Does anyone else use a bridge cover but no pickup cover? I love the look and am about to order one for my sunburst Standard.
Pino Palladino does on his 3TSB P.

You cannot go wrong with a Precision bass. The pre 57 Tele style is a tad thinner sounding and more pronounced in the higher mids and treble frequencies. The 60s tone split coils are, in my opinion, more rounded with less high mids and more bass-low mids, it'll give a Jamerson tone when equipped with Flats and EQ'd as such. The new post 2012 American standards are fantastic, they have the custom shop pickups and are very similar to the 60s vibe, the Quality Control is also very good currently!

Fender Jazz and Fender Precision - Mexican or American?
JamesBass replied to riviera_kid's topic in Bass Guitars
Try as many as you can! If you budget won't quite stretch to a US made P, then find a nice well made Mex and mod it? It's what I'm doing to mine! -
Are yourself or your girlfriend a member of the Musician's Union? If not PM me your email address and I'll send over my teaching contract, which includes the MU template
Et voila!
Christ that's made my decision hard! I'd probably go for tort that was a bit brighter, perhaps I'll have have to save for two! Maybe Mark will do me a deal if I buy two?
-
So it's my 21st coming in just over a month and I've been told by my parents that I can have some money towards a new bass. Thinking I'll go for a limelight and it's going to certainly be a 62 era P Bass. Now the question is; Do I go for Shoreline Gold with a matching headstock and Tort guard? OR Do I go Lake Placid Blue with a natural headstock and Tort guard?
-
Pino. He and Jamerson are the ONLY players I've ever wanted to be. I want to play like many others but to have their careers is what I dream of! Pino is just about the most versatile bass player alive and his groove is incredible! Just look at his John Mayer trio work!
-
Yes, but what is it that you're buying?
62 P bass VERY light relicing
-
Beautiful! Mark never ceases to amaze me with the quality he produces! I'm fairly certain that come my 21st I'll be purchasing one of his P's! Thinking it's between Lake Placid Blue with Tort or Shoreline Gold with Tort?

Do You Really Know What Your Looking For In a Band? (Auditioning)
JamesBass replied to blue's topic in General Discussion
I'm going for the session player route and pick up and drop bands and projects really quickly, I'm after that perfect balance of all 3, aspects. Creation, Playing, and £'s. I have Blues trio which allows me my creation and playing with 2 exceptional musicians, the money is slow and small with that project currently but we are building everything up nice and slow, the other guys are all in other bands and projects as well, I've just applied to work with an originals band who have just about cut their first CD and have also applied to work with a singer-songwriter who is looking to begin touring and I'm looking to find my perfect function/covers band to guarantee the money. -
Ok I've not read through the whole thread yet but could I use this this kind of setup for JUST pedals? I'm looking to add a few pedals to my sound, maybe a chorus, decent distortion, and an ocataver but if I can avoid buying physical pedals for the price they cost and still able to run in to my valve rig I'll be happy! So am I able to run the set up as just pedals and no amp sim?

Looking for a bass tutor to help me brush up on some technical and theory stuff. Someone well versed in jazz theory is probably ideal. Thanks!
You are a weird lot , you're on stage, playing music that people like or you wouldn't be playing them, and yet you're moaning. I hate pretty much 99% of what I have to play at an average function gig, it bares little resemblance to what I listen to at home or on the train, but I get off on the fact that I'm doing something I love, and the audience are enjoying themselves.
For me it's just discussing a song I dislike playing, be that live or in rehearsals, I'll play it cause someone's paying me to and I enjoy playing live! There are MANY more songs we have in our set that I enjoy playing more than Play that Funky Music
-
For me personally it's play that funky music, I've had to play it for 5 years straight near enough week on week when I was at college and I now HATE IT!
-
It really is stunning! Very good looking bass indeed!
-
Shoreline gold is piquing my interest again! Maybe SLG with tort? Hmm...
Woo! Don't think I've ever seen a bass in Graffiti Yellow!
I know right! Some awesome colour's!
Here's mine with a BassDoc tort guard Not entirely sure it's Lake Placid though...I have always thought it looked a bit darker than LP. It's a 2000 American Standard. Great colour and guard combo though, I love it.
Fender colour chart for checking http://www.fender.com/en-GB/support/color-chart/
-
Think the tort needs to be subtle if the colour is subtle and slightly faded, but for a newer brighter finish the tort needs to "pop" I'd even say be more red/orange than brown
Nice. What level of relicing are you going for? Limelight would be a serious contender for me if they did 'new looking' ones but apparently they don't...
Gonna ask for as light as you can get! The lighter the better for me, I want it to seem warn, especially on the neck but I wanna wear it down myself, having a head start is always nice

and todays quiz is.........advice needed on amps
JamesBass replied to donslow's topic in Amps and Cabs
It is certainly an oddity, played guitar for 16+ years with a pick and can't use one on a bass for 16+ minutes Have tries many different types and brand of round wound string and for some reason unbeknownst to me, seem to play better and easier with flatwounds but maybe I should reconsider my choices Not too many shops within a reasonable distance of me are well stocked in bass gear unfortunately so there's little opportunity to try a lot of amps/cabs/ combos
Hi Donslow, I see you've had a LOT of helpful replies thus far, hopefully this might help. I'm also predominantly a blues/blues-rock player, my originals band, who also do some covers are very much influenced along the same line as you are. As a bass player my tone quest basically has me dreaming of building a time machine and just living in the 60s! Sadly I've not got a perpetually collapsing star, nor am I a time lord I have however, had the same issues you have with the tone quest, I'm about as close as I'll ever get with my current rig, just waiting to now add another P to the stable, as well as upgrading my current MIM P. Currently I'm using a HUGE Ashdown CTM300 head, which is all valve and is about as ballsy as you'll get! It's SUPERB! I usually run my settings along the line of; Mellow switch on, this scoops the mids and adds some bass and treble, I then further remove mids by moving the pot back to 11 o'clock, treble then stays at 12, while the bass gets boosted to between 1 and 2. This head is then going through a Laney Richter 410 of all things! I often switch between tweeter on or off depending on the room and that is all the correcting I do to my rig. My MIM P and Ric are both strung with D'Addario rounds currently, namely the EXL170BTs and the EXL170s respectively, both have the tone on about 1 or 2 for the most part and give me enough cut and punch while still being sufficiently thumpy without being wooly and messy, my P is also a maple board! Though it sometimes wears chrome flats and when it does the tone knob on the bass goes to half and then gets fiddled with to suit a room. Hope there's some good things in there for you to mull over and consider, feel free to drop me a PM at anytime and I'll try and answer any other questions you have! -
It's what I'm going to be going for on my Limelight P when I order it! Complete with a Rosewood neck!
Ahh sorry I don't mean to come off as too fussy. To be honest I won't notice the majority of QC issues as long as it all works I don't care about most of it. I've just heard a lot about the problems with MIM basses and assumed they were particularly bad with consistency. Also, I've heard the exact opposite from the other two, especially the Schechter. Odds are that I'd be perfectly happy with the first Standard Fender I picked up.
The truth is there aren't many issues, not from what I've encountered, of course the electronics and pickups COULD be better, hence the easy of upgrading a Fender bass, BUT there really aren't all that many issues with the series of basses, currently across all lines, Fender are arguably at their best consistency ever! What issues have you heard about out of curiosity?
