I find myself in exactly the same position with table tennis at the moment, I am hugely frustrated because I am fiercely competitive and am not as good as I think I should be....I want to give up but I don't want to admit defeat...so I guess it is small steps....I played last night and got beat heavily again but.....I know I played better than last week. I guess what I am trying to say is, give up if you really want to but if it is frustration because you are not as far along as you think you should be that is getting you down just keep playing, go back to what you can't do now in a couple of months and see if you have moved closer to it...it's looking for those little steps and they will come with practice

I think the Stageclix system is not far out of your budget, it's digital so no worry about licenses again as it's digital no loss of the lowest frequencies and they are supposed to be indestructible.....the only thing to be aware of is with active bases you may have to run a small link cable to move the transmitter away from the bass (I built a short lead myself which works perfectly)

I think your fret noise is being caused by your hand being in the wrong position, when you play with a pick the edge of the pick clips the string up and down, your fingers should be doing the same thing.....if your hand position is wrong you will tend to hit the string towards the fret causing the unpleasant noise. I was predominantly a pick player for exactly that reason but I seem to have refined my technique to eliminate the fret slap nowadays

I think it is a good relic.....I imagine this is exactly what my bass would look like if I suffered a sudden unexplained pants fire mid gig

You could try Monks Park WMC not sure about The King Billy unless you are an out and out rock band they don't want to know, Wig and Pen is virtually impossible to get into the same with Molly's on Wellingborough Road, The back room of the Racehorse is good especially if you do it as a charity night but you would need to book the room in advance. I don't think The Old House At Home or The Thomas O'Becket have bands on anymore I would try the Charles Bradlaugh (pain in the ass to get any response from but if you badger them enough they have a great stage upstairs) The Romany is also a good venue that could accommodate you on a week day evening especially if you were bringing a crowd. Can't think of any others off hand but let me know if you get anywhere and I will try to come along Rog

I have my stage favourites which amongst them I go through cycles of which is my current favourite, I have a few others that desperately need to be sold if I ever get round to it

There is an interesting add in the current Guitar and Bass magazine......Wanted Brown Haired bass player in to heavy rock....must have long hair and be over 22 years old........I assume talent, experience, number of limbs etc are all of less importance then I don't for a second imagine the guy placing the add would be some kind of control freak

His talents could probably be better served as a speech writer for UKIP

A Precision Bass Lyte might solve your problems, they won't break the bank, sound great and I have to tie mine down to stop it floating away when it is on the stand

If I remember correctly, it's not a problem for an amp to clip briefly irrespective of how often it does so, problems may arise if the amp spends prolonged periods clipping....I think that's right but no doubt someone with more technical knowledge will be along shortly to correct me if I am wrong

With top notch gear it's more what you don't hear than what you do, I A/B 'd my top end Denon amp alongside a British built Exposure amp, the Exposure just sounded so much cleaner and gave so much more room than the Denon.....I no longer own the Denon.....I imagine a £350.000 set up would sound pretty special even A/B 'd against a thunder storm which has got to be the ultimate bass sound

I rotate most of my basses, I have a few that are out of favour or don't suit the current bands I am playing in (the Jazz and Status spring to mind) but sometimes it is just nice to pick up a different bass and gig it.....I certainly think it teaches you that the guitar is just a tool and it is you as the player that makes it happen

I am in 3 bands at the moment, gigs wise it is a first come first served basis but the main covers band is limited to 2 gigs a month leaving a few spare dates for the other bands, it seems to work ok. Rehearsal wise I ask the set list for the next gig is sent through well in advance so I can rehearse only those songs and we also rotate songs in and out of the set on a regular basis so nothing ends up being stale. Between the 3 bands I have a set list of 64 songs (40 for the main covers band an additional 10 different ones in the second covers band and 14 originals in the final band) practice wise that breaks down to 2 a day or 6 minutes a day over a month....manageable.

You are allowed to look up from the fretboard during the gig.....after all you have practiced long and hard enough to know what you are doing Good luck and enjoy it......recording it can be fun as well, we recorded our first gig...came off stage and talked about how great we were, listened to the recoding the following day and realised we could only get better!

I have a lovely 50's classic Precision which is perfect other than the bloody awful reverse wind tuners, the bass was one of the very first lot built and I have had it from new, the tuners were always really stiff but I thought they would free up over time....now five years down the line they are still as stiff and unfriendly as ever.....I have tried loosening the screw on the back, no difference, I have tried greasing the cog and winder....no difference....I have come to the conclusion they are just crap! Can anyone suggest anything else I could try to make them smoother and easier? If not can anyone recommend a replacement set? The base plate on these reverse wind set are a bit larger than any normal base plates so I am going to end up drilling new holes but the American vintage tuners holes are too close to the current ones that I would have to fill the existing holes to drill new ones...which I don't want to do. I see a set of Schaller M4SL tuners are for sale on here somewhere, they look nice but would they be an easy fit?..They don't seem to have any screw mounts on the back so I assume they are held in some way by the bush at the front? Any advice gladly received Rog
