40 years since The Clash release their first album!
Roger2611 replied to itsmedunc's topic in General Discussion
I always preferred the US release of the album as that came with Whiteman in Hammersmith Palais, Clash City Rockers and Complete Control on it but Deny, Cheat, Protex Blue and 48 Hours were not, looking at them both side by side they were very different albums Looking at the dates the US version wasn't released until 1979 -
It doesn't really matter how hard or easy a track is to get right, that feeling of nailing it will keep you inspired for ages....well done!

I quite like it as well, you could do some serious damage with the pointy bits! My only worry is the forward strap mount can't have a lot of meat to be mounted into?

Sad news, RIP Gary and our collective best wishes to his family and friends

OK, this is a possibly weird question about gigging...
Roger2611 replied to Telebass's topic in General Discussion
Mrs2611 comes to most gigs in her capacity of photographer, roadie, gear babysitter and official wine taster! With the old covers band the girls used to use it as a social occasion. -
I love the USA Sub bass, I have owned 7 or 8 Stingrays over the years and had never taken to any of them, I still loved the looks but not the sound, I tried the Ray 34 and really didn't like that, anyway a £300.00 USA Sub came up last year so I brought it and, guess what, I love it, it is my main gigging bass now, so forward a few months and I was offered a 92 USA Ray with 3 band EQ and a maple neck for a sensible price, so I wondered, had I just grown into the Musicman sound of was the Sub something special? I used them both at a rehearsal and the band was in total agreement that the Sub sounded far better, more aggressive, more bite and sat better in the mix than the USA full fat Ray, so my question was answered, the USA Sub is something special! Get one whilst you can, mine is another one that is now permanently off the market!

EV SX200 or SX300 speakers, probably still the best non powered affordable speakers available, if you look long and hard enough you should be able to get a really nice used pair of SX200's for £250.00 mark
-
I think they all sound similar but all will sound slightly different, it is just a case of playing as many as you can until you hit on one that just sounds right, be that Squier, MIM, MIJ or good old USA or even a copy of.

I went to one where they conceded I was the best they had auditioned but unfortunately another guy liked Guns and Roses more than me so he got the gig....which was fine other than the band didn't actually play any Guns and Roses songs! They had the audacity to ring me up a couple of weeks later and ask if I would dep for them on weekend gigs because the new guy worked most weekends....I politely declined

I have the same bass with the twin soap bar pick ups, would I part with it for £300.00.......not a chance!
Given the stories about how pernickety Robert Godfrey could be about playing things right, I'm surprised you escaped with your life!!
I first came across the Enid at Reading Festival in 1986, I quite liked them but largely forgot about them, it then turns out Robert ran the Lodge studio's in Northampton, we were recording there and ended chatting with Robert, anyway, long story short, I ended up doing sound for them at the Shaw Theatre in London whilst Robert was recording his new album... he wanted help promoting it so we ended up getting involved, it quickly turned out that Robert had fallen out with everyone and anyone in the music business, promoters, agents, management and record companies, no one would touch him! He did turn out to be a bit of a nightmare to work with and our involvement was only a couple of years at most but I still see him occasionally and we get on fine. I think he still runs the Lodge and with Max as engineer we got some really good results from the studio but considering the gear he had and the previous reputation of the studio when it was in Oxford I think we knew we would get good results. The first album we wrote was recorded 1/2 at Whitfield Street Studio's in London with Paul Weller's producer of the time, the rest was recorded at the Lodge with Robert and Max engineering and producing, I would challenge anyone to tell me what was recorded in the same studio the Spice Girls used a week earlier and what was recorded at the Lodge!

