1. Hi Mark, I think it is most likely to be a SB310, I don't remember the 301's being available in that finish, cracking bass anyway GLWTS
2. Err I just ended up designing the basses I already own....doh
3. You could try Monks Park WMC not sure about The King Billy unless you are an out and out rock band they don't want to know, Wig and Pen is virtually impossible to get into the same with Molly's on Wellingborough Road, The back room of the Racehorse is good especially if you do it as a charity night but you would need to book the room in advance. I don't think The Old House At Home or The Thomas O'Becket have bands on anymore I would try the Charles Bradlaugh (pain in the ass to get any response from but if you badger them enough they have a great stage upstairs) The Romany is also a good venue that could accommodate you on a week day evening especially if you were bringing a crowd. Can't think of any others off hand but let me know if you get anywhere and I will try to come along Rog
4. I have my stage favourites which amongst them I go through cycles of which is my current favourite, I have a few others that desperately need to be sold if I ever get round to it
5.
You might be doing this anyway, but do you thread your lead 'over the top'? Assuming you play right-handed, take the jack plug in your right hand, thread it behind the bass, in the space between you, the bass and your strap. Pull it over the top across the front of he bass and place the plug into the output socket of your bass. The cable's own weight shouldn't be pulling it out now, and your strap should stop it falling sideways.
Even if your were not concerned about the jack coming out too easily this is good practice
6. There is an interesting add in the current Guitar and Bass magazine......Wanted Brown Haired bass player in to heavy rock....must have long hair and be over 22 years old........I assume talent, experience, number of limbs etc are all of less importance then I don't for a second imagine the guy placing the add would be some kind of control freak
7. His talents could probably be better served as a speech writer for UKIP
8.
Yes, finally found it with the VT Bass.
Totally agree, I am happy with my sound and have been for a good while but when I kick the VT bass pedal in people come up and comment on how good my sound was......£80.00 pedal is all you need
9. By the lord Harry......some people should be kept in straitjackets to prevent harm to innocent instruments
10. A Precision Bass Lyte might solve your problems, they won't break the bank, sound great and I have to tie mine down to stop it floating away when it is on the stand
11. If I remember correctly, it's not a problem for an amp to clip briefly irrespective of how often it does so, problems may arise if the amp spends prolonged periods clipping....I think that's right but no doubt someone with more technical knowledge will be along shortly to correct me if I am wrong
12. http://www.ebay.co.u...=item3a8c972b16 Tough to put a price on that one
13. With top notch gear it's more what you don't hear than what you do, I A/B 'd my top end Denon amp alongside a British built Exposure amp, the Exposure just sounded so much cleaner and gave so much more room than the Denon.....I no longer own the Denon.....I imagine a £350.000 set up would sound pretty special even A/B 'd against a thunder storm which has got to be the ultimate bass sound
14. I rotate most of my basses, I have a few that are out of favour or don't suit the current bands I am playing in (the Jazz and Status spring to mind) but sometimes it is just nice to pick up a different bass and gig it.....I certainly think it teaches you that the guitar is just a tool and it is you as the player that makes it happen
15. I am in 3 bands at the moment, gigs wise it is a first come first served basis but the main covers band is limited to 2 gigs a month leaving a few spare dates for the other bands, it seems to work ok. Rehearsal wise I ask the set list for the next gig is sent through well in advance so I can rehearse only those songs and we also rotate songs in and out of the set on a regular basis so nothing ends up being stale. Between the 3 bands I have a set list of 64 songs (40 for the main covers band an additional 10 different ones in the second covers band and 14 originals in the final band) practice wise that breaks down to 2 a day or 6 minutes a day over a month....manageable.
16. You are allowed to look up from the fretboard during the gig.....after all you have practiced long and hard enough to know what you are doing Good luck and enjoy it......recording it can be fun as well, we recorded our first gig...came off stage and talked about how great we were, listened to the recoding the following day and realised we could only get better!
17. unique voice and general sound, I love the single Country Club
18.
You turn up until the guitarist complains, then pretend to turn it down.
I turn up until I can't even hear the guitarist complain
19. Nice! are they definitely P90's? Mine had P100's in, which I swapped for P90's
20. I have a lovely 50's classic Precision which is perfect other than the bloody awful reverse wind tuners, the bass was one of the very first lot built and I have had it from new, the tuners were always really stiff but I thought they would free up over time....now five years down the line they are still as stiff and unfriendly as ever.....I have tried loosening the screw on the back, no difference, I have tried greasing the cog and winder....no difference....I have come to the conclusion they are just crap! Can anyone suggest anything else I could try to make them smoother and easier? If not can anyone recommend a replacement set? The base plate on these reverse wind set are a bit larger than any normal base plates so I am going to end up drilling new holes but the American vintage tuners holes are too close to the current ones that I would have to fill the existing holes to drill new ones...which I don't want to do. I see a set of Schaller M4SL tuners are for sale on here somewhere, they look nice but would they be an easy fit?..They don't seem to have any screw mounts on the back so I assume they are held in some way by the bush at the front? Any advice gladly received Rog
21.
A lot of Oly white Fenders turned creamy over the years, like mine did. It's degradation of the poly coat.
Mine is exactly the same, it's weird I always wanted an Olympic White Precision with black pick guard and a maple neck, so I wind up with what is now a banana yellow bass....still love it though
22. Passive, I totally agree with the above post regarding power cables and weight on speaker poles, I am also not overly convinced with the sound and quality of active speakers, I see loads of faulty ones for sale on Evilbay and I have yet to hear active speakers that have impressed me. My brother uses an active Opera speaker set up with his band, it was the best part of £1200 and the sound really doesn't impress
23.
Agreed, just not for £1500
I don't know, I guess I would expect to pay at least £1500 for any new real pro quality bass and even then you wouldn't guarantee it would be a really good player
24. Far Heath in Guilsborough Northants, Angus runs it, Bauhaus recoded some stuff there years back, we recorded our first album there, it is set in the countryside overlooking a reservoir (hopefully not actually in it at the moment!) really relaxed environment and nice results. The other one would be the Lodge Studio in Abington Square, Northampton, I think it is still owned by Robert John Godfrey (The Enid) it has really high quality vintage gear (Cadac desk and Studer recorder (at least it did last time I was there)) it is excellent for getting a really good vocal performance especially if Robert gets involved! We recorded some of our second album there with as good results as the rest of the album recorded at Whitfield Street (Sony's old studio) in London
