Here is a thread about a luthier making a 6.5 pound Jazz. http://www.tdpri.com/forum/tele-home-depot...bass-build.html
Wow - just wow.
I wish you hadn't changed your avatar - I didn't recognise you at first! That Senator is a lovely bass, but I'm not without it ... I still have two Presidents (a 1959 Sutcliffe and a 1965) so I still have that wonderful woody tone available on tap. Trouble is, you can't play those basses on stage at modern gigging volumes. The feedback just gets uncontrollable. (IMHO of course.)
Yes I haven't aged well have I ? I only played the Senator at home and on some recordings, where it sounds great, I wasn't aware of feedback problems at gigs and I wouldn't ask Owen to lend it me for a live gig in case I broke it. I'm still looking for the perfect lightweight bass with a heavy dub tone and still playing the old jazz bass until I find one. I nearly bought a lovely '74 Musicmaster last week, but the tone isn't quite there and I'm going to try a Danelectro this week, expecting the same story......... Enjoy your Streamline, they are amazing instruments and we are in the 21st C. (allegedly).
If you want the 'old school woody tone' save yourself £1350 and buy an epiphone EB0. If you want a bass that you can 'hear' on stage buy a Streamline And considering construction, I don't see how this bass could be made any better without encrusting it with jewels - maybe I have low expectations - played Fenders and MM's for years Seriously though, this is horses for courses, if you've got a problem with the 'graphite' sound fair enough, however having used a Streamline in just about every setting over the last couple of years I've found the sound very versatile and far less harsh than I expected. If you want it to sound 'dub' or 'old school' use the eq!
Ive had an EB-0 and found it too growly and clanky - not my scene at all and not fixable with EQ. I also spent some time trying to EQ a smooth, woody old school tone from the Streamline, to no avail - I would love to hear a sample of your Streamline EQd to sound like a vintage Hofner or Fender. If you can make it sound truly 'dub' like on an old King Tubby mix, I will think again. To me, it's a modern bass with a modern sound and I appreciate it's incredible build quality, stunning looks and fantastic range of tones, but the sound and feel leave me cold. And I've never had a problem hearing myself on stage with any bass - I simply turn the volume up

Bolin Basses... the shortest thread ever! ;0)
redstriper replied to warwickhunt's topic in Gear Gallery
The Piezo in the Bolin is all I thought they should be but I had never actually heard. I am not particularly fussed about the airy top end (but it is certainly there), it is the rich as chocolate low end which sends me (maaaan). The bottom end seems to extend all the way down. It is not a muddy rumble, just really clean and smooth with real LF extension.
Now I'm interested -
Wood is over-rated.
I played your old Senator recently and that has a lovely woody sound that you won't get with your Streamline, whatever pick ups it's got - the Senator is lighter too. The Streamline is a fab thing though and I really wanted to like it, but graphite is SO over-rated man
I would love one, but how much?
Careful - I thought that until I tried one and didn't like the sound at all. If you like a woody old school tone, you will be disappointed. Looks great though and the quality is indisputable.
I can strongly recommend the Ibanez SR600 - I bought one about 6 weeks ago, largely prompted by months of pain in my left shoulder - at it's worst I couldn't move my arm above shoulder height. My shoulder is now fine. The SR600 is not only light, but balances well on the strap.
How does it sound ? I want a light bass, but all the new ones I've tried are too modern sounding - I like an old school deep smooth tone for reggae, soul, jazz and funk. My old Fender jazz has got the tone, but it weighs a ton. I haven't tried an Ibanez yet.

I know what you mean about carrying heavy rigs after gigs and I've got rid of my Trace rig now. I use a Markbass LM2 with one or two Flite 152 cabs - it sounds great for reggae or anything else I do and those Flite cabs are f...lite alright !
great sound, crap quality. My mate ended up replacing his tuning pegs with 50p coins as the origionals all snapped off
All 4 pegs broke ! Is your friend a gorilla or just accident prone - I can't believe they all do that. And they'd be replaced under warranty if they did.

I changed the driver in my MAG 115 cab for an Eminence neo 3015LF. I had to widen the hole slightly with a spoke shave, but the screws lined up and it was an easy job. It sounded much better to my ears, deeper and louder and it also weighed a lot less. I've put different drivers in various cabs and never had any problems despite the science - but I live on the edge

I emailed Andy to ask which jazz neck pup he would recommend for a deep, smooth reggae tone and he replied with a short, brusque message, saying none, because he didn't make pups suitable for smooth tones - his were far too articulate for the job. I replied asking for more information, but he didn't respond - perhaps he doesn't like reggae.

