Passive vs Active EQ on amps - what the pros and cons?
EliasMooseblaster replied to Naetharu's topic in Amps and Cabs
Whilst I can't comment on James or Baxandall circuits, I did find this article extremely helpful in understanding Fender/Vox/Marshall-style passive tone stacks: http://pickroar.com/1003/the-tone-stack-explained-in-english-for-humans/ Both of my Ashdowns appear to have passive tone circuits in this family, and it's certainly true that they're not as intuitive as a nice, big, active, multi-band graphic EQ! They took some getting used to, especially as all the SS Laneys I'd used before had cut/boost controls, but I've come to rather like the simplicity they force upon you. There is a bit of an art to understanding them, but once you get past that you still, ultimately, have a three-band EQ with a lot of flexibility (even more so if the amp has deep/bright/mid-shift switches). On the other hand, if you're one of those players who's quite certain that "their sound" absolutely needs that specific boost at 800 Hz and a slight cut at 120 Hz then perhaps active will serve you better! -
BBC show looking for 'best part time band'
EliasMooseblaster replied to redbandit599's topic in General Discussion
Arse. "All Band Members must be residents of the United Kingdom" and "No Band Member may be a musician as his/her main profession" That rules us out, then. That, and only having the one bass player of course. -
Oddly enough I received one of those emails from eBay the other day with the subject line "Don't let it get away!" (Read: "you're not buying enough on here"), which turned out to be none other than the above monstrosity. They obviously assumed that I was interested from the fact I'd dropped back for a second chuckle at it. For a minute I almost thought some daft sod had bid on it...
cash converters near me has got a MIM fender P for £249, not sure if thats a good price, looks in pretty good nick
Oddly enough I used to live near one that had a MIM Jazz in the window for ages - can't remember the exact price now but a quick foray down Denmark St confirmed my suspicion that I could have got one brand new for about the same price!

Which means one could contend that for the last forty-six-odd years, Hawkwind has been fronted by one Dave Badger. -
We've been invited to play at this year's Stow Festival 2015, a four-day event bringing music to venues all over Walthamstow. Best of all, we're playing this Friday, at "the Stow"'s new local brewery, Wild Card, and it's free entry!
So is a tonerider a good thing? Didn't realise Squier were putting them in the CV basses! -
Gibson Grabber fretless.

Oh my...if I hadn't just bought a fretless Jazz... (And, you know, if I had £1500-odd knocking around...) -
TO GO: used Rotosound Swing Bass Nickels
EliasMooseblaster replied to EliasMooseblaster's topic in Recycling
Hi Matt, I presume that's for an SG-type bass? The strings I've got are all for long-scale basses (I've just remembered that the Gibson EB-3 is a shorty...and it's the long-scale Epiphone that I have), but I do still have that set if you'd like to give them a shot. -
Just to add an extra dimension to this one: how many of you who find it useful are playing original material, and how many are working in covers/function bands?

I just met Dan in a car park in Northwest London to buy a Blackstar guitar amp from him. Smashing feller, and a pleasure to do business with. (And the amp sounds absolutely wonderful - cheers, Dan!)

Do bassists want to hear bass solos?
EliasMooseblaster replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
At the risk of splitting hairs, do people object to hearing the bass in isolation at all, or just to dedicated passages where the bassist gets 16 bars to have a freestyle widdle? Only, I'd be very surprised if you all thought the bass/guitar call-and-response in the middle of My Generation added nothing to the song. On the other hand, I've heard some fairly underwhelming passages where the bassist was given free rein to do as he pleased - but nothing so bad that I'd have moved to outlaw them! -
So further to some of the earlier comments how are we defining "prog/progressive rock" here? Because if we're going by the original definition, I think both Hawkwind's eponymous début, and Quintessence's eponymous third album, are up there with the best of them. If we can consider Deep Purple, and indeed Blackmore's Rainbow to be "progressive" rather than "hard rock/heavy metal" then In Rock and Rising are close to my heart. But if I have to play it safe...well, any of Camel's first four albums, Music in a Doll's House by Family, Dancing Madly Backwards by Captain Beyond...I don't know, is the short answer. (Also: not necessarily a favourite, but would you consider Six by Mansun to be prog-rock? Found myself revisiting it quite frequently of late, and unlike their other releases, it's definitely more than "just another '90s indie album.")

Do bassists want to hear bass solos?
EliasMooseblaster replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
I think it depends on the band - usually with jazz gigs I like to hear a bass solo, especially if the bassist is on an upright. If it were a Level 42 gig - sorry, but I'd make a beeline for the bar. And then wonder why I was at a Level 42 gig in the first place... -
Bass VI owners, what have you done?
EliasMooseblaster replied to Jimryan's topic in General Discussion
At the risk of derailing the thread with a potentially stupid question: could one string these with lighter strings and turn it into one of these elusive baritone guitars one occasionally hears about? I.e., stringing it BEADF#B (or even ADGCEA, I guess), but with the longer scale length giving better tension that one might get by doing the same to a normal six-string guitar?
