1. Has anyone come across any of these basses?
  2.
I've had email correspondence with both Carol Kaye and Chuck Rainey - both lovely helpful people
Now those are two players I'd go through hell to meet and get time with! The one player I dream of meeting above all is Pino Palladino, he's the bassist I dream I can be! Now back on topic! I managed to get a free VIP evening at the Portsmouth Guildhall back in 2012 and it just so happened that it was the night of the Motorhead and Anthrax gig. Anyway, I turned up and went back stage having a quick tour of the place and I got introduced to the whole Motorhead crew and we got chatting and I said I was a bass player so they went off and got Lemmy for me to chat to as he likes a chin wag apparently! He was a real gent, quite shy and nervous at first but soon offered me some of his Jack, an offer you just can't refuse! When talking basses I mentioned I was about to buy a ric so he handed me his and said have a quick noodle! Was an awesome night!
  3. I'm gonna try the Aguilar AG 4P60, for me it nails that vintage tone!
  4.
Who are you
If you look behind his blue eyes, there's a label that tells you.
  5.
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir/Portsmouth,+UK/TN39+4BS,+United+Kingdom/@50.963134,-0.5889943,10z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m13!4m12!1m5!1m1!1s0x487442a41814f1e9:0x45b683ea03373b79!2m2!1d-1.083333!2d50.816667!1m5!1m1!1s0x47df11f774851713:0xec7d0e38951d9ddb!2m2!1d0.4637183!2d50.8563606
Ah, well I'm not due that East for a while, but I'll bare yourself in mind if I do need someone when I am that Far East! Expect an inbox in the coming minutes regarding the wiring loom!
  6.
Do you travel East young man?
I do, just how far east we talking?
  7.
Hey Grandad, What flats do you use? I'm a convert to flats - I have tried the Fender, La Bella, D'Addario Chromes and the Black Nylon wound flats. Which are your favouri tes?
I'm about to put some Thomastik Infeld JF344 on my P, I'll let you know what they are like, I've heard some awesome things about them so hoping they live up to my expectations!
  8. So I've just bought some new flat wounds and am going to be fitting some new pickups and wiring loom to my P Bass shortly, just wondering where the best place in Portsmouth is to get this all done? I probably could do it all myself but I'd rather have it done by someone more experienced as I need my bass to be in working order as quick as possible really. Cheers!
  9.
liking these, I play a '64 fender CS heavy relic, great bass, could do with a back up though, very heavy relived sonic blue, matching headstock, '64! Someone please PM me and tie me a ball park price for these Cheers Tony
£795 is the basic price, not sure what increases the price and by how much, your best bet is emailing Mark, which you can do direct from his website! He's usually very speedy at replies!
  10.
Here's mine in action at yesterday's dep gig with a proper rock band (which isn't normally my thing, but it was mint fun). That neck pickup is a doozy.
Well that sounds fantastic! Such a nice Jazz sound! Think if the P I plan on ordering is as amazing as I expect, then a Jazz will be joining it in the future!
  11. So I'm using this to create a chord chart/lead sheet, I'm trying to use some of the plugins, such as slash notation but the plugin isn't working on my mac?! Need to resolve the issue ASAP as I have an assignment deadline to meet on Wednesday! I'm using OSX Mavericks if that helps!
  12. There's lots of point to learning scales, it allows you to create runs and fills as everyone has already said, but in all honesty, in my opinion, chord tones are more relevant to a bass player, but to know your chord tones, you must know your chords, and that means knowing your scales and key signatures. While I agree most players can often find the right notes with time, there's nothing like getting in to a practice room with your band and having 2 or 3 chords strummed out and then going full improv and writing on those chords! Most often the most fun I have is when things are random and different! Some of you guys on here would want to crucify me as I rarely even play the same phrases during songs let along gig to gig! Obviously the real skill there is knowing when a variation works and when it doesn't, for instance I've been playing Livin' on a Prayer lately, very few variations fit in to that song cause of how iconic it is! Where as playing around with songs like Rich Girl by Hall and Oates or I Need A Dollar by Aloe Blacc, I find myself putting all sorts of new runs and fills in, so long as my drummer is tight that is! Also even at an advanced level, if you find yourself struggling with anything, going back and doing scales to your metronome can really improve you as a player and improve your confidence and feel!
  13. Geddy Lee?
  14.
