Big dots on my neck, set list, largely committed to memory, but also written in big letters and I look as cool as I did 30 years ago, just with a bit less hair🤣

When some BCers say they're not much cop at bass.....

I am told I can play but remain unconvinced! -
Ever bought gear you regretted buying?
Roger2611 replied to snorkie635's topic in General Discussion
Too much to list them all, a Rockbass $$ Corvette being the stand out turd it was horrible in every single way, Thunderbirds, I just don't get them...well stop buying them you idiot! A Custom Shop 63 Precision but that helped me understand why there are so many CS guitars looking for new owners, yes they may be great instruments but not necessarily the great instrument you wanted! A Spector Forte, it was nice but not that nice, a Mesa Boogie D800, yes it says Mesa on it but old school Mesa it certainly isn't -
Who would let me borrow their fretless bass for a show?
Roger2611 replied to SimBass's topic in General Discussion
If you can make an extra 30 miles to Northampton I have a Precision Fretless or a top of the range Bass Collection you can borrow for as long as you need it? -
Amazingly, I am gas free, I have more bass gear than I will ever need, I seem to have finally settled on the basses I need and am ever going to use, I just need to build up the courage to sell the stuff I really don't need!

I believe Prince was quoted as saying his favourite of his songs was Paisley Park which I think stands head and shoulders above pretty much anything else he did despite only just scraping the top 20 over here!

I am pleased to say I am not actually gassing for anything bass related for the first time in many years! I still want a Gretsch White Falcon but that has been gassing away in the background since the 1980's when Billy Duffy turned up sporting one and looking ultra cool with it!

I think Raidohead's The Bends would be very interesting, on a personal note I would love to see Stiff Little Fingers do Now Then but I doubt that qualifies as a classic album as even SLF's loyal following can never quite agree on that album!

Just buy it, try it, find you do or don't like it and decide the route forward from there, I have gassed for a Gretsch White Falcon since I saw Billy Duffy sporting his back in 1986, I still want one today, the pain doesn't go away.....that's it I'm off to buy a Falcon and the scratch that itch, I knew Basschat would help me see sense

We played with Midge Ure a few years back, he went on stage with a single speaker Vox Valvetronix amp and a battered Marshall blues breaker pedal and used an "out of the box" Vintage Midge Ure signature guitar and sounded every bit as awesome as you would expect an ex Thin Lizzy guitarist to sound, all in all he had about £600.00 worth of gear and about a million quids worth of talent...I was hugely impressed!

How old were you when you did your first gig?
Roger2611 replied to odysseus's topic in General Discussion
I think I was 17 or 18, it was at High Hall at Birmingham university in front of a 1000 people or so, nervous, not half! -
Is a new mass-produced bass ever worth more than £1500
Roger2611 replied to Beedster's topic in General Discussion
Yes, and IMHO spending £1500 plus on a mass produced bass may well leave you happier than spending £3000 plus on a custom built bass, unless you have the skills to be able to explain exactly what you want out of your custom build.....have a look at the sheer amount of custom shop instruments that are out for sale on eBay, all of them would have been dream basses for someone that didn't turn out to be the bass they dreamed of? -
Many years ago I played a farewell gig with a covers band I used to do sound for in London, the bass player refused to do the gig so the band asked me to play, I agreed as I had some time available to rehearse the set, the vocalist sent me through a list of 20 rock classics we were going to play....now for my first mistake, I checked with the vocalist that everything was being played in the original key...yes was the response! I turned up to the gig confident that I knew the songs well enough to do them justice but I had scored out a basic tab for any of the more complex songs...as they say "job's a good un!" It very quickly turned out that pretty much none of the songs were played in the original key with everything being somewhere between a tone up or down! I managed to muddle through most of it without making a complete fool of myself...the crowd seemed to be enjoying it so the band decided they would play some of the other songs from their set...songs I had never learned...I remember playing Queen's One Vision and I am looking at the guitarist waiting for a specific light to go out so I could see what chord he was playing....I enjoyed the gig and learnt a lot about being prepared and not relying on the vocalist to tell me whether it is in the original key or not!

I use the Digitech Drop, it's OK for a tone down but anymore and it sounds way too artificial, don't get me wrong it sounds artificial even on a semitone drop but not so much that your average punter would notice it! It's a shame as it works really well on guitar but just doesn't manage it on bass but, it is the best I have found so far!

I invented "banging bungalow" a few years back, it's like "hard house" but for those of us too old to manage the stairs! -

Travelling with a bass guitar in a roof box

Have you tried your bass in the boot, I had a couple of Octavia VRS saloons over the years and I could get two Precisions in gig bags immediately behind the rear lights (at the wide bit!) my 11 plate was slightly better than my 64 plate but even with the 64 plate the little plastic divider on the left can be removed to make it wider...not sure you would get a Thunderbird in there but anything Precision sized will fit in a gig bag -
I shifted a whole load of basses, amps and cabs through Bass Direct last year, I told them what I wanted back for them, they priced them accordingly and all but one (an ultra rare Bass Collection 801) sold quickly and I got back what I needed, I sold the 801 through a friend to his daughter in Brighton, she got a cracking bass for not a lot of money and I got back what it owed me, TBH it was completely hassle free!

I have the Digitech Drop, it is OK on bass, I used it for a full tone drop in the rock band I used to play in, it sounds OK but you can hear that it is a processed sound, it is more convincing on a guitar! If you can find one, grab one, they are an easy way to quickly change tuning as long as you are not dropping too far!

Totally agree Lozz, I find a setting I like on my Boss CS3 when practising at home then hate it as soon as I try it onstage, maybe that is the real truth about compression, it only sounds good at home!
