Favourite female bassists.... Go!
EliasMooseblaster replied to Pixiechick23's topic in General Discussion
But women are still under-represented in the world of Bass (although it seems not as rare as lead guitarists and drummers! :- ) , so it is lovely to see their achievements celebrated.
There does seem to be a growing army of ladies looking to rob Joe Bonamassa of his modern blues guitar crowd - personally I think Joanne Shaw Taylor and Samantha Fish are the current strongest contenders (links below), but Dani Wilde, Erja Lyytinen and Ana Popovic are not to be sniffed at either.
(I will also admit that the sight of an old gal with a bass does seem to have a dizzying effect on mature gentlemen. And sometimes younger gentlemen But then all musicians are sexy, right? )
Yes. This latter assertion is scientific fact, I'm sure of it!
Seeing as a Peavey 410 is over 100lbs, this seriously must weigh the same as The Moon. If he sells it it could cause an inbalance in The Earths gravity.
At the risk of verging close to politics (sorry!)...an attempt to achieve Scottish Independence by accelerated tectonic shift?

Rock crowd pleasers with more challenging basslines
EliasMooseblaster replied to flunkie's topic in General Discussion
If your guitarists are up for it then Iron Maiden baselines should keep you on your toes too, left AND right hand workout!
Ooh, good idea, sir - I defy someone to tell me that Run to the Hills and Running Free wouldn't be crowd pleasers! -
They do, hubby was eyeing up a resonator last time we were there.
Funny you should say that, the last thing I bought from there was my resonator!

The Worst Bass Lines to Play EVER!
EliasMooseblaster replied to Weststarx's topic in General Discussion
Sex on Fire. Not just because I find it dull; most guitarists do as well. If half the band finds it tedious to play (and I suspect the others did as well) then it's probably time to drop it from the set! But then, is the problem similar to Mustang Sally or Brown-Eyed Girl? I.e., it's not just because it's dull to play, it's also because there's demand for it at nearly every party or function. -
Love the black Precision with maple/blocks.
+1 - almost caved a couple of years ago on the '60s P except I didn't like the "fiesta red" ( = pink) finish. That black one with the block inlays...I probably shouldn't be allowed in the same shop as one of them!

I think it was Laurence I dealt with the last couple of times I've been in there myself - very helpful feller, and the other staff have always been good as well. I thought it was a nice touch that he vaguely remembered me from previous visits. Thinking back, I've only ended buying a couple of more esoteric basses from them - the 8-string and the fretless - though god knows I've nearly pulled the trigger on several other specimens they've had in there!

Left Handed Fenderbird Thing
EliasMooseblaster replied to waynepunkdude's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
If one were to reverse the strings on that little beauty a la Jimi Hendrix, would that make it a reverse-non-reverse 'bird? (Sorry, I'll get my coat. In the meantime, BA has indeed got one in the works - there's a thread on here which might elucidate http://basschat.co.uk/topic/222314-non-reverse-thunderbird-build/page__hl__thunderbird%20build) -
Amplifying a violin for practice/live
EliasMooseblaster replied to linear's topic in Other Instruments
The violinist in my old jazz band had a piezo fitted to the bridge of her violin. (May be worth getting this done professionally; I gather they're quite a bit easier to damage than the electric basses we chop and change so readily!) I will second what BotB has already said though: get him some kind of acoustic preamp or good DI box. Our violinist used to plug her piezo output into a nifty little Fishman EQ which clipped to her belt. Essential for keeping the scratchy higher frequencies out of the PA! -
Hooking your thumb over the top of the neck makes more sense if you're a guitarist and have an unusual chord to get your hand round. E.g., try to play Pinball Wizard using Pete Townshend's original chord shapes and you'll quickly resort to using your thumb! I'm sure there are occasions where I do the same on the bass (can't think when, just now) but it's not a technique I'd use regularly. Bear in mind it will limit your movement between different neck positions!

what was the first number you gigged on a bass ?
EliasMooseblaster replied to essexbasscat's topic in General Discussion
If various school functions count, then it could well have been The Kids Aren't Alright by The Offspring. (We decided we wouldn't get away with Longview by Green Day - I assure you I only championed it because it had a more interesting bassline!) If not, then it would have been the slightly-more-classic Alright Now by Free. I'm slightly ashamed to say I didn't get round to learning the bassline properly and just noodled my way through it. But I think I got away with it *wink-wink* -
Cheers fellers, as I say we are expecting a handful of free guest tickets (which we've never managed to use up previously) so watch this space; I might be able to save you a few quid on the entry!
Russell Crowe was/is in a band called Forty Odd Foot of Grunts.
Unfortunately, whenever someone puts Russell Crowe and music in the same sentence, all I can think of is: http://youtu.be/X-DblXaqQMk "Makin' movies, makin' music and fightin' 'round the world!"
Argh, it's a shame it's the 24th you're playing South Parks. I live just down the road from there but I'm away then!
That is unfortunate timing...oh well, if things do change unexpectedly, we usually get a few free guest tickets for the festival, so by all means give me a shout via PM!

