1. I got a comment after soundcheck for a recent gig from one of the other bands members "that was amazing you are more like a lead guitarist than a bass player" I am not sure how much of a compliment that was but I turned my amp up until everything else was drowned out an widdled away throughout the gaps between songs before stomping off in a huff when I failed to pull after the gig!
2. Ok, a couple of years back I had a hankering for a Gibson 335, I brought one brand new for £1700.00, everytime I played it I hated the sticky feeling from the Nitrocellulose neck, I never felt at home with it, after 3 months I traded it for a brand new Strat which was £995.00 at the time....so I make that £234.00 a month depreciation costs for it! I also brought a really really nice 79 Precision a few years back for £1500.00 with the market as it is I doubt it would see £800.00 at present but I have no intention of selling it so I guess that does count as a loss at this point, call it a banked loss if you will. I do tend to find that if I own it, it is currently only worth 50% of what I paid for it
3. hijacking the thread slightly but I checked through our set list the other year to see what basses the bass player was using and whether they played finger style or pick live, I was quite surprised at how many players used a Precision played with a pick live whereas on the original record it was another type of bass played finger style My most surprising example was Golden Touch by Razorlight, the live video I found was from Glastonbury where the bassist was rocking out with a Black on Black Precision played with a pick, the other end of the scale was a classic Buzzcocks track played finger style on a Jazz bass!
4. Back to the top for this one I am afraid, I brought a 1/4 box spanner which would fit the nut but it is too long to go in the channel, if I cut it down I would have to cut 90% of the socket area away meaning it wouldn't even reach the nut! I can get a 1/4 socket on the nut but can't get anything on the back of it to make an adjustment, I have my doubts a ring spanner will get in there, so it seems to be a case on elongating the channel which seems a little extreme....unless anyone has anything else that might do the trick? Rog
5. I enjoyed New Order, I thought the white Precision sounded pretty mighty, I know Bernard's voice isn't the strongest but I thought they delivered, The Foals on Friday sounded good but I have not seen much else that would make me want to go.....Thinking about it, I am 50 this year and have never been, short of a live set from the original Ramones I doubt there is a single thing on the planet that would persuade me to spend 3 days getting there, 3 days wallowing in mud, and 3 weeks recovering from the experience! Old and grumpy but not covered in mud
6. Aswad, New Chapter Clint Eastwood and General Saint, Two Bad DJ Yellowman, Yellowman Rides again Eek A Mouse, Wa-Do-Dem Or if you fancy something truly off the wall and if you can find it: Dr Pablo and the Dub Syndicate, South of the River Thames, sort of Jean Michelle Jarre meets heavy dub if you will
7. I am not sure about the neck, my 79 Precision definitely has more of a shine to the headstock, this one looks like it is almost a satin finish, could be down to crap images but the neck with the question over the burst finish as well would make me want to have a lot closer look before I would consider bidding for it
8. I wonder if the promoter was testing you out, our first gigs in and around Leicester were similar situations, small PA's with no monitors, a seeming total lack of organisation with the promoter only turning up ten minutes from the end of the night, I have to say my first thoughts were "what a waste of time" and "this promoter is just small fry" A couple of weeks later we start getting offered decent supports with known acts at Leicester's "proper" music venues. Promoters like to see that bands turn up on time, with reliable kit, play with an air of professionalism and stay until the end of the night to support the other acts. As a 4th gig I would have stayed and played but would still have been a little peed off with the apparent lack of organsiation
9. I play guitar and keys and do a bit of vocals but I tend to write around a bassline more than anything else
10. My only real criteria for not playing a song was if the band didn't do it justice, we came close to a song I really hated when the band said they wanted to play "Moves Like Jagger" unsurpringly for a guitar band of 40+ year olds we couldn't do it "justice" we rehearsed it about 4 or 5 times and threw it out without ever inflicting it on our audience.
11. The Voldermort of guitar improvements, a true legend
12. That's the way, think about it, talk yourself out of it, logical approach, you don't need it, you can't justify it, it will be gone before long and you won't have to worry about it.......I should stop now shouldn't I?
13. Sorry, a little confused, a 66 bass with 1967 dated pickups? Am I missing something?
14. I hate to inflate your gas but.....that's a beauty, when are you going to see another one come up for sale? sorry
15. Go to one of their gigs, suss out if they are bigger than you and could beat you in a fist fight, if you would win, beat them up, if they would win.....change you bands name!...........I must add this is meant in jest, I won't condone mindless violence unless you capture it on video and post it on YouTube as a warning to anyone else trying to steal your name! On a serious note, I don't know what you should do other than be annoyed about it, have you checked out the type of music they are playing, if it is the same genre then I guess it's more of an issue
16. I tried listening to both but ended up punching myself in the face to relieve the audio assault! Whiny male vocal with acoustic guitar...how different can it get in the bed wetter genre (as it was described on radio 5 today)
17. Is there a specific tool for these? All my other basses are allen key adjusters or screw driver on a couple of Fenders
18. I love gigging with cheap basses, once set up and maintained properly they are perfectly up to the job...... if you stick a dodgy decal on the end of the neck you can fool everyone, including yourself into believing it's a more expensive bass
19. Hi guys and gals, I have recently picked up an old CMI bass, it needs a tweak of the truss rod to take out some of the forward bow however behind the truss rod cover I found this, what tool do I need to adjust the rod? Thanks in advance Rog
20.
I find boredom is a big factor. At the moment I REALLY want a red Precision with a maple neck. It won't do anything my existing instruments can't but it looks nice. When I take a break from all my instruments I come back to them and I swear they sound better than when I last played them.
One possible fix is to learn to paint bodies yourself, that way you can get a new bass everytime you want one, I have a couple that change colour on a regular basis
21. Only five is too difficult Bruce Foxton (for playable great basslines) Pino Paladino (for awesome fretless work) Stuart Morrow (because no one else mentions him) Bernard Edwards (for a groove, style and feeling I will probably never get) Norman Watt Roy (as above) Nathan Watts, James Jamerson, Steve Harris, John Taylor, Mick Karn, Scott Morris (The Bluetones) JJ Bunell amongst many others
22. http://www.ebay.co.u...ykAAOSwzJ5XU2FR I need to raise money for a holiday in the Maldives, I have a plectrum from a Kaiser Chiefs gig...yours for a bargain £800.....Just think it will match the bargain this bass is....not!
23. Mrs2611 and I watched it this morning, we agreed that the best two bands went through, it's great to see the huge depth of talent we have gigging around this septic isle.....I hope they all get paid for every gig, woe betide any of them that play for free I wonder if the bands that appear on the show are getting paid for their time!
24.
Don't! You know what happened last time ...
Shush, if we don't highlight the fitting of an illicit decal it can continue to be viewed as a fantastic build job and the world won't come to an end I do wonder that if the builder was subsequently employed by Fender Custom Shop off the strength of this build video, would the bass then become a genuine Fender custom shop bass?
