Well if are budget constrained and want the absolute maximum volume level per £ then I would suggest one of these http://www.gak.co.uk...ex-4-ohms/17430 honestly you will never need more volume than this is capable of even with a relatively modest amp but it is a total beast to move about coming in at over 100lbs in weight [edit - I see in the small print its discontinued but a 4x10 from a "cheap" brand is the way to go for volume on a budget]. You could save even more cash by going 2nd hand and I see that there are currently two peavey 2x10's on ebay and you could likely bag the pair of them and have change from £200. I still stand by my first replay that a single well chosen well powered smallish cab is loud enough for anything but that answer was made from a money-no-object perspective.
Thanks for the good advice. I'm not really in a hurry to buy. If I was then some cheap peavey stuff would be close to the top of the list, I've used them in rehearsal rooms and served me fine. I really asked the question to define more what I need so I knew what I needed to spend. As long as band situation carries on as is then I will have plenty of time to save for the right thing, now I know what that is.
I've got an Orange terror SP 2x12 combo and a matching extension cab for sale in the 'amps and cabs for sale' section. That would do the trick... Either a 2x12 or a 4x12 combination.. And it's very portable....
Yeah I've lusted over it many times! Unfortunately I don't have the money at the moment. I asked the question to narrow down what I'm looking at and plan how much I need to save/spend. Would love that rig though!

Do you compromise "your sound" for a decent mix with band?
Iheartreverb replied to Iheartreverb's topic in Effects
Thanks for all responses guys. To set the record straight, I don't have a massive ego and I am a fairly introvert and very easy going person. Just generally my concern was that there was some parts where the bass is the only instrument heard (or lead) and although I know need a sound that works well in the mix I think at these times I wouldn't like the sound in its own. I suppose using EQ presets on the sansamp would be the trick. I have practiced maybe 4 times since posting and have adjusted my EQ each time to sit better. It was never a situation of compromise but I wouldn't feel fully comfortable with a sound I hate. Thanks again guys and sorry this has some of you fairly riled up! -
fiest off, I know this seems odd in the effects forum but this is pedal related. In short I like my bass tone nearly/or all the way off. So quote bass heavy (or treble lacking). It just sounds really nice to me. The next piece of the puzzle is that I'm going into a programmable sansamp (which is famously mid lacking) and in short, my band mates hate it. Firstly they don't understand what it does or the need to have. So my question is probably two things, Do you compromise your tone for something that mix's well? (It's worth adding we are an instrumental rock band and there are times where the bass parts might be the focus so my solo sound is also important) I'm using the sansamp because I don't like the massive EQ shift when using a drive so this allows me to blend these really well while changing the gain levels and output a bit. I also think it will be mega useful down the line for live. I just think like the they don't like my eq with both bass and sansamp (used 100% wet) with extreme time cuts p. Any/ all advice appreciated Cheers!
Where abouts are you based. If you're near either Twyford/Reading area get yourself to BassGear, they stock TKS cabs, which are super lightweight and super loud and sensitive, plus they looks AWESOME! If you're nearer Brighton contact Barefaced Bass as they again are stupidly light and stupidly loud! Both have exceptional reputations on here among even the busiest of us. I'm currently torn between going for a TKS or a Barefaced! Doesn't help I'm not certain on which amp I'm after yet either haha!
I'm in Glasgow. And we have plenty of music shops but I find it hard to try stuff out at the volumes needed and get a gauge of if it works without a band context. Thanks for some quality answers everyone. I think I might just save for a good 4x10 and that way I would never want anything else

Hi all, For sales or trades are the following. Please read descriptions properly and understand the condition of these guitars. I will add photos when not doing This on my phone and can be emailed or messaged to anyone who wants to see them. 1997 Korean Squire Tele Gorgeous maple neck (always gets positive comments, recent custom cut nut and std tuners) Really nice weight body, slab on belt cut, string through the bridge, no string holes through body. Body has been sanded and painted black and sanded. Looks semi relic but not done well (I was 17!) gaffs tape on both strap buttons and on body next to them. Has been wired as esquire but not done well and would need rewiring. Neck pickup not included (unless I find it somewhere) But does play and put out a nose in current state. White esquire, perloid while (and if I find it, original white) pick guards included. Oval screwed on Jack socket has been added. Included is moulded soft case. Sort of looks like a gig bag but is foam mould for tele and can go on back. Squire vintage modified Custom tele SOLD Any questions please ask. Again, photos can be provided. Hope this works... http://s12.photobucket.com/user/deanjones999/library/ Please take these off me!

