I find myself more in need of a decent vocal PA (or component parts thereof) than I do four bass guitars. Therefore, I am mostly looking for a trade for PA gear. I need a decent vocal PA for pub use, so nothing huge or fancy needed. I am also quite happy to sell for folding cash. Cash adjustments possible (although not much from my end at the moment) The 55-02 is in excellent condition with no issues at all. It's currently strung with Flatwounds. Any inspections, questions etc. very welcome. This picture is stolen off the web but is of an identical bass. I will post some pictures of the real thing later on.

...and home via Southport visiting while I was at it. A long, but productive day. Thanks again Li

Met Li on Saturday (funnily enough in Sainsburys via Piccadilly station - although upmarket, in the cafe) and exchanged my Bongo for his ACG. Great communication, nice guy everything exactly as described. Cheers!!

Random injury causing pain and can't play bass?
thepurpleblob replied to Greggo's topic in General Discussion
A session at a physiotherapist shouldn't be the end of the world money-wise and is worth it! -
You guys are reading something into what I wrote that wasn't intended. However, be my guest
This I don't understand. I'm the player I am never mind what band I'm in! I the band insists on dictating the gear I use, and they're paying enough, then I'll change but not otherwise.
As in... "which bass will I take?". Nothing more philosophical than that. One tends to gravitate towards a particular bass. Well, I do anyway.

I keep thinking "I'm a five string player" and then the next year something (e.g. the band) changes and it's "I'm a four string player". I've always played both more-or-less interchangeably; I've never been sure what side of the fence I sit. Anyway, it's always an excuse to get new stuff if you change your mind.

Question about trading my Warwick from Sweden
thepurpleblob replied to DSBass's topic in General Discussion
I've used general parcel companies (e.g. ParcelMonkey) to ship within Europe a few times and had no issues. I send quite a bit of stuff to Germany and it's usually cheaper than shipping within the UK!! As long as you find a sensible shipping company it should be as easier as shipping within your own country. However, as you say, it's always an excuse for a "road trip" -
This is very speculative - I actually really like this bass but I hardly play 4 strings any more so I'm really wondering if I can find something 'interesting' in a 5 string. You will know if you like the Bongo or not but this is surprisingly light, has great tone and the HS arrangement gives real flexibility - the single coil actually makes a proper contrast from the standard humbucker, not the usual vague hint of difference. I'm up for a trade with something of similar value in a 5 string (only). I'm not too fussed except that I just play in a pub band, so nothing too twee. Also, I don't get on with narrow string spacing so no 5 strings crammed into the space meant for 4!! Other than that give me a try. Ideas: Something high-end Yamaha (5P, Nathan East)? Something Warwick broad-neck? Bongo 5.... I live in the outskirts of Glasgow and would prefer to do an exchange in person. I don't mind travelling almost anyway with a railway station (wife works on the trains == cheap) for the right deal. Don't be offended if I say no - if I don't find the right thing I'll happily keep it. I only took one picture but I'm happy to get more if there's interest. Condition is excellent. Just the usual scuff on its nose where it has met the ceiling at some point!

Why Do People Think Set-Ups Are Magic?
thepurpleblob replied to Lowender's topic in General Discussion
My view of almost everything, is that I'd rather spend the money on the tools than pay someone else. Then I have the tools for next time - and I know how to do it (more or less). Some 'trades' just like to make things sound mysterious. Plumbers and electricians are the worst :-D -
Why Do People Think Set-Ups Are Magic?

If I wire a plug I cut all the wires to the correct length and then solder the bared wires. I'm THAT geeky. I think it depends what you mean by a 'setup'. If I put different strings on I can set the neck relief, correct the intonation and action etc. without giving it a second thought. However, if you mean fiddling with frets and adjusting the nut height and such then that's a bit different. I'm not sure I call that a 'setup' though. -
Not all recordings are in tune though. A lot of early Decca stuff (Stones, Small Faces etc.) seems to be a quarter tone o.n.o off; It was common practice back in the day to adjust the speed of a recording to either give it a bit more oomph or to bring it inside the 2 mins 30 limit for radioplay. Also, there's no guarantee that Turntables, tape decks and I daresay CD players run at the same speed as the mastering equipment, & I harbour a suspicion that some MP3 rippers affect pitch slightly too. Add into the mix that plenty of artists (e.g. Early Sabbath, Bon Scott era AC/DC, Stevie Ray Vaughan etc.etc.) downtune a semitone, & occasional retuning on the fly is a given if you're learning a mixed bag of covers.
It's rarely a problem but does turn up on old 70s stuff. If it's something tricky and I have an irrational desire to get it spot on, I tweak the audio in Transcribe! so we agree (quicker than tweaking me, so to speak).

Hmmm... it doesn't really trouble me. I always have a tuner in the signal chain, so the first thing I do is to check the tuning. If I go to a gig, I try to get the bass on a stand out of it's case quite quickly. By the time we gig it will need a bit of a tweak. This is any bass I have ever owned, which is quite a reasonable sample size now.
