We tend to favour the studio version then argue when our version doesn't sound the same!

I used to have one problem with the whole illegal download game, there was a time where a lot of excellent music was completely unavailable, the legal download sites didn't have decent playlists and the back catalogues were unavailable from the record companies so effectively you could not buy the bands music anymore. Kazaa was the file sharing site of choice at the time and I actually uploaded a small number of tracks from Prince Charles and the City Beat Band to the site which were promptly downloaded a good few times usually in America (I had made countless searches online and via the likes of HMV and this bands stuff was completely unavailable anywhere in the world at the time) so my question is, would the band rather no one could here their music or would they sooner it be available (allbeit as a recording from a lp record) so new listeners can hear the music and hopefully with enough enquiries it would be re-released again? I firmly believe in paying for the music I download (I actually felt guilty recently when OMD gave away the track Sister Mary Says I thought it was so good that I wanted to pay for it! so I am going to see them live instead) So to me the above was a big plus for the file sharing sites at the time, however nowdays that the legal download sites have a much more extensive catalogue I cannot condone illegally downloading music when it is there to be brought legally but I bet there are still bands out there that are not on the legal download sites so the illegal fileshare sites may still be the only way of getting their music

I have the Mexican 50's classic Precision, it's a really early one and it is a real beauty, it has a neck profile like no other and is my favourite Precision, IMO it is leagues better than my Classic Vibe Precision although in itself it is an excellent bass. I also own a completely stock Mexican Telecaster which again it an excellent guitar. I know the Squiers are cracking guitars but I have owned ones that just leave me cold and unmoved. I owned a silver series Jazz some years back and just found it excruciatingly heavy and uninspiring to play. I think there are good and not so good examples of both Squiers and Mexican Fenders, I have also played a few Japanese and USA Fenders that I am glad I don't own. If you pick up a guitar and 10 minutes later the salesman is trying to wrench it back out of your hands, it really doesn't matter what it says on the headstock it's probably a keeper

Has 24 Hour Drinking Affected the Live Music Scene?
Roger2611 replied to D.I. Joe's topic in General Discussion
I used to play in a band before the 24 hour drinking thing and the smoking ban, if you played the right venues the crowds would be there from the start, the wrong venues wouldn't have a crowd full stop, I still think it is much the same nowdays the only difference being that town centre venues know what time their clientelle will tend to arrive so get the bands to start a lot later than they used to! The smoking ban has had an impact but more so for the venues than the bands, smokers who are watching the band will try to stand in doorways so they can smoke and still see the band potentially causing the venue serious licensing issues. I hope the recent entertainment license changes may have a positive effect on the music scene with any sub 500 capacity venue able to put bands on without the need for a special license I would like to see some new venues step up to the mark and challenge some of the more established venues that think they can book bands off a reputation that disappeared long ago -
+1 on the Jam bass lines, Tube Station, Eton Rifles, Start or Funeral Pyre

A couple of times in the last year we have played alongside/ support to a certain local band, the bass player always tries to insist I use his rig because it's vintage and awsome he always seems a bit put out when I say no, thank you ever so much for the kind offer but I really want to use me own. He has seen us at a couple of our own gigs and always says how good my set up sounds

The current Bass Collection J's and P's seem to have consistant cracking reviews and it's a name with a quality reputation

Bass Collection SGC Nanyo Japan - 4 string - SOLD
Roger2611 replied to Stance's topic in Basses For Sale
I have checked my old Bass Collection brochures and unfortunately can't be 100% sure, I would agree the 320's in my brochure had gold hardware, the 465 etc had exotic wood finishes, the only one I can find with black hardware was the 310 but from what I can see it was never available with the translucent finish, it'll be a cracking bass anyway...good luck with the sale -
band names... the hardest mission ever
Roger2611 replied to RockfordStone's topic in General Discussion
My stage name is Chris P Trousers if thats any help and avoid Kipper Trench as a name for some reason! -
Our guitarist is married to our keyboard player, the marrige has survived 3 bands and 2 kids so far but when it all kicks off it's spectacular! the drummer and I insist that a pub is close to any rehearsal room or recording studio so we can escape the inpending carnage

I would advise against the Rock Bass $$ it's quite possibly the worst sounding bass I have ever owned, I tried everything to get a decent sound out of it even swapped the 250k pots for the correct 500k pots, it made a slight difference but not enough in my opinion to give even a reasonable sound I would expect from a budget bass and bearing in mind it was hardly a budget bass....I paid nearly £600 for it sold it a month later for £200 and I still think I got good money back for it. This was my first Warwick and after that bass most probably my last, I expected better for the money, after all the Ray34's and Mexican Fenders etc are largely excellent instruments, to me the Rock Bass did not make me yearn for the genuine item
-
How about taking a photo of said neck with serial number for future reference and then if you do wish to sell it I am sure most experienced buyers would be able to tell its a genuine item and you will have the photo to confirm how it started life?