thanks for looking in guys, yeah, it's another one of those threads. I am well aware that the volume is dictated as much by the cab (size/ amount of speakers) as it is by the wattage of your head. Thing is, I just don't know what I "need". Every single practice rooms we have ever used has a 300/500 watt head running (reduced into an 8ohm) 8x10 cab. So I have never played with anything other than an 8x10! I've never seen a band play live with less than a 4x10 even in tiny venues. This will for now at least be going into our own practice space and eventually (not much of concern now but I'd prefer not buy more later) gigging. I'm looking at something like an ampeg PF head, maybe an Orange bass terror, but that sort of ball park. Should I be looking at 2x10, 1x15, 4x10? We are a pretty loud band and one of the guitarist is using a Fender Twin. Usually I'm running my volume just less than half on an Ashdown mag 300 that I'm borrowing. I just don't want to buy a cab that won't hold up or need to add another later. There's a really complimentary thread on the new Fender rumble 500 which I like aesthetically but not sure if it's more of a practice amp than something serious. Any and all help appreciated Any questions, fire away Cheers all....

I'll head over right now mate. Recently bought my first short scale this week! A fender musicmaster with new/added pickups. I love it so much I'm already looking for another for different tunings!
The notes on your bass are the same as what notes the guitars have, regardless of tuning, they'll simply appear at different locations if one is detuned and the other isn't. It's quite possible for you to play in standard tuning instead of drop C# like the guitars, but when the guitars are playing a low C# on their open lowest string, instead of you mirroring that, you'd need to play the C# on the 4th fret of your A string (or whichever position of the neck you choose). The reason why most bass players will mirror the tuning of the guitars in this instance (if not playing a 5 string) is so they can get the low note equivalent of what the guitars are playing, maintaing the octave spreads between the bass and guitars. As guitars become more and more detuned, they obviously approach the basses sonic territory, no-one ever got excited about a bass player who is always playing in the same register as the guitar player I spent years playing in C Standard (C, F, Bb, Eb) because both guitarists were tuned to that, not because I couldn't play the songs in standard tuning, but because I wanted the low C note on my 4 string, tuning the rest of the strings down simply meant I was still tuned in 4ths (intervals between strings). Si
Loads of help as always Si. Thanks
Sorry, I misunderstood. Yeah, drop the whole guitar down one and a half tones. Will be fine. You'll need to make sure you've got higher gauge strings to improve the tension though, otherwise the strings might be a bit flappy and uncomfortable to play.
I'm sorry, this is pretty much unknown territory for me. Will it not sound odd if I'm playing in a different tuning to the guitars?

Not a fan. I understand their practicality but don't really like them

Hi all, So my band decided they want to start writing again in C# tuning. My issue is I don't like any drop tunings at all, nothing where the low string is dropped lower than the rest. We used to do everything I drop D, which is wasn't keen on. Anyway, any advice on what I could play instead without it sounding terrible? I read that Kim Gordon is still playing in standard when the guitars are in C# on sonic youth albums. Failing that, will C#standard/ C Standard/ d standard work? Open auto any/ all advice. Cheers!

I still can't manage to find pictures (or for that fact availability) of these new ones in anything but fireglo, help anyone?
-
£75 posted for sale is my MXR M80 preamp/di Amazing clean sounds Good (but modern sounding) distortion channel Noise gate Colour on off (you could have a clean and a mid-scoop channel) Come with box and manual, I will post photos when I can but is in perfect condition. I have had this for sale once or twice before, at every point I have been let down by a seller for the next item I was planning to buy so have always ended up keeping this. If you have been in touch before do not hesitate to do again, this is a genuine sale. Any questions please ask

Does this mean there's gonna be an influx of VT Bass's and Sansamp's hitting eBay fairly soon then?
-
Haven't played on but been toying around with buying a bass driver too and a custom fuzz. Spoken to him on and off a few times and seems to offer a top shelf service and the prices are good. A note for bassists is he always has said he can mod anything for bass (although his stuff seems to be transparent-ish by nature) for free.
