1. OK, No 2nd Chance it is then - I'll get the stems on sound cloud asap. There's not too much spill cos the drums are close mic'd and the vocals were overdubbed on this one. The guitar, bass and keyboards were DI'd and we were all on headphones with a click track. From memory the tracks are: lead vocal backing vocal bass guitar electric guitar 1 electric guitar 2 Nord lead keyboard kick drum snare top snare below hi hats ride cymabal djembe There should have been an overhead drum mic, but I think I forgot to switch on the phantom power...... Anyway, I hope you have fun with it and I'll be interested to hear any results - no pressure Steve.
2. That's no problem Si, we record everything live with no FX, so they're all clean full length wavs that will sync up in any DAW. If there are any overdubs, they can be rendered separately to sync with the rest. The track on sound cloud called 'No Second Chance' is quite a challenge to mix because it has quiet and loud sections, so getting it to sound well balanced and punchy is hard. It's also one of the tracks we recorded to a click track, so easier for editing.
3. Yes it's Sly & Robbie meets the Celtic fringe! And I forgot about the horns - a single cornet, sometimes overdubbed. The album tracks were mixed by me and my nephew and mastered by a friend. The sound cloud ones are un-mastered demos and we have a stack more to go at. We record all our sessions live in Cubase and rarely get time to mix them properly, other than to bung on some pre set compression and reverb plug ins.
4. I'm fine with the rules and I'll gladly credit anyone and even buy them a drink if the song charts I've had my home mixed songs played on BBC radio Wales and radio 6 so far, but I hate mixing and put the least effort in as I can get away with. Is there a particular site to upload stems to or shall I just use one of the many file sharing sites? My stuff is lo-fi, recorded live in my front room so may not be of a good enough standard (no problem if so). 5.
They will turn you instantly into Jaco Pastorius for about £70.
Yeh right
6. I've got loads of multi tracks that need mixing and I'd be very happy for anyone to have a go if they really want to. Original reggae, funk, soul and jazz style - bass, drums, keys, guitar and vocals all on separate tracks.
Whilst trawling the web on my hunt for small amps I noticed that the Harley Benton version is no longer available. 9. I just bought one of these silver series Squiers in original condition and it's a very nice Jazz bass. Lightweight, with a deep tone, vintage frets and a joy to play. I don't think there's any catch - it's been stripped and a pick up replaced. The price seems reasonable enough if everything else is ok. edit - just noticed the grounding strip to the back pup is missing.
10. Thanks, it should be easy enough to do this with the neck still attached to the body from what you say. Did you use a particular type of linseed oil? Is it shiny now or matt finish? Sorry to be dim, just a bit nervous...
11.
Getting guitarists and drummers to try it can take a little convincing, get them to play the song once without, three times with and once more without. Thats all it takes to hear the difference....
Great advice Si, I'm definitely going to try it, as soon as I figure out how to use the drum machine in Cubase No worries with the guitarist or drummer - I rule this band with an iron fist
12.
What I would suggest then (and feel free to shoot it down in flames), is try taking the set of tracks yuowish to record, get a cheap old drum machine or use your mac book, plug it nto the PA and set up a really nice hand clap on 2 and 4 and a rimclick on 1 and 3 to practice the entire band against it.. Go through the songs three times all together locking on to this click, then record one without it straight afterwards. The improvements I've had like this in bands have always been nothing short of spectacular, all the feel and none of the timing oddities....
That is a great idea and so obvious, I don't know why I've never thought of it. I will try it on our next recording session.
13. Did you remove all the lacquer before applying the linseed oil? How did you apply the linseed oil, with a cloth or brush? I have the same bass and also love the neck (and everything else about it).
14. Thanks, there seem to be various opinions on the need for lacquer, as keen be seen in this other thread: http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?app=core&module=search&do=viewNewContent&search_app=forums
15. Thanks for all the information and advice, I feel a lot less worried now. I've had the '63 Jazz since 1978 and only adjusted the truss rod a couple of times to cope with string changes. The neck doesn't seem to have moved at all, in that it plays and feels just the same as it always has. There is some lacquer still on it in the places I don't play much ie. beyond the 7th fret and on the headstock. I've only had the Squier for a couple of weeks, but I think the previous owner had it a long time. There is virtually no lacquer at all on this one and it feels and looks very bare. It doesn't bother me because it's nice to play and the neck is straight. I adjusted the truss rod slightly when I fitted higher tension strings. I do like quite a high action because I hate string buzz and rattle and I use heavy gauge flatwound strings. I'm sure the old Fender is fine, but I'm still slightly concerned about the Squier. Is there a protective oil that could be applied with a cloth while the neck is still attached to the body, because I hate removing necks?
16. I read this in another post from silddx:
instrument wood needs protecting from moisture loss (and absorbtion), especially necks as they can become unstable and move around, depending on humidity and temperature.
I have heard this before and it got me thinking (and worrying) about a couple of my basses. I also have a '90s silver series Squier Jazz bass that has no lacquer left on the neck because the previous owner stripped it off by over cleaning it - is this neck also unstable? What about a new relic or road worn instrument that has most of the neck lacquer missing?

21. I bought a Squier Silver series Jazz bass from Owen and it's a beauty. The man is a legend, trade with confidence.
22. Very nice indeed, I'd love to try one of these - without the extra string of course......
23. Thanks for the replies, I'm trying to resist buying one to replace my Ashbory as a travel bass. Not that I ever travel........
