1. Bass direct (amongst many other I presume) offer the comfort strap....it's not expensive when compared to the bespoke leather ones out there and it is a godsend especially if your bass / guitar is on the heavy side
2. Is it me or does that strongly resemble a horribly deformed Westone Thunder 1?
3.
It looks nice in the photos, but I'd want to see what it looks like in real life.
I would agree
4.
There seem to be a load of people slagging him off for what he does, and I'd agree that some of his ideas and descriptions seem a bit odd, but has anyone here actually bought or tried one of his creations? Has MistyFingers tried one? So come on then- Someone own up: Who here has actually bought or tried a Mark D Phillips' guitar and can say thus categorically state that they play badly, or don't work? If not then how can we possibly comment on them??. It just seems to me that there is a mob mentality at work here, Someone slagged this person off so let's all jump on the band wagon and take the piss out him as well. After all he straightens necks, he polishes frets, he adjusts bridges and nuts, which are all things that a 'luthier' would do. How well he does these things cannot be judged by photo's on E-bay (well I can't tell from pictures anyway). OK, he then does things like leaving holes where he's reduced the number of strings or taken pots out, which are things that a luthier (or indeed most people) probably wouldn't do. I am not saying that he does a good job, or a bad job. I really don't know, but does anyone here actually know, from hands on experience? If so please speak up.
Having started this thread, I have absolutely nothing against the guy...I actually like him, we can all smile at his enthusiastic descriptions on the "improvements" he carries out....I don't think for one second he is cynical and trying to con people...and that's hopefully what makes people on here smile....he clearly believes he is improving these guitars and he believes he is providing a great service, I imagine if he ever lost an arm his first comment would be "now I don't need to buy gloves in pairs anymore" I like a positive outlook on life and I don't think anyone on here will argue Mark D Phillips has that in spades!
5. Mark will look after you, he is extremely passionate about bass playing and players in general, I found him a little scary at first but he is trying to work out exactly what you need rather than what you think you want....if you get my drift! I would definitely buy from him with confidence
6. I have been thinking for a while that we need a thread set up in homage to EBay's finest "luthier" Mark D Phillips but didn't really have something suitable to start it off with...anyway fate took its turn and due to a cock up at the paint factory I suffered a small disaster...as pictured below...so that is your starter for 10, the rules are simple and come direct from Mr Phillips....1) take a guitar...cock it up in some manner, 2) sell it as such a positive that we all want to buy it. So my description: I wasn't keen on the bleached maple effect that the neck originall offered so I thought I would gently tint it then I thought why gently tint it when I can go the whole hog and have a unique two tone effect that not only looks stunning but has vastly improved the sound of the bass and has made access to the nut even easier....Mr Phillips, being the master of such design work could probably take this a lot further than my creativity could go but as shown I am no master at this....anyway lets see what youv'e got to offer!
7. Being an aging old punk I probably shouldn't like them as much as I do, I was lucky enough to see them on the Dookie tour at Brixton Academy years back and they were fantastic but I can't help but feel it should be the likes of the Buzzcocks or Stiff Little Fingers playing to crowds that size
8.
I don't really like the idea of people buying stuff with the sole intention of selling it for a profit. Either here, or on eBay, or in life in general. Although it seems to me that most stuff in the for sale forums is over-valued these days anyway.
I can't go with that theory I am afraid. I recently picked up a Fender Squier Mike Dirnt Precision bass for £80 off EBay, the description wasn't brilliant but suggested the bass may have been beyond repair....anyway I went and collected it and as it stood I had probably paid £75 too much for it...I took it away repaired a damaged tuner, adjusted the truss rod, set up the bridge, put a decent but used set of strings on it and finally re-soldered the input....I gigged the bass on Friday night it was excellent should I now be expected to sell it for £80 when I have finished with it?
9. I gigged Friday night with an £80 EBay buy Mike Dirnt Squier Precision bass, it played brilliantly and the band commented on how good it sounded.
10. My year of birth in my favourite colour......well that's my GAS rehabilitation out the window then! Good luck with the sale and good luck with my lottery numbers tonight
11.
Otherwise it'll be because the electrons flow better when the lead is always used in the same direction. They wear a path through the copper. Or something. I could have made all that up though;)
Easy chap that was sounding like a Mark D Phillips type quote
12. My old Bass Collection SB801 doesn't actually seem to have existed other then the photo I have of mine. I also have a Godlyke 5 string bass which I think is very rare in this country
13. I miss my old sunburst Precision but probably won't buy another one, it looks good on a proper vintage P or J bass but I think it is the amount of white in the 3 ply tortie pick guards that make them look right
14. I love my fretless and have dreamt of the day when I can get it back out on stage and start using it again, I am a better fretless player than fretted....yet somehow that doesn't make sense does it?
15. Practice, practice and more practice....the more you play the better you will get, the odd lesson here and there will help you get the correct technique and hopefully keep you enthused
16. Old and heavy usually means decent quality and cheap prices (things like Peavey Hysis 4's and the likes, big old power amps from the likes of Crest Crown H+H Studiomaster etc Big old mixers like Allen +Heath System eights etc) Newer stuff like Allen + Heath Zed series mixers sending out to a pair of RCF speakers or the like, HK Audio systems etc are all far more portable but a lot more expensive As they say "you pays your money you takes you choice"
17. I have just used DPD via Interparcel to ship a bass to Greece, DPD were fortunately better at keeping track of my parcel than Interparcel were (first they said the tracking number they have given me didn't exist, which was worrying, and then the day after it had been delivered they contacted me to say they had found my parcel and it would be delivered in the next 3 working days!) Still it got there in the end
18.
, I only like the sound of them when others are playing them.
+1 to that
19. I guess I am better than I expected I would be when I started playing, but I am not as good as I think I should be considering how long I have been playing especially when some young whipper snapper barely out of nappies post a video on here that I wouldn't be able to repeat if there was 4 of me trying to play it! I look down on him but I look up to him....I know my place!
20. Ridiculously (being as I have just got rid of mine because I didn't like the sound) I liked the Stingray more times than any of the others, then the Bongo then the Precision wasn't taken with either the Jazz or the Fretless.
21.

That's excellent, I take it you created such a masterpiece whilst you should have been working but with quality like that you are excused!
22. I Brought a Peavey powered mixer from Si, his communication was excellent, the mixer was, as he described, in excellent condition and he even threw in some leads to sweeten the deal and the packaging would probably have survived a nuclear war......so an all round good guy to deal with, cheers Si Rog
23. I have noticed a real swing towards free postage in recent weeks, I wonder it that is in readiness of these new charges coming in or just because it looks more attractive than a purchase price plus additional postage costs, half of which are grossly over the top even given Royal Mail's extortionate rates nowadays
