P bass pickup advice: '95 Korean Squier v Classic Vibe '60s
EliasMooseblaster replied to lownote's topic in Bass Guitars
So is a tonerider a good thing?
I took a chance on one of their Jazz pickups for a Frankenbass project and I have to say I've been very pleased with it. Didn't realise Squier were putting them in the CV basses! -
Gibson Grabber fretless.
EliasMooseblaster replied to spectoremg's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
Oh my...if I hadn't just bought a fretless Jazz... (And, you know, if I had £1500-odd knocking around...) -
TO GO: used Rotosound Swing Bass Nickels
EliasMooseblaster replied to EliasMooseblaster's topic in Recycling
Hi Matt, I presume that's for an SG-type bass? The strings I've got are all for long-scale basses (I've just remembered that the Gibson EB-3 is a shorty...and it's the long-scale Epiphone that I have), but I do still have that set if you'd like to give them a shot. -
Just to add an extra dimension to this one: how many of you who find it useful are playing original material, and how many are working in covers/function bands?

I just met Dan in a car park in Northwest London to buy a Blackstar guitar amp from him. Smashing feller, and a pleasure to do business with. (And the amp sounds absolutely wonderful - cheers, Dan!)

Do bassists want to hear bass solos?
EliasMooseblaster replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
At the risk of splitting hairs, do people object to hearing the bass in isolation at all, or just to dedicated passages where the bassist gets 16 bars to have a freestyle widdle? Only, I'd be very surprised if you all thought the bass/guitar call-and-response in the middle of My Generation added nothing to the song. On the other hand, I've heard some fairly underwhelming passages where the bassist was given free rein to do as he pleased - but nothing so bad that I'd have moved to outlaw them! -
So further to some of the earlier comments how are we defining "prog/progressive rock" here? Because if we're going by the original definition, I think both Hawkwind's eponymous début, and Quintessence's eponymous third album, are up there with the best of them. If we can consider Deep Purple, and indeed Blackmore's Rainbow to be "progressive" rather than "hard rock/heavy metal" then In Rock and Rising are close to my heart. But if I have to play it safe...well, any of Camel's first four albums, Music in a Doll's House by Family, Dancing Madly Backwards by Captain Beyond...I don't know, is the short answer. (Also: not necessarily a favourite, but would you consider Six by Mansun to be prog-rock? Found myself revisiting it quite frequently of late, and unlike their other releases, it's definitely more than "just another '90s indie album.")

Do bassists want to hear bass solos?
EliasMooseblaster replied to MacDaddy's topic in General Discussion
I think it depends on the band - usually with jazz gigs I like to hear a bass solo, especially if the bassist is on an upright. If it were a Level 42 gig - sorry, but I'd make a beeline for the bar. And then wonder why I was at a Level 42 gig in the first place... -
Bass VI owners, what have you done?
EliasMooseblaster replied to Jimryan's topic in General Discussion
At the risk of derailing the thread with a potentially stupid question: could one string these with lighter strings and turn it into one of these elusive baritone guitars one occasionally hears about? I.e., stringing it BEADF#B (or even ADGCEA, I guess), but with the longer scale length giving better tension that one might get by doing the same to a normal six-string guitar? -
Update 13th Sept: this amp has now been sold. Update 17th Aug: now only £70! The time has come to part ways with this faithful little guitar combo. A bit of a rarity, I believe: whilst Vox still make Pathfinder amps, the 15R doesn't appear to be in production any more. - 15W solid state amp, 8" Vox speaker - separate Gain and Master Volume, with Gain Boost switch - bass and treble controls - built-in tremolo unit, with speed and depth control - built-in reverb - jack sockets for Line Out, Headphone, External Speaker and Footswitch As the photos show, there is a small amount of cosmetic damage to the amp: some scuffs in the Tolex, and the original owner somehow managed to get white emulsion on the flex. The amp is nevertheless in perfect working order. Hasn't been pushed too hard, either: I've owned it for about seven years, and it's been gigged about five or six times at most. Probably the loudest solid state combo I've ever encountered. Not sure whether it would keep up with a 15W valve equivalent, but it's certainly loud enough for small gigs, recording or rehearsal. A rich, warm tone which overdrives nicely with the gain wound up. The tremolo and reverb units provide additional 'cool' to what is already a good-looking and good-sounding amp. I'm selling it for two reasons: one is to fund another purchase, and the other is that, nice as the tone is, I'm looking for something a bit different. I live near Kingston upon Thames and work in London, so I'm happy to meet buyers anywhere on the TfL network. Otherwise I'm happy to post to other parts of the UK; I'll need to look into postage costs. TO GO: used Rotosound Swing Bass Nickels
EliasMooseblaster replied to EliasMooseblaster's topic in Recycling
Just a quick update: still a few sets of RS66s to go; I believe one will have been cut for a T-bird and the other for a P-bass, but I'll check. I've also got a set of Rotosound Purples - .012 -.052, cut for an SG-style guitar (i.e., 3+3 headstock). I'll throw in the unused spare top E with these. Probably going to have an additional set of RS66s cut for an Epi EB-3 (2+2 headstock) after Monday night if anyone fancies those. -
Off The Beaten Track Covers That Go Down Well
EliasMooseblaster replied to Mykesbass's topic in General Discussion
A big +1 to Up Around the Bend. Another suggestion which used to go down a storm with my old blues/rock trio: Time by Pink Floyd. If the lead guitarist is up to the job, every hero-in-their-own-bedroom guitarist will be queuing up to shake his hand after the set. -
I'm just filling in the online form to see if they'll book Cherry White for an evening in the near future, and I've been asked to name our price. Trouble is, "our price" depends very much on how much stuff we have to bring...does anybody know whether White Trash have their own amps and drumkit, or will we have to throw our own stuff in the back of a van?

After a bit of a hiatus (i.e., a few gigs that were cancelled on us), we played at The Islington last Friday, 17th July: -
