Just found these basses over on Facebook and I have to say I'm damn interested! Been planning on getting a nice Limelight 62/66 P but these Peterbuilts are damn appealing! What is the standard spec of these basses? Anyone know what the tone is like?

Squier Affinity P-bass vs Fender custom shop Pino Palladino P-bass

Pino number 2? -
Finally got around to fitting the wiring kit I bought from John, and my word does it improve the tone of my P! It's now nearly exactly where I want my tone to be! The whole process of deciding what I wanted, to ordering and it being delivered was utterly seamless! John is very much a top guy! Always buy in confidence!

Just had a set put on my P by a Luthier friend and my word what a difference they make! I had D'Addario EXL170BTs on the bass before the TI's and while they are lovely strings and have a nice tone and feel, they were just too bright for me, having used them for a while, I also became so used to that wonderfully thick and strong E, so going to a lighter gauge made me a little apprehensive as I thought I might loose that strong E but I haven't! The whole bass sounds better now! Utterly fantastic!
I've just set up a band that I hope to take on cruise ships in the new year (have just applied to a host of agents), however, before we head off to the open seas, I'd love to get a few local gigs under our belt. Apart from the regular pub thing, where would you suggest? I'd love to get in with a few low key corporate gigs. We'd be looking more for background lounge kind of stuff, but unfortunately do not have our own PA. I just have no idea of where to start looking for gigs though. It'd kinda need to be paid too, unfortunately (£200+), For reference, here's our promo video: Any suggestions would be well received. Cheers!
The quality of your highlight reel, or the lack of it in terms of production is what stands out as soon as you press play to me. What did you use to record this and put it together? I'd be more likely to advocate a more polished studio mix that shows a lot of time and care has been put in to the package. Listening on, your sound is good, but it's missing something. I'd advocate a guitarist to join you guys, also you say the bound is lounge music? I'm not getting that vibe really, I wouldn't want to sit there of an evening with a whisky listening to a band who's vocalist belts it out big time, no matter how good she is, lounge needs to have a continuous undertone of class, and sophistication somewhat bossa edged to work and I just don't think you guys have that sound. As for getting gigs right now, as everyone has said, a PA is essential, having use of one allows you to charge a competitive fee, and be self reliant which is utterly key. Finding gigs and being booked again will need you to network and make the band stand out, again I'm gonna say better recordings and a better all round sound!

