2. Chris, I did this when my kids were born and I didn't play any gigs for about 20 years. I made music in my home studio with various collaborators and hardly played any bass at all. The kids are in their mid - late 20s now and I have been back in gigging bands for the past 8 years. It was odd taking my bass out of it's case for the first time after it's long sabbatical, but I'm enjoying playing and band life more than ever. Everything has it's time and season - enjoy yourself
  3.
Careful those guys running a wired IEM setup - you really need a limiter in there or otherwise at the first sign of feedback you'll be having very hurty ears!
Oh, I didn't think of that - could you get feedback through headphones fed from the monitor sends on the desk?
As for the johnston thing... lets not go there eh?
Sorry man - I didn't know it was a sore point - must have taken him ages to delete all those posts though
  5.
I thought wired 'phones would be too restricting for the guitarist and bass player (me).
I was only going to use them for the singer, we would still have a vocal monitor or two for the rest of us. The singer always complains that he wants to be louder in the monitor and that can produce feedback, so IEM would help him hear himself better. We can't afford a proper wireless set up though.
  6. I like it.
  7. I like the idea of budget IEM via wired headphones - going to look into that, thanks Owen.

Thanks RR - he was here less than 2 years and managed 3,662 posts, I wonder if he misses us.

Sorry to but in, but why did Johnston leave? He was a regular poster and I wondered what happened to him.
  10.
That diesnt seem to be the right url to me, it jsut goes to the front page of soundcloud - or am I being dense??
I had the same problem when clicking the link, but it works fine if you copy and paste it. It must be the way it was entered via BCs link option.
  11.
I think it's a little unrealistic to expect people to download the tracks to listen (it's optimistic enough to expect many to listen to different variations of the same track several times)
They are big files to download, so I doubt most people will download them all. The option is good to have though, because it might be useful to download the 2 or 3 favourites for further appraisal after auditioning them on soundcloud.
  12.
And overall, the improvements in technique, and again confidence, have given me a much more prominent, upfront and bassier sound. There's a lot more to it, many minor nuances that have helped but I've described the larger changes.
Thanks, it's interesting how we all play and I think there is no universally correct way. I have quite a heavy touch and heavy gauge flatwound strings help with my tone. String type has quite a big effect on my tone, but I still sound like me on any strings. I have never had a lesson and I'm happy with my tone, but I often wish I could sound like some other players who use a lighter touch and play faster than I can. I would say tone is about 90-95% in the player and 5-10% in the gear. It's not all in the fingers though, the head and the heart have their parts too.
  13. Great, thanks for the link.
  14.
Find a bass you like and forget names and image.
Best advice yet.
  15. I only ever mix to 16 bit 44k so I can burn cds, but I take the point about SoundCloud's compression. There's no problem sharing the file anywhere, we're not precious about our music.
  16.
Its [s]almost like[/s] a form of brain washing.
Fixed
  17. There are some great ideas in all the mixes and the range of approaches is amazing. Can I suggest everyone allows downloads on their mix, so they can be listened to anywhere without streaming on line. Should my original mix be included in the competition? Steve.
  18.
Fretmeister has got a very nice example up for sale as we speak: http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1907005 If it's anything like mine was, you could do a lot worse than take a punt on it
I agree that looks like a very nice bass. My favourite Jazz apart from the '63 is a Jap one.
  19. Hutton makes an excellent point and a decent tech should be able to make any Fender type bass play and feel good. If you want to spend 1k and you want a Fender, try a few and buy the one that peaks to you. You can get it set up to your specs later
  20. The Fender Custom Shop models might suit you better and I would expect a marked increase in quality over the Standard models. I've never played one though. Squier comparisons:
  21. I like it and I hope it helps get you were you need to be
  22. The Squier CVs are made by Grand Design in China and they are very good indeed, Farida is their own name and I think they are even better than the Squiers. Some of the new Fenders are now made at the same factory and these are getting very good reviews, but I'm yet to try one. I would contact Dawsons about the Farida P bass and also PM Daz on here, (I think he has one) they have doubled in price since I got mine, but still a lot cheaper than a Fender. The cheap price along with the fact that they are only available through Dawsons has not done them any favours. If they had a more trendy name, they could sell for a lot more and they would be more popular. I notice you mentioned light weight and that can be be a downside with the Faridas, If I was after a brand new P bass on a budget, I'd agree with Lozz and try this: http://www.fender.com/en-GB/basses/precision-bass/matt-freeman-precision-bass/
  23.
I'll mention it again, a bit of tutoring on my fingering technique (stop sniggering!) improved my tone massively. It made my good Overwater sound amazing. Nothing to do with the bass, all to do with how I was playing it.
What exactly did you learn about fingering technique? I want to improve my tone massively and I know the instrument is only a small part of the equation. PS: Sorry if you've already told this story
  24. It would be interesting to compare a few Fender clones with the real thing blind fold. I think the Faridas would come out very well indeed, mine hasn't needed any adjustments since buying new - perfect intonation, action and relief. It was £149 and is easily as good if not better than any new Fender or Lakland that I've played. I suggest closing your eyes and opening your mind.
  25. I don't know about Precisions, but the best new Jazz I have played is the Farida which is easily as good if not better than any new Fender I tried. http://www.dawsons.co.uk/blog/farida-fjb6