I stuck my old bass rig on ebay, 2 1x15 Peavey Black widow cabs and a Peavey Firebass head all imaculate, I thought it would make somewhere around the £500 mark it sold for £220 I was gutted but I listed it with no reserve thats what it settled at the buyer was over the moon. I sold a month old Warwick $$ Rock Bass last year again with no reserve and again got only £205 back on it, again the buyer was thrilled to get a month old £600 bass for £200 (still think I got the better end of the deal on that bass!) I really can't understand why people list things with no reserve then try to squirm their way out of it if it doesn't make enough money....If you want a certain amount for it put a reserve on it otherwise you have to accept it's an auction baby!

I use the Stingray live, the Status for recording (although it's now in for repair as it started making a very high pitch squeal) the others get used as a back up and for practice

Having experienced a few of these late 70's Japanese P copies my feeling is that it is a Hohner bass purely down to the smaller than normal neck plate all of the others (Maya, Columbus and Kay) have all had a standard Fender sized neck plate. Hope this helps

Stupid, self inflicted, bass-limiting injuries
Roger2611 replied to mingsta's topic in General Discussion
The morning before heading off to headline a decent sized festival the band decided we had time to do some carpentry on our new transit van (building a bulkhead with a seat in front) anyway part way through the exercise I managed to land a direct hit on my thumb with the largest hammer I owned, cue lots of blood and howls of pain and anguish, I plunged it into ice cold water and kept doing it until we left for the gig fully expecting to be completely unable to play.....I still can't undertand to this day but I went on stage played without any pain through the whole set and other than a bit of blood loss no ill effects......about a week later the nail fell off. Managed to do very similar last year, 2 days before supporting Midge Ure I shut my right thumb in a car door but again managed to play the gig without any problems I must be well hard! -
I hear so much differing opinion regarding bass compression, I use a digital amp (as in the Mark Bass head) which, I am advised does not compress the output in the way either a transistor amp or valve amp does, I use a Stageclix wireless system (thanks to Basschat recommendations) so as avoiding the natural compression that I am told these systems normally bring, yet on the other hand I so often hear how much a compressor can improve the tightness of your bass sound.....if I put in a compressor now am I only going to introduce the compression that to date I have been buying out of my set up? I have owned a Tech 21 Bass Compactor which just sounded noisy to me so it was sold on. Any advice on bass compression would be greatfully received

I fully agree but it's nice being able to work during the day get paid and all the time being able to concentrate on what really matters, when I get home and actually pick up the bass I have had a full days mental rehearsal easing me into the physical side
-
It's a pleasing feeling, it feels like I have advanced again as a player, I like that it motivates me to play more
-
I join a band playing guitar, 4 years later I realise I hate playing the guitar and should still be playing the bass so fire current bass player and take on bass duties. I now realise I can play better than ever before and the circle of life continues

Having been playing bass for a good many years now I have noticed recently that I seem to have developed the ability to visulize a bassline, I don't actually need the song playing to visulize the bassline I can hear that in my head and just close my eyes and see my hand playing the bass. I learnt Going Underground last night, been listening to it since it came out but had never played it before, now today I can close my eyes and see note for note the bass part. Am I weird or should I consult a doctor?

My 78 Precision has been unplayed for a couple of years but as my stupid back has been pretty well behaved recently it's currently out of its case and reminding me of just why I brought it in the first place. If I applied common sense and sold it because it's too heavy I know I would regret it

What's In Your Hardcase.....Strap Attached?
Roger2611 replied to spongebob's topic in General Discussion
If I take the bass out to play it and forget to shut the case I tend to find a cat asleep in there (will post proof when my wife finds the picture)
