Thanks for taking the time to comment and for the links. My Stingray's neck has a lacquer finish - I can see why they moved to the oil and wax a few years after mine was made. I don't have any problems with my 70s fender which has a lacquer finish, just this bass. As mentioned it's definitely worsened over the years. If the Scotch Brite treatment doesn't work I'll probably look at having someone strip the lacquer on the rear of the neck right back, then go the oil/wax route

Update, for anybody stumbling upon this thread and has any interest in my attempts to remedy the stickiness on my Stingray's lacquered neck: I've given the Scotch Brite treatment a try. Initial impressions are it feels really nice, but proof in the pudding will be next time I play it at rehearsal for a few hours.

I've got a late 80s Stingray which I've had since the early 90s. I haven't played it outside of my bedroom for quite a few years, but it's always the bass that feels and sounds like 'home' to me. Last night I used it in band rehearsal and it sounded brilliant, reminding me of why I like it so much. What I'd forgotten though is how sticky the neck's lacquer finish becomes when you get warm hands. I'm not a heavy sweater (!) but it gets very tacky very quickly, to the point of discomfort. It never used to be this bad, it's worsened with age. I'm thinking I might try to Scotch Brite the rear only. Had anybody tried this, and what level of success? I'm loathe to strip it right back and oil as it's one of the lovely birdseye/flame maple necks and a lovely rich amber color these days. Having said that, I'll never sell it so need it to be playable! Thoughts, advice? Many thanks

Slightly off topic, but my first half decent bass amp was a Laney Linebacker 50. I was lucky enough to get hold of a Stingray when I was 16 (back in the 90s) due to a friend packing in playing. That amp always sounded great with that bass and I remember it fondly - still have the bass. One other factoid, albeit a second hand one, is a former work colleague of mine hailed from Tipton and had Mr Laney as one of his school teachers (I think science)! Yep, the same Mr Laney whose name appears on the amps. I think around that time he was already involved with doing work on amps for Tony Iommi as they were all local boys.

It's your money, and if these issues bother you then you might always struggle to see past them. I do think that it's a huge amount of bass for the price though. Either way, hope everything is resolved to your satisfaction.

I like they've actually put the humbucker in the mm sweet spot, great combo with the neck single coil imo. Amazed you don't find it more often.

I'm sure it's been said many times, but Mononeon is a genius bass player.

I'm not sure there's much can be done to protect a double cutaway electric guitar design these days? Maybe someone more enlightened than me could shed some light on this?!

Used to sell these years ago and seem to remember it didn't take much to push them into 'fart / clipping' territory, but the core tone was always decent enough. It's quite possible yours has been driven too hard and will benefit from the refresh though. Will be interesting to hear what you make of the new speaker and tweeter!

I suspect QC at this level may be little more than "are all the parts there?", "does it have strings". Anything much more likely isn't viable from a production volume/economic perspective?! Glad it's good otherwise, though, and will be interesting to hear whether you get a response. Squire QC seems way better now on average than they were 15 odd years back when I used to sell them, but even then they were often decent. I expect modern manufacturing methods has a lot to do with it, as is often proclaimed on the various forums.

So the max you could potentially profit by would be less than a grand? I genuinely don't know how it works, and I appreciate your idea was hypothetical, but it doesn't seem like it'd be worth the effort to me? Interesting point though 🤔

As per the title ! I seem to recall someone mentioning a repair person who was particularly good with these, but I'm darned if I can find the thread. My late 70s Jazz needs doing - any recommendations in the UK gratefully received. If in West Midlands area even better! Thanks in advance ☺

Yep, I was at Manchester - fantastic show and performance. Star of the show was Danny Carey for me, but they were all great.