Venues, Let's Talk About Dying Music Pubs
JamesBass replied to Happy Jack's topic in General Discussion
While there are plenty of pubs that do jam nights and have live music, 9/10 times it's always the same! There will ALWAYS be a cover of Mustang Sally, Knocking on Heavens Door, and Superstition, which are all fairly decent songs, but when you go to a different pub and see a different band do yet another bad cover of them, they become songs that you absolutely hate! I know I do, and I have to play them in my band! In fact if I had complete control I'd change over 95% of our set list as there are too few songs that have groove, which is what people want, as its something they can dance to! Playing straight rock covers is great fun for the band but times have changed now and rock isn't something a mixed age and taste crowd can and will get in to! While there is a somewhat healthy music scene in South Hampshire, you do have to work and fight tooth and nail to get even a low paying gig as there are far too many average bands who get gigs purely because they've gigged there before! -
Venues, Let's Talk About Small Bars and Clubs
JamesBass replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
I think were on the same page. The young pretty folks don't want any contact with rock bands especially bands with 6O year old guys. It's a good thing our band leader and front person and lead guitarist is a 29 year old female. I think it's the only thing that saves us and keeps the band working. Blue
I don't think its necessarily the bands, many of them do modern chart covers, and it's not just rock stylings many bands round here do funk and soul. The venues are a huge issue for me, while they're doing fairly well among their dedicated regulars, who can afford more for a pint, they are gonna one day loose this loyal base, who come out regardless of which band are there that week. Venues here need to be more student friendly but their hands are tied as far as the brewery are concerned. -
Nice!, crowds that "get it". Any you guys that play in rock/blues band play these venues and all the young 20 somethings huddle as far away from the band as possible and act like you don't exist? Now I'm on a rant. I took my younger girl friend on 2 separate occasions to see some live female blues/rock acts. Samantha Fish and a few weeks later Anna Popovic at the same venue. She loved it but she asked the same question at both shows. "This is great, how come there are only old people here, young people would love this stuff." My response, "Really, then where are they?" Blue
I'm sure you're well aware of the cultural differences either side of the pond. Especially with regards to drinking and going out culture. Over this side of the pond you are free to drink from a younger age, and that has a social stigma attached to it. Though many of my friends are musicians and enjoy playing and seeing music live, they still have a hard time dealing with older people, especially people around our parents ages, and it is exactly those who frequent a pub and end up seeing the pub band play. Though I live in/near a city that is only 7/8 miles long and around 4-5 miles wide, there is a HUGE number of inhabitants, with a very large university and student population to boot, making it the most densely populated city outside of London, this in itself leads to people finding a local pub and becoming a face in the crowd as it were, so as a young 18 year old who is fresh out on the lash, it can be quite daunting going to a pub that has a reputation for being "A faces pub" where the regulars don't tolerate, loud groups of students. As well many pubs here don't serve the cocktail type drinks that excite the newly free 18 year old gets excited for, so though you sometimes visit a pub on a Friday or Saturday when a pub band is playing, you don't often stay as chances are you'll run in to a mates parents or feel like you are being closely watched as you're a young group of people in a predominantly middle aged crowd, when you could instead be going to the night clubs that play sh*te music but attract all the people your own age. On another note, I've been to jam nights in some of these locals pubs and have been given the cold shoulder because my playing made a more veteran player feel sh*te about himself because I play his childhood favourites better than he does, safe to say I'm no longer welcome at places where I've had this effect! -
Is there any good literature on this subject? Would be good to read more in depth about it all!

I've been in quite a few bands where the personel dynamic just hasn't worked and that includes being in a band with my best mate, he and I on a work level just don't work together, he just didn't work hard enough which is fine by me, he took and gave criticsm perfectly well, it never caused issues between us and never would. I've also been in bands where no one knew each other but we became friends, and hung out at least once a month away from the music but the relationship was still absolutely professional, the cristicsms, if deserved, were always spot on and taken extremely well! For what it's worth I'm 21.

Ultimate Bass - Custom o is there something close?
JamesBass replied to brensabre79's topic in Bass Guitars
Just how urgent is this bass? Is it a case of you've finally realised what it is you're after so now want it ASAP or will the bass be used for a significant period of time? If you can wait, then save up for it. Get it all planned out and then you can work from there. -
And another one to add to the fold. My '63P in Burgundy Mist heavy relic Met Mark in the services in Tiverton to pick up. Great bloke, very friendly and most importantly makes great Basses! As others have mentioned, this one feels instantly familiar. Very comfortable neck, low action and the main draw...very very resonant! Fantastic bell like E string. Can't wait to gig it. Cheers Mark. http://s1168.photobu...P?sort=3&page=1
Is Mark now offering up the covers? If so when I finally get my order in I'll be having some of those!!

Pushing and pulling has been something I've been working on as of late with the aim of getting myself really aware stylistically and rhythmically, but what would the people of bass chat deem to be essential listening to hear these techniques? I'll start with D'Angelo's Voodoo. Pino's playing on that album is all about pulling the beat, it's a truly masterful example of this technique!

