1.
One of the most overrated bands of all time IMO. Two or three good tunes, but Joe Strummer can't sing to save himself. Tuneless caterwauling.
I would agree, not the greatest singer maybe but some earth changing lyrics for me at that age and a massive amount of passion in the songs he "caterwauled"
2. There is a real flip side to this argument, some of the smaller "proper" music venues can have horrible acoustics, we supported a 80's top selling act recently in one such venue, fortunately I knew a guy who had played there regularly and his only advise was "use the in house sound man" we did and had a fantastic sound both on and off stage...the main band turned up and announced they had their own sound engineer who was quite capable of managing such a limited PA...they had one of the worst sounds I have heard in a long time! We are playing the same venue this Saturday and will be working with the house engineer again, it will be interesting to see if the main band turns up with their own engineer as they are a lesser known act from the eighties but have a good reputation as a live band
3. Sweet, baby short scale Bass Collection's...count me in!
4. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Bass-Collection-SB320-Left-handed-bass-guitar-/291965125935?hash=item43fa7a452f:g:AtwAAOSwo4pYR-Zi Surely this should find a Basschat owner? At less than a hundred quid at the moment I am tempted to do a Ronnie O'sullivan and learn to play left handed as well! No connection to advert or seller by the way
5. Ebay drives me potty at times, OK they don't email me, (not sure why you are getting emails about stuff you only looked at but I do get emails about any watched items ending soon or having ended etc.) what really drives me potty is the way it shows the last items looked at irrespective of who is signed in or out, for 2 years now I have had to buy my wife's pressies elsewhere as if it was the last thing looked at it would still show up on her profile or even on the unlogged in page.....probably something to do with IP addresses but a total pain in the butt and something Ebay seemed unable to understand why it could be an issue!
6. Bass player, backing vocals, creator of musical harmonies, anything technical, link between self appointed creative types (guitarist and keys) and drummer and general encourager whilst onstage......pretty indispensable really!
7. Lords of the New Church....knew I would think of one in the end (Stiv Bator of the Dead Boys and Brian James ex of the Damned)
8. The following 3 guitars have recently been stolen from near my London W9 home. 1961 Ivory Fender Precision Bass Modern Mexican Black Precision Bass with changed tortoise shell pick guard Blonde Guild D37 Acoustic with built in pick up. All were in soft cases. Please keep an eye out for them. A substantial reward will be paid for information leading to their recovery. Many thanks, Glen. Just spotted this on Facebook
9. I think it is extremely difficult to get it right without looking contrived, our lead singer insists on leaping off stage at every gig, I am tempted to bring a nail gun and nail the fecker to the stage but at least he is visual, in my old covers band I tried to get the guitarist so stop impersonating a tailors dummy and move around a bit, he staggered round like he had been shot, cocked up every song and was happily back to tailors dummy by the third song!
10. The old industry standard Yamaha SPX90 has a wonderful Harmoniser effect that sounds more Pino than Pino.....I love it!
11. Had a few DP150's over the years, looked after they were no trouble at all
12. Love a bit of Dr Pablo and the Dub Syndicate on occasions
13. I think Jedson would be another generic of this type of bass
14. Hi guys, just thought I would post this up, sadly it doesn't look like we will ever release it as the songwriter has decided it doesn't represent us anymore but I just think it is a great tune?
15. Swap your pick guards amongst your other basses, you can pretend for a couple of days it is a new bass, short term fix I guess but every little helps!
16. Wow, what an open and honest insight into a fantastic musician, really enjoyed it!
17. Cheers for the reminder, I had forgotten that was on
18. I hope you haven't missed the Andy McCluskey station, that's the one nearest my house!
19. From memory I think when I used one I found it seriously under powered but, I can't remember exactly what the wattage rating was now so it could have been a low powered one? I wasn't inspired by it
20.
I usually just tune them all a semitone sharp when they first go on, then put them back to concert pitch after an hour or two. Usually does the trick for bass strings -
+1, never broken a string and have no tuning problems, I do try and ensure I fit new strings a good few days before a gig so they can sit at concert pitch for a few days after the initial semitone higher tuning
21. That really is a random picture to put up with the ad!
22.
It seems the majority would take the lesser fee and a busy night then? As most of us are probably semi pro that would make sense. I liked the comment about how having one or 2 nights of live bands, even if its a loss maker, still brings in a few regulars through the rest of the week, gives me a bit of faith about the longevity of the business model! I suppose the other elephant in the room is the material we play. As an old farts rock band, the punters are all pretty much getting older. If I was in a more contemparary setup playing chart sh*te its possible we might get to play in pubs for a younger crowd although I don't know if such places exist that want live music (or old men playing chart stuff!) I think I have to accept its a "dying" demographic, evoloution and all that..
I am not sure it actually is a dying demographic, we played in Leicester again last night, not many people as ever but 4 acts, 3 were younger artists and ourselves who are definitely not younger artists! All three brought a few people with them so, in what was quite a small room, it made for a decent crowd, interestingly the songs that got the largely younger crowd up and dancing were covers of Jam songs, a Green Day number and a cracking cover of Erasure's Blue Savannah song. So even with a largely younger audience they will still get up and dance to the old songs which, in some ways, is encouraging
23. I gigged my USA Sub for the first time last night through the Mark Bass LM3 and 102 Traveller cab, due to stage size restrictions I ended up with my amp one side of the stage whilst I stood the other side of the stage with the amp angled across stage, it sounded fantastic, probably the best on stage sound I have had. I certainly didn't notice any weakness in the G string sound
24. I would probably have avoided any mention of Rolfe in the advert!
