2 or 3 nice basses from mike, but factory ones, and always found him a nice chap. I justthink i had a bad bass, and it always seemed to have a problem.
What worries me about GP's story, more than anything else, is the implication that the luthier completely waved his hands of the whole affair and left his client out of pocket.
That is what happened. I asked him to sort the action out, got it back 3 weeks later with the bridge saddles as high as poss! so no attempt to sort the truss rod by the look of it, just a quick fix. anyway, a few weeks later once again the strings were back on the fretboard. The electronics, there was far too much mid, and no bass, and very noisy pots. He said that i must have been rough with them-not true, hardly used it, as bass was unplayable always faulty. As with the fret wire sticking out, he did take a file to them, and said he would sort them properly on a later date. Mike to me done a botch on that bass, and why i got this service i dont know. although i like him as a person, i felt sad that the first bass that i had made for me was a mess. Took me months to pay for. HAd about 1 good month out of it. lost about £800 on it.
I've had several instruments from Mike Walsh..... all absolutely outstanding..... Shame you had a bad experience GP!
As i said i had a bad exp, and that was enough for me, would not do it again. I belive that the neck was dumped and it became a frettless, and re sold, thats what i heard anyway.
That story worries me, somewhat.
Why?

I did have a Zoot (boudica) made once. Cost £1250 - It was a compleate joke. Looked great, sounded great then about 2 months later, the frets started to poke out of the profile of the neck,(both sides) cut my hand!, then the electronice went wrong. And then the neck twisted. On many occations i tried to have it repaired by Mike only to get excuses back. In the end he offered me £400 for a bass that was unplayable. I being fed up, took it, and part exed it for a six string indi which i had for a long while, fantastic bass. Half the price but 10 times better. Not sure if the bass (boudica) i had was a bad un or not, but sorry Mike, your a nice chap, but that bass he made for me was a right f..k up. would not touch one again. Was about 5 years ago now. Bad exp.
Because Fender doesn't make basses that look like a lottery winner's dining table?
They do custom shop as does Spector take a look at mine in the for sale section!
