Was the 'Jim Deacon' brand ever known by other names?
Mokl replied to fretmeister's topic in Bass Guitars
We used to sell them at a music shop I worked in during the 00's. They were an 'own brand' bought in by a buying cooperative of independent music retailers, of which we were a part. They were good for the money, may have come from the same factory's "SX". -
Based on my chat with the owner ( yep I was one of those hoping for a bargain!) I suspect they probably didn't realise what these go for - and prompted by the mass response decided to take a closer look (although why you wouldn't do that first is a touch baffling). Either way, I don't blame them for selling at a price that's still pretty good given the current rate. I hope the new owner enjoys it. I would have gone over to get it on Wednesday morning if it'd been 3.5K!

Recently picked up an Alusonic Django Std 5, which was slightly unexpected but t actually ticks loads of boxes for me. I love the Sabre-ish vibe and the selector switch actually provides 5 useful and different tones. Eq boosted sounds more "hifi" but gets closer to traditional tones with treble backed off, for example. It plays really nicely and is very well put together. Sounds excellent in a band mix with keys.. As ever ymmv!

What bass do you regret selling? Was it love?
Mokl replied to vinorange's topic in General Discussion
So many regrets, but the main ones being a Zon Sonus 4 and Modulus Flea Bass in unusual green sparkle finish. I regret them more as time goes by as I know I'd get more out of them now, understanding why I struggled with eq etc. I really really regret letting an F Bass BN4 go, that was a 'sold it for the money' situation -
Who has a killer bass that they've neglected for one reason or another?
Mokl replied to jd56hawk's topic in Bass Guitars
Jeez, my bass with East pre does that too. I'd not put 2 and 2 togerher...Worth contacting John about it? I've not found him responsive in the past tbh. -
What year did he buy it? Can't imagine the value then would compare with contemporary pricing, although $70 is cheap by any measure.

How to adjust the intonation and action height on an acoustic bass.
Mokl replied to TheGreek's topic in Repairs and Technical
Probably stating the obvious here, but if you sand the underside of the saddle down make sure you leave it properly flat, otherwise you might find the piezo doesn't pick up properly. -
This sounds absolutely dire. I feel for you!

Aren't the MV basses plek'd? That makes an enormous difference in my (limited) experience of Plek'd basses. Not saying the 70s bass wasn't a bit of a duffer, but if still on original frets it's probably a few ropey fret dresses down the road by now. Just a thought.

Classic Vibe machine head- drop in replacement?
Mokl replied to Mokl's topic in Repairs and Technical
Thanks, yes I've done that many times in the past, was just hoping due to the popularity of these someone in the Basschat hive might have found a drop in! -
Has anybody swapped machineheads on a Clasdic Vibe Jazz? A friend has asked me to help with a replacement for a failed one oh his daughter's Jazz. I'm hoping to source one - or a set - that will drop straight in, if possible. Looking more at the budget end. I've found this Wilkinson one, but guessing the screw hole spacing will be different? https://northwest-guitars-9301.myshopify.com/products/1-x-wilkinson-wjbl200-jazz-bass-compatible-tuner-machine-head-right-handed?currency=GBP&variant=44714638115090&utm_medium=cpc&utm_source=google&utm_campaign=Google Shopping&gclid=CjwKCAjwge2iBhBBEiwAfXDBR5Ne6hDincjc0VXHS6gMVZxN9eKw7AD-tq0PBsLoLawQhtDl-2wzyxoC0yMQAvD_BwE Thanks in advance for any wisdom you can impart!

I had a bolt on 4 around 2003/4. I still miss the exceptional sound of that thing, but was never that comfy with it on a strap. Balance was fine, it was the way it felt like the headstock was so far away that I never fully got used to. I'd have another if I could justify it!

He must have really wanted that bass to go to such lengths!!

Ah cool, thanks, will check that out!

I'm not massively surprised by this based on my experience of selling US Fender over a 10 year period from mid noughties to mid 2010s. I must say I was under the impression that things had improved since then, and tbh I'm sure they have, but it put me off buying Fender for years. They always seemed well put together, it was the playability and ability to take a setup that was often an issue. I do think they make some great instruments, and I daresay there are lots of great examples out there. Ironically given the reputation from this period, I have a late 70s Jazz that plays fantastically with a great neck that rarely needs any attention🤷♂️

I've used them on and off for years, both the nickels and Pro steels. My take is they're mega-consistent quality and great value for money. On a slight tangent I really liked the balanced tension ones that were about a few years back, but can't seem to find them easily now, not sure if they're discontinued?

I have almost this exact same question if anybody can help!!

I wouldn't say my Bongo 6 sounded particularly polite either, might be worth checking batteries? Of course, it could just be that it is, relative to your other basses. Either way, enjoy. A Bongo 6 is a wondrous thing!

It's aesthetically horrific, IMHO.

I love this. Trying to work out how to justify and find the money for it lol !

Eugene Santini - Pointer Sisters - anybody know about him?

It's a seriously great tone -
Bartolini B-Axis might get you there.

The vocals are outstanding too, love this track. Yes, pretty certain it's picked and that's what lends it that greasy kinda swing! The first minute or so I can replicate the chords, but as it builds I think it may be overdubbed.