Can any of you nice people in the Oxfordshire area give me a little advice? I need a venue or promoter that might be willing to take a shot on a London-based band and offer us a support slot on, say, a gig with a couple of local bands. Ideally a weekend, but I wouldn't rule out a weekday evening, probably some time in September or October. As it says in my sig, we're playing at a festival in Oxford South Parks towards the end of August, which would be a great chance for us to plug an upcoming gig...we just need to have an upcoming gig to plug! Breaking into Bristol...
EliasMooseblaster replied to EliasMooseblaster's topic in General Discussion
By George, I think we've done it! Thank you very much for all your input, folks - after a few lengthy email exchanges, it looks like I'll be taking Cherry White to Mother's Ruin on Saturday 30th August! I'll put up more details when I have them - I gather the rest of the lineup has yet to be confirmed. -

Arrrgghh... make it stop [warning: shoddy guitar content]
EliasMooseblaster replied to UglyDog's topic in General Discussion
Stand it ? I love it...it's an amazing guitar break. Inspired by John Coltrane's "India" apparently.
Yeah, I'm going to stick up for it too - it is rather Coltrane-esque, just executed on a (12-string?) guitar and played in the context of a rock song rather than jazz. I'll admit my ignorance having not been born 'til about 20 years after this came out, but I get the impression jazz and rock shared a lot of common ground at the time, as opposed to these days when a lot of rock musicians refer to "the 'J' word" with a mix of disgust and fear. -
Wordpress: BC'ers own webpages
EliasMooseblaster replied to SimonEdward's topic in General Discussion
I must admit, I had to go back and check! I've been using the rather plain-looking Ascetica. I suppose the key thing is that my blog is just a space for my own ramblings, largely independent of my band. But it's been very easy to upload or link various media to it, and if you're after the benefits of SEO then a lot of the (very little) traffic I receive seems to come from Google searches for bass-related stuff. Here 'tis... http://thecrowfrombelow.wordpress.com/ -
Ahh yeah, just checked the nut widths. The Diamond P is pretty much a P neck as usual but the T, which is the one I really liked, has more of a Jazz neck. Seems like an odd choice on something that looks like an old Tele bass. Between this and the Jaguar I'm tempted to get something with a thinner neck, put up with it for a while, then swap it out for something chunkier when I can. I know a P neck will fit the Jag, not so sure on the Schecters though.
You may even find you get used to it - I used to be quite set in my preference for chunky P necks, but it stopped bothering me after a while. Unfortunately the Schecters have a 22-fret neck, which will be slightly longer than the standard 20-fret P neck! Though I'm sure there are plenty of manufacturers who could do you a neck to those specs. PS: Yes, couldn't agree more - the T is quite a strange hybrid of old and new! PPS: Will you get a chance to test-drive before buying? Westside, on Denmark Street, has a big stock of Schecter basses in the basement if you're passing through London in the near future.
Schecter diamond P custom sounds just the ticket. They have a very good rep in the bang for buck stakes. http://www.richtonem...CFVMRtAoddlsAGg
I will second the "bang-for-buck" factor of Schecter basses. Gigged my Model T yesterday and realised I'd almost forgotten what a superb instrument it is - and would probably also be within your budget: http://www.nevadamusic.co.uk/p/SCH1858/bass-guitars/schecter/schecter-model-t-bass-butterscotch?utm_source=googlebase&utm_medium=pricecomp&utm_campaign=GoogleShopping&gclid=CNnf0YGVxb8CFcbKtAod6AMAIQ Only thing I would say is that the neck profile may not be quite your cup of tea: it's quite thin, though it has quite a wide fingerboard. Don't know how this compares to the Diamond P.

A surprisingly smooth-running affair, given the settings - we were playing at the Foodies Festival, on Bristol Harbourside, and when we got there we learned that there was only one entrance, and that we'd have to schlep our gear through the crowd. Fortunately nobody seemed to mind us doing so, and we had a very enjoyable hour playing to a very appreciative crowd. The festival organisers kindly provided the most state-of-the-art equipment to help us transport our backline:
