I am sorry but for £1500 you can get a decent car or some shoes or possibly Jesus or Hitler, Rick's are awful, you must not buy one under any circustances or you heads will all fall off...don't say recent threads haven't warned you. I really like the current red ones, they give me major GAS

Recycling strings? Or giving them away for free
Roger2611 replied to project_c's topic in General Discussion
Anyone know if this is still going on? http://basschat.co.u...trings-charity/
I think they ended up inundated with strings and stopped taking them, I had a bunch ready to send when they stopped taking them, it may have changed again but I haven't heard anything in a while -
I would say the fact that I cannot buy or sell a Rick on BC is probably the main reason I don't currently own one, finding a sensibly priced 2nd hand one that I can try first is well nigh impossible, I guess that is the downside of Ebay for you, unlike the old days of the classified adds the Ebay ethos doesn't seem to accomodate the try before you buy idea.....I guess if I have learnt anything from the threads on here it is with a Rick, try before you buy. At some point I will come across one locally and sensibly priced, at that point I can make the decision as to whether I want to own one or not

We have used Parlour Studios in Kettering for the last couple of weeks, first day, there was not lead to the left speaker and the right speaker had a blown driver, so pretty useless, we had to borrow gear from an empty room just to be able to rehearse. 2nd day they had replaced the speakers and got the PA working properly but the mic leads were both playing up, fortunately we had brought our own mic's and leads which was usefull as one of the mic's was trashed as well. We are in again tomorrow, so we will see what we gat then, I haven't bothered trying any of the bass cabs provided as I assume they will have blown speakers! We pay a lot of money to use these places, I know gear gets damaged but I think they should make more effort to ensure equipment works when bands arrive to rehearse

I have owned and disposed of a few copies over the years, much as the original OP suggests, I could never really get a sound out of the copies that I liked. I had the pleasure of trying a brand new Rick last year and thought it was a wonderful bass to play, however, again the sound didn't grab me, but it certainly wasn't bad. Rick's are what they are, marmite basses some people love them some people hate them, I think the OP is wrong to suggest that for £1500 you can get 3 far better basses, the truth is for £100 you can get a far better bass if you don't like a Rickenbacker in the first place, same goes for Warwick, Status and probably Wal and any other bass on the market. I might buy a Rick one day just for the fun of it

Stuart Morrow the original New Model Army bassist, just an amazing lead bassist, sadly no longer even playing according to a magazine article I read on the band recently, my recommended tracks would be Vengence or Betcha, really anything off their first album

I really cannot think of a reason that someone would have gone...."I know, it needs a large boil on the back...that's bound to solve my problem"

Should every bass player play at least a little bit of guitar
Roger2611 replied to CHW's topic in General Discussion
I started off playing both, then concentrated on the bass, I think it definitely helps me be a better bassist -
What's the general standard of player who reads Basschat?
Roger2611 replied to lou24d53's topic in General Discussion
I look up to him and I look down on him...I know my place in the world! I guess I am not bad, I can usually work out the bassline to anything I want to play, I have long since decided that Pino Paladino is a better player than me and trying to play exactly like him just ain't going to happen. -

We have had the same recently with sways of 20 or 30 likes in a day, then suddenly half of the disappear again a couple of days later, our guitarist looks after the page so can see the trends, we had a couple of days of getting 30 or 40 likes a day from Mexico, then is stops and the following day we stated getting loads of likes in India, then London....strangely we haven't played in any of these places (although the first tour is looking interesting) We have no idea how or why we are getting these likes...all very strange if you ask me

Band leadership - Democracy or dictatorship?
Roger2611 replied to Bradwell's topic in General Discussion
I have both, the covers band is a democracy of sorts, no one has final say, we all choose songs on a rota basis, I hate half the songs other band members choose and no doubt they hate my choices, the band has been together over six years now, we are still friends, we still enjoy playing together. The original band is definitely a dictatorship, our guitarist / singer writes all the songs, he tells us what he wants, we play what we want, he suggests trying it different ways before finally deciding that what we played in the first place was right for the song! He directs everything the band does....sounds horrendous doesn't it? Tell you what I far prefer the dictatorship method, we get to take the mickey out of him half the time, he totally recognises what we all bring to the table, I really enjoy the writing sessions as they are organised and end up being very productive, gigs are well thought out and targeted....above all else he is a cracking songwriter which I think gives him the right to run his vision his way -
I read the original add and had to check if I had been drinking all afternoon!
Looks like a refin at least. Not sure, but it looks like the neck plate sits in a black gasket, like some copies. Did Fender ever do this in the '70s?
The black gasket has been present on all of the late 70's Fender basses I have owned, I am not sure they have ever commanded / demanded a £2k price tag unless they come attached to a second bass....even then postage would be prohibative due to the excess weight of two 1970's Fender's!

Much as he can be a bit of a cock I do like the current single from The High Flying Birds " The Ballard of the Mighty I" I think it's the best song he's written and the video suggests he has a bit of humility

I have a pitch black, it's ok, the rack ears are plastic and feel rather flimsy, not sure how it would stand up to the rigours of gigging, it looks smart and seems to tune ok

Has the 5 string altered the way you play with your left hand, you may find you are bending your wrist differently which can be a cause of numbness and tingling, you may find your right hand is becoming clumbsy because you are distracted by the discomfort and concern about your left hand?

Recording discipline - your top tips for a young band
Roger2611 replied to The Admiral's topic in General Discussion
Go in planning to do three tracks, don't be disappointed if you come away with two finished tracks and one rushed one, start with your best song, it's amazing how time flies by whilst the band argue about a song they all know off by heart...trouble is every band member hears it differently! The mixing ends up rushed and the third song becomes a struggle....above all enjoy the experience and listen and learn -
I would keep any bass you love, I sold my Bass Collection 602 and 801 and an old US Precision, I miss all of them especially the Bass Collection's as I have never seen another 801 and my 602 had been converted to an ebony fret board, I recorded two albums with those basses I would love to still own them for the history we had together

I struggled the same when I first aquired a 5 string, over time muscle memory has changed and both 4 and 5 strings are easily manageable, not sure I would want to switch between a 4 and a 5 mid gig though so currently I don't gig the 5 string

I have the LM3 a traveller 2x10 and 1x15 cabs and a 4x10 cab, I cannot fault any of them, I use the head as a back up to my Ampeg Pro 7 SVT at the moment as I just like the Ampeg sound but it has all been 100% reliable, it sounds great and is light weight (with the exception of the 4x10 which is still flipping heavy!)

Peavey - is there something wrong with the company?
Roger2611 replied to Jenny_Innie's topic in General Discussion
Unfortunately there is no support from Peavey for products sold in the UK anymore, shame really as the PA heads and powered mixers are still bang for buck the best on the market, sadly I was never impressed with their bass amps -
Using an all valve guitar head for bass?
Roger2611 replied to Jenny_Innie's topic in General Discussion
I tried it recently with a High Watt hi-gain 100w head, I was dissapointed with the outcome, the set up lacked bass (using a Markbass 1x15 and 4x10 set up) the band never liked the sound, as soon as I switched back to the Markbass head the band all said they much preferred that sound, one High Watt head sold
