  1. Quite "Gang of Four" in some respects.....I like it
  2. I would like to suggest starting with the Intro for Wherever I Lay My Hat (Paul Young) with Pino on bass, arguably it has to be the classic fretless bassline of the past 40 years? The intro is not that hard to play but challenging enough to get it completely right and, hopefully that will inspire you into the rest of the song which is more challenging but not impossible
  3. Hell yeah, the Vodka was long gone as was the cooking sherry I had even finished off the kitchen surface cleaner, there were nowt left but Malibu
  4. Chris makes a valuable point here, Mrs2611 decamped to the seaside over the weekend and sent me pictures of her and her mates drinking Gin on the seafront so Friday night after an argument with the remains of a bottle of Malibu I found myself in the depths of loneliness and the football had finished so I ended up having to order a Mustang Bass from the tinterweb...it arrives tomorrow......Mrs2611 goes to seaside.....Rog buys new bass....fair trade off and proof, if ever proof was needed, don't leave me alone on a Friday night with both beer and tinterweb
  5. The Classic Vibe series of both guitars and basses have always been very well regarded, I had the original Telecaster with the Pine body, that sounded fine, yes they are built to a budget but I do think they set a good benchmark for how good a guitar built to a lower budget can be
  6. As others have said a good self build will give you all the Precision you need, buy a body in the colour you like and buy either a US or Mexican Jazz neck, bolt the two together, set it up, add your choice of pick ups and hardware and away you go, my go to Precision is a bitsa bass with a Mexcican JB neck, that gets gigged more than any of my other ones including a near mint 79 Precision, a custom shop 63 Precision and a Mexican Roadworn......either that or look for a good JV Squier
  7. The Skoda Octavia hatchback will fit a smaller bass hard case width ways at the very rear of the boot, when I say smaller hard case I am thinking Precision light / Bass Collection type size, a full size Precision / Jazz case won't fit
  8. Well if you insist!!
  9. With a set of Beyerdynamic DT250 headphones I could hear from 30Hz through to 12500Hz as others have said my upper limit is above my tinnitus frequency, I did find that as we approached the 10000Hz mark I backed the volume right off to a just audible level as it started to get uncomfortable as we got higher, I am 52 now and have spent a lifetime on stage next to a drummer or stood at the front of some very loud punk gigs
  10. I very much doubt it is a genuine Fender, he has added a made in Indonesia claim which would, at best, make it a Squier bass, the unfinished truss rod access on the headstock is not something Fender have traditionally done, the only thing that makes me question that is our guitarist has a special edition Telecaster with a red headstock and an unfinished hole and that is definitely a pucker Fender.
  11. Surely the appearance of the bass doesn't matter at all, it is all down to the sound and play-ability of the bass? Here is a photo of two of my Precision's, both very different basses, on the right is a Custom Shop 63 heavy relic and on the left is a near mint 79 Precision. I brought the heavy relic 2nd hand purely because I couldn't afford a genuine 63 bass but more importantly it is a fantastic bass to play and with a brilliant sound, on the flip side I brought the 79 because I loved the way it looked and the condition of it, however, it doesn't play anywhere near as well as the CS bass and doesn't sound as good either....so one question....is the 79 bass in such good condition because previous owners have cared for it or because they haven't played it that much because it isn't a great Precision? The only downside to the CS bass for me is that I am not comfortable with gigging it in pubs just in case it is mistaken for a genuine vintage Precision and some scumbag decides to have it on their toes with it. I don't really care about the finish only about how it plays and sounds.
  12. I tried 5 stringers but struggled to get on with them and ended up selling them on, in Yodaclub my bass work tends to be higher more melodic lines which suits a 4 string perfectly, however, now I am also playing in a rock band I find I need two basses, one in std tuning and one in dropped to D, so I guess a 5 string would remove a lot of guitar changes on stage....but on the flip side, there are a number of songs with quite busy basslines which really suits a Jazz bass profiled neck where the benefit of a 5 string would be lost with a bigger wider neck? I will stick to the 4 stringers and put up with the on stage changes.
  13. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Darkglass-Microtubes-900-Bass-Amplifier/264217314641?epid=849622190&hash=item3d84944551:g:Cu8AAOSwT5tcT4R5 Just seen this come up for sale on Ebay?
  14. A brilliantly creative musician and a huge inspiration as a song writer, really sad news RIP sir
  15. As Pete.young has said, I would say it is an SB325, You got it for a decent price, I had a look at it but am not playing 5 strings anymore
  16. I am pretty sure both have been on the market for quite a while now. I wonder why there have been no takers?
  17. It's going to take a lot of time to get a 40-50 song set list learnt to a really good standard and playing it live will be the best way of really getting it nailed, I am sure some songs will come quicker than others, ask the band to give you a little more time on the ones you are struggling to nail by leaving them out of the set list for a couple of weeks?
  18. Simples, 1) I like the fact I don't own it. 2) it has sparked absolutely no GAS reaction whatsoever.
  19. I have an old Samson VR-1 which has got to be twenty years old now and still going strong.... I don't actually use it anymore as I doubt it is on legal frequencies but it still works fine, I only ever had to replace the power supply which failed some years back
  20. One suggestion that none of the above has covered is stage volume, if I can hear myself properly on stage then I am fine, but on a stage where the monitors are not so good or the acoustics of the stage play havoc with my normal setup then I find myself playing harder, digging in more which soon leads to a feeling that fingers are going to cramp. Another scenario is the dreaded sticky neck syndrome where your hand feels like it is sticking to the back of the neck so you are forced to completely change the way you usually play, this again for me will quickly lead to a feeling that my fingers will cramp....thankfully a quick wipe over the back of the neck with a bit of silicon spray has solved that issue for those lovely midsummer sweaty gigs.
  21. Ssshhhh we are not supposed to mention the Voldemort of luthery on here!
  22. I think the 2nd one is a steal with a buy it now for £185.00 with the hard case, if it's active then it's likely to be an SB301
  23. I have to agree, speaking as a life long punk rocker, was there actually a point where punk started and finished, I offer up MC5, New York Dolls, David Bowie, Dr Feelgood e.t.c all pre-date punk but certainly had that punk ethic, today's grime scene demonstrates punk sensibilities in being one of the few current forms of music where the lyrics still have an important message, other than that I would offer up Idles and Slaves as still in the punk ethos? Did Punk really have a beginning and an end, probably not but I'm bloody glad it happened
  24. And no doubt the van will be coming back to me and the customer will be outraged at the mere idea that some idiot could have jumped up and down on the roof!
