WTF is it with Thomann?! They seem to send out loads of dodgy gear.
Why do you say this - do you have evidence that their quality control is below average?

Fender CS 1964 Jazz Bass in Sea Foam Green
redstriper replied to Old Horse Murphy's topic in Gear Gallery
Unfortunately not mate. They come with those horrid Fender Roundwound strings
Why do they do that? - custom build an instrument to be a replica of a vintage modeI and then fit strings that weren't even invented when the original bass was produced. I wonder how many buyers change them to flats. -

I only tried rounds once - didn't really like them - felt funny and ruff.... I won't give them another go Until I have to next time I try a new bass - because they all come with rounds

Rotosound flats are the most round alike sounding IME.

Advice on recommended Squier CV 60's Jazz upgrades please...
redstriper replied to mashup's topic in Bass Guitars
Mine is 9.5 lbs and I think the average is about 9. I'm sure you will like the CV - I have 6 Jazz basses and the CV is the favourite of everyone who has played them all, from old codgers to young bucks. Another great budget bass is the Farida range that Dawsons sell, they are made in the same factory as the CVs and their quality is on a par with much more expensive instruments. -

It's not a question of what pick ups will work well with this (or any) bass. It's a question of what pick ups will suit you and we are all different in our tonal preferences. There is nothing wrong with the stock pick ups and I wouldn't consider changing them before you've played the bass at a few gigs, never mind before you've even laid hands on it. String choice and your fingers will have a much greater effect on the tone than the pick ups. You really need to know exactly what is wrong with the tone before you try fixing it, otherwise you are just stabbing in the dark. Wait until you've got the bass, set it up to suit you, play it a lot and see how you feel then. -

I have one of these and it is a great bass, way better than the Mex Jazz I also had. The best part is the neck, which is as close to a 60s Fender as I have played. The electrics are fine IME, with no need to upgrade (unlike the MIM Fender). The pick ups are ok and on a par with the MIM Fender, but they are not as powerful as my '63 Fender and not as flexible. You need to play close to them or the sound weakens and they don't have the authority of a US Fender. But they still sound fine and a good player will work within their limits and have no problem. Replacing pick ups is probably the biggest upgrade you could do, but it's risky and I would stick with the originals before spending money that may end in disappointment. The tuners are fine. Hope this helps. Steve. -
Full marks all round and thanks to the basschat massive, I knew you'd come through and so quick too. I want one btw

Farida FJB-6 £80 plus effects pedal on Gumtree Edinburgh
redstriper replied to gjones's topic in eBay - Weird and Wonderful
or am i just getting a bit carried away with his playing and it actually is the guitar? why do I do this? I love the sound of Jazzes, but when I play them I don't!
His playing is amazing and he can make any bass sound great, but no one sounds better on an expensive bass, so why waste the money? I don't play anything like him, my style is reggae and soul music, for which the Farida is perfect (with a change to flatwounds). I bought a Farida Jazz blind on the strength of that review, not really knowing what to expect and I am genuinely blown away. It easily compares to basses costing far more and it just exudes quality. If it said Lakland (or similar) on the headstock and was priced at £700, it would be perfectly acceptable. I sold my Mexican Fender because this put it to shame and it's better than my Squier CV, which is made in the same factory and is a lovely bass with a gorgeous neck, but the pick ups on the Farida are more powerful and the whole thing feels more solid. The truss rod is adjusted at the heel and the neck is very straight with perfect intonation and excellent tonal balance across the strings. If I was closer I would buy that Farida for £80 (with gig bag and fx box) - you can't really go wrong at that price. But I wouldn't buy it blind just in case there's a major problem with no return option. -
I think blind tests where the reviewer doesn't know the make or value of the instrument would be a great idea, if you can find someone brave enough to do it - maybe someone who actually is blind. As soon as anyone sees the name on the headstock and the price tag, it colours their view and it would be very interesting to see what happens without that bias.
See the video above. It would make a very nice spare bass. They're very decent build quality made in the same factory in China the CV Squiers are made. I'd buy it but I already have two nice Jazzes.
Buy it anyway, it's a steal at that price and much better than the Squier imo - I have both. But then I've got 4 nice Jazz basses You're not a twit - Fodera/Farida makes no difference unless you're a rich snob and the Farida is a fine instrument (if a bit on the heavy side). -

The neck is superb and better than many Fender ones I've played. Perfect intonation, no dead spots, fast and smooth, with vintage size frets. -

I have this model and it is a great bass regardless of price and better than many more expensive Jazzes I have played. Excellent news, everything has it's time, and this is your time It sounds like my band and I thank my lucky stars to have found such a perfect scene after all these years.

I emailed Andy to ask which Jazz pick ups he recommended for reggae and he said none of his were suitable because they are too articulate. I bought a Wizard 84 neck pick up anyway and was quite disappointed. Some people rave about them, so it must be subjective, but I wasn't impressed. Changing pick ups is risky and potentially expensive - good luck Edit: I like the Duncan designed pups in my Squier VM and I love the Farida ones in their basic Jazz bass.

Sorry if this has already been suggested, but I would love you to do the following: Get a selection of Jazz basses in for review - high and low end Fenders, along with both cheap and expensive copies, like Squiers, Faridas, Laklands and Sadowskys. Then let reviewers compare them blindfold........ and no cheating! Then you could do the same with Precisions

I remember when all basses came with flatwounds as standard and roundwounds were only available on special order - the opposite of today's situation. I tried rounds because they were the 'new thing' used by Jaco and the Ox, but I never liked them. I posted a poll some time ago and it seems I'm in the minority: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/124992-i-want-to-complain/page__hl__poll+flat+wound+strings__fromsearch__1
I only use Chromes - tried most of them on the PRSs and Chromes sound awesome. I have changed from 45-100s to 50-105s as they seem to have more depth of tone (and hold drop D better).... The big secret (if there is one) with flats is dont change them too often - flats seems to get better when they are no longer stretching. If you play everyday you can get at least a year out of them. Rounds (if your after a zingy sound which is the main reason for using them) go 'dead' very quickly. Im my opine of course, its hardly a definative thing tone.
I change strings about every 10 years and It takes at least a year for a new set to settle in .
