Thanks everyone. Some really solid advice. I don't have a budget as such but I know for the same price as the pf350 there is loads of options from other manufacturers. I just wanted to see if I was right in needing to get something new. The Ampeg is only borrowed anyway. Thanks again, good explanations

I'm using an amp borrowed from a friend in our practice space and I'm just struggling to be heard. I'm using an Ampeg ba115 against a fender twin and a tiny terror. To me this seems to be the point, the amp just doesn't have enough to compete but want to make sure I'm not wrong. Next. What would you recommend? I'm looking at a PF350 possibly but I don't (because I have never had to before) understand speaker sizes. Would the same amp be louder through a 4x10 from a 1x15? Is it sending the same signal to 4speakers instead of one? It seems like using a bigger speaker with anything less that 400/600 watts is daft as your under powering the cab, am I right? And why is the "perfect match" cab always 8ohm when the heads are 4ohm, does that not deliver less power? I understand there's a lot of questions in there but all help appreciated
Weird this. I've just sold my expensive USA Jazz because I've bought 2 new Squiers, a 50's tele in natural & maple and a VM amber precision. Both superb instruments and for what I play (church) and my level of incompetence they are more than adequate. Also bought the £100 HB Jazz My Gas is fulfilled unless.......... That said I have an SCPB-2 in my box.......
Thinking about one of those Precisions, how is it? Wish it had a lacqoured neck!

I played a BA115 recently as it was at a mates place. Could barely hear myself with a drummer and two guitarists. Nothing special about the tone either.
Seriously, most of the tone of an instrument comes from how it is made. For example, in addition to my 4002, (yes, "2," not "1," nor "3") I have a custom half-fanned P-style bass that I narrowed the string spacing at the bridge and used a Rickenbacker humbucking pickup. Does it sound like a Rickenbacker? No, it sound like a P-bass with a touch more growl. Pickups alone aren't going to do it. Save your money and purchase a real deal.
You sort of miss most of my point. I'm not dying for it to sound dead on like a Ric, just to get an even balanced and usable tones from it. Given the instrument, aftermarket Ric pickups are the obvious choice to get an improvement, I'm clearly not gonna route it out for something else. If when I gig someone is stood there thinking to themselves " that's a nice tone but has more/ less (delete as appropriate)....(insert tone here) than a Ric" I don't think I'll lose sleep over it
What's the wood and construction of your bass and what's your desired sound?
I do most sound shaping at my amp with bass boost and mid cut and normally use all my pots on full in the middle position. The bridge pickup on mine is nearly unusable it's so noisey. I use the neck on its own a fair bit too but if I'm changing pickups is like to do the set so they balance. I play in a post rock band and play super clean more upfront parts quite a bit. Think Mogwai. Really not into the Ric sound everyone hunts for (Rush/Yes) with all that clanky treble heavy pick playing. Looking for more of a rounder less aggressive sound but not as mellow as flats with fingers Motown stuff. I got it because I didn't enjoy the Jazz I had and loads of bands I like have one (Grizzly Bear, Warpaint, I like Trains, Mogwai, Hope of the States) but the pickups are just rubbish
-
Useless comments aside. I'm not a tone chaser in the regard I need/want it to nail the tone 100%. I just need it to be useable and at present the pickups aren't
-
I'm upgrading the pickups on my faker soon. I'm really between official Rickenbacker ones (high gain neck and bridge) and Classic Amplification who hand make them in America and claim to be a more vintage spec. Can anyone vouch for either or help with a comparison between the two? Happy to consider other options as long as they fit within the budget of around £200 a set All help appreciated

Would be really interested to hear how they all sound on bass

Deffo a pedal train nano, I have 4 boss pedals on mine (look up Hosa for tiny tiny patch cables) and when transporting just fastens to my gig bag and I forget it's there.
-
I use a Little Big Muff on my bass board and te guitarist in my band uses a Bass Big Muff on his. Like someone said, it depends what you want to sound like. Any guitar effect can work on bass some more than others need an EQ with it.

Haven't got this new record yet but his first one Coastal Grooves is brilliant and Meldal Johnson is all over it! If you get into him check out his previous incarnation Lightspeed Chamption

It is an Aniversary branded bass which sells as Jayro in Japan. By middle I mean the middle position. I lose low end and the pickups don't blend well. I have had it converted to Ric wiring and had all connections re soldered and earth wires done. The bridge pickup is just noisey in general it's not a fault. The neck is more my sort of tone anyway but I sometimes get carried away changing pickups and knobs for certain songs (or parts of) so a p might be good to simplicity. Just trying to get some thoughts on wether I should upgrade these pickups or buy another bass with what would be a decent amount of money for something second hand
-
I have a Ric 4003 copy that I'm always having trouble with. I use the neck most of the time. I loose too much low end in middle (pickups don't blend well) and bridge is noisey and needs replacing. So I was thinking if a set of pickups by Classic Amplifiaction who do spec and highly regarded at that which when factoring in correct treble bezel is just over £200. I'm gonna need to sell off some guitar stuff for this but I'm thinking if I have £200+ in my pocket why don't I buy a used squier (probably a p for simplicity) or add a bit on and buy something new (quite like the VM black/tort jaguar). Any thoughts?
You want rosewood, racing stripe? Try the Mikey Way
Yeah but....silver flake? I'm not in a glam band! Have no issue with the humbucker but couldn't pull off that Finnish
-
Oh stop splitting hairs! Might not be the best use of language but was trying to get across that is I had a thing of 50's, 60's, 70's spec I could still be served very well by the Squier catalogue yet they still can't but together a faithful recreation of a mustang.
As a recent Fender Pawn Shop Mustang owner, I have to agree. I don't think the Squier offerings bring much goodness to the table. Then again, Fender's whole ethos seems to be to flood the market with random options in the hope that some will hit the mark and sell.
Sort of agree with you but I know I can sort of pick a model, a year and a colour and sort of find what I want with Squier without even needing to look at a fender. The mustangs just sort of seem like the weakest link. Would love of of those pawn shop mustangs but more than I have to spend. My biggest mistake was buying a copy of a bass beginning with 'R' that now of course I can't advertise or sell anywhere

Why are the Squier mustang basses such a poor desperate tattoo compared to the rest of the Squier range? I played one a while back and the neck felt cheap and the finishes and colour options are uninspiring not to mention maple neck! When the new VM guitars came out there was a unanimous round of applause over how they were so faithful to the models people actually wanted (jazzmasters and stuff) and this is also true of the basses. Why are the mustang so rubbish in comparison? Maple necks (which I usually prefer but isn't spec) and either black/black or 3TS/black. Come on, give us red and a speed stripe or better better still white/tort. Sorry guys, Rant over
The photos from the current Rancid tour have Matt Freeman playing one of his Squires, can't tell whether it's an off the shelf one, or a CS with a Squire decal. I'd like to think it was an off the shelf, but if I'm honest, it probably isn't.
I know nothing about rancid but soooo want one of these. Just perfect spec wise for what I would like and love the look too. To chip in though I think sig models should be based on artists customised ones like Johnny Matt and Billy Corgan rather than just standard instruments in non standard colours (Biffy Clyro). Really respect the folk who are actually using them rather than just doing for the indulgence of a colour sceame......and don't even mention Wentz

I have no help to offer. But I was given one of these for free a fee years ago and was by far the nicest bass I had ever head or played (I don't get out much) only it was fretless which I just couldn't come around to. Beautiful bass, if only mine was fretted. But tone, weight, neck everything was perfect....well done, as you were.