Anyone ever stuck a bass pickup on a Jazz?
redstriper replied to thisnameistaken's topic in Bass Guitars
I like this idea and wish someone would do it and post sound clips. It could sound nice for reggae, where you don't want the growl of a humbucker, just the smoothness of a jazz with extra depth. Isn't there a PRS bass with a single coil right by the neck that Robbie Shakespeare played for a while ? -
Why Do You Prefer a Jazz Over a Precision?
redstriper replied to Count Bassie's topic in Bass Guitars
I prefer the sound of a jazz bass, although I mostly use just the neck pup with the tone rolled off for a smooth deep tone. Precisions don't go deep enough and they're not as smooth IME. I prefer the smaller Precision body for comfort and weight and that's what Leo did with the G&L JB-2. I don't really mind if it's a jazz or precision neck, I soon adapt to either. -
How about one of these. It says Fender on the headstock and you can return it for a refund if you don't like it, (as long as you're careful with it). If you do like it, you can still afford a set up and new strings.
I'm very very interested in these flite cabs. Apart from the website where can I find more about em? Google isn't helping much. The 112b looks good is there a tweeter? Do they have a similar tonal nature to a barefaced midget would you say? (ie loud through mid bite, or sounding 'angry') My midget t is great but if there's even lighter out there my interest is piqued!
I haven't tried any barefaced cabs, so I'm not able to help you there, but I feel mine is similar to the Compact - I don't like any of the single 12" driver cabs that I've tried and I don't know anything about loud through mid bite, or sounding 'angry' - bass just means bass to me, deep and smooth. There isn't much information available on Flite cabs, there are a few users on talkbass and I ended up phoning the company in the US. I spoke to the owner and got the feeling it's a small firm with not a lot of knowledge on cabinet design or driver specs, other than how to make very light and strong cabs. This put me off a bit, but I decided to take a chance and buy one anyway when I saw a used one here on BC. I had been considering a barefaced compact, but couldn't afford it at the time, while my back was sick of carting my heavy TE rig. The cab arrived and it's weight was a true revelation, lighter than a compact but also smaller and I wondered how it would sound. It was ok soundwise, a bit middly for my taste and lacking in real depth, (I play a lot of reggae) but not bad and certainly comparable to the other 15s I had tried, including Bergantino, Markbass, Ashdown and TE - it was certainly much better tone and volume wise than any of the single 12s I had tried by Aguilar, Markbass and Bergantino. I swapped the driver for an Eminence 3015LF, which is a neo woofer and - boom there was 'my' sound, I haven't stopped grinning since. It's very deep, smooth and loud enough for most gigs, but probably lacking in top end for people who like that kind of thing. I've since bought another identical cab, with the intention of swapping the driver again, but I decided to keep the original Eminence delta because it works well with the other cab, offering some mid punch whilst increasing the volume of clean deep bass. I bought the 2nd cab off ebay from a very nice BCer called rainbass and he sold another at the same time, which had a 6" driver and a tweeter along with the 15. I didn't buy that because I'm not into tweeters or treble of any kind and it sold for about £113 from memory, which was a steal. rainbass imported both cabs and I'm sure he wouldn't mind you PMing him for information - I believe Flite will customise their cabs to suit requirements. I waited a year to find my 2nd cab and I considered ordering one from the US, I would have ordered without the driver to reduce weight and fit my own. It's a shame there is no UK dealer and that the exchange rate is so poor, but it might be worth ordering the 112b and then fitting the driver from your midget - that's the only way you can really compare the sound and I don't know what the result would be or whether there would be a significant improvement in weight. I am very happy with my 2 x 15s and the slight compromise in tone compared to bigger, heavier cabs is well worthwhile for the sake of the saving in weight and size. Hope this helps. Steve.

2 x 15s is perfect for reggae, I don't think you'll have any problems unless the drivers are not up to the job - which phat cab do you ordinarily use that's so much better? I used a Trace 150w combo with a single 15 for ages in a reggae band and found it plenty deep and loud enough for most gigs. It's what I used to record all the tracks here.

Saw this at Argos today.Anybody know anything....?
redstriper replied to squire5's topic in Bass Guitars
You can order it on line for collection at your local Argos, or they will deliver for a fiver. Then you can try it at home and if you don't like it, return for a full refund - not many music shops offer that service. And they're throwing in a £10 voucher at the moment. I'm thinking of ordering one as a lightweight back up for gigs and I'm interested to compare it with a 'real' Fender or Squier. The most important thing is the player, not the cost of their instrument. -
High, Bumpy frets - not to my taste
redstriper replied to Spoombung's topic in Repairs and Technical
I also like really low and thin frets, as low as possible in fact, to allow smooth slides more like a fretless but easier to play in tune. Are there any new basses with particularly low, thin frets ? -
The rotosound tru bass are quite low tension, but larger scale than TIs. Their sound is deep and old skool, no good at all for zing or clank, but great for reggae, blues and soul.
-
Rotosound tru bass black nylon covered flats are available in short scale and they are very nice and smooth - much nicer than the standard rotosound flats.
Flite cabs are nice - is there a dealer in Europe?, and, Barefaced - way too expensive for me..
Flite cabs are the lightest available anywhere AFAIK. There is no European dealer, which is mental. I know people have imported them with no problems and very fast delivery. Mine were bought used and they do come up on ebay occasionally - I paid about £175 for each of mine. I have two 15s, one with a neo driver that weighs about 10kg and the other with a ceramic driver that weighs about 12kg. It's rare that I need both at a gig and the sound is massive with my LM2.