So I'm looking to get myself an online presence and begin to make my tuition and session/dep work a lot more visible as I look to keep pushing to make music become my sole income. So basic advice, what hosts are affordable, I'm looking for something sub £75 PA if possible, to actually code/form the website I shall be using either the usually free templates or WordPress. I already have purchased a domain name so just need to transfer it to wherever I decide to use! Thanks!
Yes, KiOgon sensibly suggested that I try the replacement wiring and new strings before investing in pickups. I would like to get the bass sorted in one go but I could be wasting money if I don't take this advice. Not found many reports on the pure vintage 58s either. Darren
I know what you mean Darren, I wanna get mine all done at the same time but thinking now, that I'll just do what I have and see where that leaves me tonally!
Out of interest, what capacitor did you go with in the wiring kit? I went 0.1uF but not installed the kit yet. Still wondering whether to upgrade the pickups in my Japanese PB57-US at the same time. I've got the KiOgon vintage wiring kit and some labella 760FL strings sorted. Just need to make a decision on whether or not to replace the Japanese made "US vintage" pickups. Been looking at the Fender Pure Vintage 58 P-Bass pickup on Thomann. Darren
I'm in much the same process as you are! I've got John's 0.1uf cap, think it's the pacer cap? And I've got some TI flats now just need to decide if a pickup change is what I want as well or whether to try the strings and wiring with the stock MIM pickup or not! I know what pickup I'll be using if I do change it, I'm gonna go for an Aguilar AG4P60
Had a very good drummer in last night and his tendency was to push. Felt uncomfortable to me and I didn't like it in the first set. He loosened up in the second and we had more fun... For me, the best feel/groove drummers tend to be back.
I do prefer it more behind than in front, but sometimes you can really mess with the guitarists and singers by just pushing it!
Re previous - I have a p bass put together with different parts as mentioned , Maple body Rosewood neck cts pots seymour duncan spb2 Amp- Ashdown Syder 330 and David Eden 210 Re string with worn in DR Sunbeams which have improved the tone, previously had Rotosound 66 just couldnt get the tone! The Sound i want is the Tone on Crusaders -Streetlife, Forget me nots or say Alphonso Johnson in the 70s I feel neck is letting me down a bit it feels cheap, most responses i get is to not change the neck I have seen many you tube clips with musos nailing that tone, were am i going wrong guys!! I
This is not a dig at you, but whats your technique like? Majority of how you sound will come from how you play. It's the reason why Jamerson would always sound like Jamerson, why Pino sounds like Pino. Do you get my point? Also I'm gonna guess you're listening to studio versions of the songs in questions? If so, then you need to remember that the bass tones are mixed and processed and fiddled with to make them sound the way they do.

Been jamming with my drummer buddy today and we had some really tasty groove going, couple of bars of pushing it and then reigning it in and sitting just behind the beat nice and lazy, then finally bringing it home nice and straight! Was such a good jam! Beat manipulation is such a great tool we as bass players have! It doesn't get used enough!
I have Fender flats on my (cheap copy) P bass, and I love them. Considering trying some other flats, e.g. labella or status, to see if I can get something with even better fundamentals.
If you can afford the dollar then get some Thomastik Infelds, they're much lower in tension than other flats, but they just sound musical? That's the only way I can describe them! There's that thump and warmth but they can also sing!
Recently started gigging again, have been playing for 30years. I am using a GL tribute L2500 which has a good variation in tones. As a backup i recently went back to basics and purchased a frankenbass precision bass, not a Fender. I decided i wanted more of of the classic p bass tone.ie Forget me nots and possibly All night long by Lionel richie, you know the sound. I purchased some Seymour duncan Spb2 pickups and fitted them to the.which believe is a reliced maple body and rosewood neck. Plugging in i just cant seem to get that tone, the best i can achieve is that Clash-should i stay or go sound. Can anybody help should i be looking for a better quality neck,it lookes like a reliced cheap copy neck!!
What's under the scratch plate in terms of electronics? It might be that you could change out the pots and the capacitor, they have a rather large effect on the overall tone of your bass! I've recently decided I need one P that's set up for a smooth, jazz(genre), motown vibe, think Pino and Jamerson. I then have another that can do the harder hitting more modern kinda vibe, strings play a big part for me as well as the way I actually play the bass. One of the basses, has/will have a pickup provided by Limelight basses and the other has an Aguilar AG 4P60, if the Limelight pickup doesn't cut it for me with the flats on I'll certainly stick another Aguilar in, as they can go from a modern to vintage vibe with a flick of the tone pot. Personally I wouldn't worry about your neck unless it doesn't feel comfortable to play?