Some photos of the Burgundy Mist Jazz! Bit rough, but it's the first chance I've had since I got it... It sounds and feels great! The only initial issue is that it's come with a higher action and quite a lot more relief than I'd usually like (about 0.8mm), so I need to get that neck off at some point and give the rod a tweak...Very happy with it though Mark's craftsmanship and attention to detail is astounding, i.e. slightly shrunken scratchplate, wear at the end of the neck and on pickups (as though the strings have actually been whacking and bouncing off them for 50 years!), and I have no idea how he's done such a convincing job of "yellowing" the scratchplate! ...
Well that is beautiful! Such a lovely colour! Also, first time I've seen one of his basses in a case, do they come with a case?
  15.
Just snagged a blonde piggy-back Bassman after much searching, so thought i'd get some of my stuff out for a pic, so we have 3 x bass and rigs to add to this porn thread; '52 Precision and '52 TV Bassman, '58 Precision and '59 Bassman, '61 Jazz and '63 Bassman
Seriously, how do you consistently pull off incredible finds like that?! Talk about envy haha, you're certainly a lucky man!
  16.
pretty much what everyone else has said its down to the drums to keep it driving. I dep for a jovi tribute band so know the song note for note feel free to give me a pm if you'd like some help with it chris
Cheers Chris, but after working on it for a long time yesterday I feel I've got it nailed as I'm able to play it with a click and the original track. I just hope the drummer does too!
  17.
As it 'appens, I've just had a quick listen to it today 'cos I'm playing it at a couple of deps I have coming up. As long as the drummer lays it down and keeps the tempo reigned in, I can't really hear anything difficult about it..? Which bits are you referring to?
Was mainly the verse/prechrous changes, I keep counting it as C for 1&2 then D &3&4& etc. the drummers fills so far have seemed sloppy, same as the guitarist changing late, as I count it that is!
  18. Has anyone else ever found this to be a very hard song to learn and play with other people? I've been learning it with a Uni band for a performance a week on wednesday, I've only been learning it since the Thursday just gone and have played it through with the band about 5 times, however each time the tempo changes markedly in my mind, and the riffs get harder and harder to play. I'm barely able to play it through on my own at home as it feels like there are some strange accents on the runs?
  19.
Bernard Edwards. ray4 into?. That's my stingray tone heaven.
As far as active basses go. THIS IS IT! Not only the best MM tone, but the best disco and active bass tone! Though, in a different look at this discussion, arguably the best fretless stingray tone is Pino's. I guess the OP has two votes from me!
  20.
Burgundy Mist 64 J Bass should be coming my way shortly...
Can't wait to see the pictures of this one! It's taunted me every time I visited his website!
  21. Good luck! Most importantly enjoy yourself! I personally enjoy depping as you get so many experiences, I've always made friends first with the drummer of any project I've been involved with as this makes life easier! Playing with a drummer that you're unfamiliar with can be daunting! I've depped for bands before where we've not had a rehearsal at all so I've practiced to a metronome and a backing track/the version they play and found the drummers to either be stupidly sped up or nowhere near tight enough, but there's nothing like reacting to a situation and making it all work! Seriously hope it goes well for you!
  22.
With regards the TI flats, be aware that these have VERY low tension (one of the lowest ) and this often puts people off them. It would be a shame to spend a lot of money, and only then realize that the low tension does not suit you.
I've seen they are low tension and I'm quite comfortable playing with a lower tension, the D'Addario rounds I use are low tension too
  23.
If you're doing much in the way of touring, I'd drop the company and email and ask about artist pricing. I became a Rotosound endorsee as a result of such an email.
Alright Steve, I've considered this a few times but I'm very stop start with things, in fact I've not even had a rehearsal with a band for about 6-7 weeks as I've done my knee in! Just getting up and about now, will drop you an email soon to arrange that meet up!
The way I interpret the thread is that the OP is looking for a site that is the cheapest for a given brand. If he was looking for the cheapEST flats, then he would not be interested in trying TI jazz flats (that's not to say the TI's are not worth the money. IMO they are..).
Exactly that, these are the brands I've ever the best about from friends and reviews etc. The fenders seem to have a love hate following! Plus I've had a few bad sets of fender rounds!
  24. I'm really determined to move on to flatwound strings finally after really getting fed up with the round wound sound, I'll still keep on bass set up with rounds, but I'm gonna put flats on all my P basses for now, so where can I find flats cheap? I'm looking at trying D'Addario Chromes, LaBellas and Thomastik Infeld Jazz Flats. Cheers!
  25. If I can, I will ALWAYS be on the drummers snare side. It's just where I'm comfortable and feel linked with the drummer. Like many others, a good last rehearsal often means a naf performance and vice versa.