Warwick Red Label strings, anyone tried 'em?
Roger2611 replied to stingrayPete1977's topic in General Discussion
I have used them a few times, there was nothing to dislike about them, if I can't get Elites I would happily use them again -
Changing genres and trying out in originals band - advice needed
Roger2611 replied to paddy109's topic in General Discussion
Just turn up and see what comes out, our lead singer lands us with a new song every couple of weeks "hey, this is great" and starts playing, no key offered or anything, I love just coming up with something on the fly and 9 times out of 10 the eventual bassline I settle with will be based very closely on that initial jam. Just go and enjoy it -
Foxton meets Hooky with a bit of Pino thrown in if I am playing fretless (well I would like to think I sound like Pino!)
This could be the cause of your problem. Try breaking up the practice time into one hour sessions then take a break. This is beneficial for both brain and hands/wrists/fingers alike. Incorporate playing without the thumb behind the neck for a couple of minutes, just to get an idea of how much ( or little..) actual pressure is required to fret a note cleanly. Do this, briefly a few times during the course of your practice, until the fingers "get the message" about how much pressure to apply.
Good advice indeed, you should find that with pressure from your left fore arm against the body you can actually play fairly comfortably without needing your thumb on the back of the neck
It's simple, there are a small number of people in the world with more money than they know what to do with. So do they use it to fund research to cure cancer? Help the poorest in the third world? Fund space exploration to further mankind? Nope, they buy trinkets to try and out do one another.
Where's the "like" button when you need it!

Looking to upgrade from AN Ibanez sr 300eb to a Yamaha BB424x.
Roger2611 replied to Mickyk's topic in General Discussion
There shouldn't be any reason why you cannot slap with the Ibanez, it is perfectly capable, the only bass I can think of that probably wouldn't suit slap is a Rickenbacker but no doubt someone will be along in a minute with a video of a Rick being slapped within an inch of it's life! The Yamaha has a cracking reputation, I doubt you would regret buying one -
New Spitfire Pickguard on my 64 Precision..!
Roger2611 replied to chrisanthony1211's topic in General Discussion
I really like the angle of cut on the edge bevel (if you know what I mean) so many of the aftermarket guards just don't show enough of the white under ply, I love the look of those original basses with the tort guards with that distinct white edge -
Degree Project - Need some market research
Roger2611 replied to cris the man's topic in General Discussion
Done, but question 2 could probably be worded a bit better as it confused me.....but then so do cows so that's not saying much! -
9V batteries - Duracell Professional or Power Plus ???
Roger2611 replied to dmccombe7's topic in General Discussion
Can't answer 1 or 2 but I use Duracell rechargeables in my basses and a block power supply if I am using pedals, there may or may not be batteries still inside, I can't remember! -
Just to add the bridge I used was a Gotoh 201B
I fitted the same bridge to my Tokai Jazz Sound, it was a straight swap over

80's Japanese stuff is becoming more and more desirable, Westone Thunder 1's being offered up at £400+ The worlds gone crazy! Thing is if people keep offering them up for silly money then the ones priced well over what they were a few years ago suddenly start looking more attractive and the assumed market value moves up. Look at Stingrays at the moment, most private sellers on Ebay are asking more for their standard basses than Andy Baxter is asking for the same basses, I think that suggests that in the current market most Stingrays are over priced? Another example being the USA made Sub bass, they are starting to appear upwards of £500 at the moment, they were £300 or so a couple of years back, I know that I have said Stingrays are overpriced at the moment so we seem to be seeing the SUB model moving into the territory where the prime models used to be found Fender Precision lyte's are being offered for silly money at the moment with beaten up incomplete examples being offered up for £400+ double what they fetched a couple of years ago. Prices for gear in general seems to be a lot higher than it was a couple of years ago, whether any of it sells is a different matter!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/fender-bass-/172572360550?hash=item282e1d3f66:g:lVgAAOSwzgBYxVN~ Found this on Ebay today, clearly not a genuine Fender, I have messaged the seller and explained why it is not genuine and what it is likely to be....I got the message back "Ok thanks" I assumed the seller may either pull the listing or at least edit it....it appears not. Great target for someone to buy it, wait until it turns up, rightly claim it is not as advertised and get Paypal to refund their money = free bass!

Whatever happened to...Pete Vukovic/Vuckovic?
Roger2611 replied to NancyJohnson's topic in General Discussion
Saw Three Colours Red on the same bill as 60ft Dolls and the Wildhearts some years back, 3 awesome bands, sorry no info on where Pete disappeared to though
