1. This would all drop in to place if you tell me that "Dick Venom" is a tax inspector during the day I like your guitarist better than ours too !!!
2. Everyone who is better than me... which is nearly everyone in percentage terms It's more that a very few players soak up all the glory (Flea - I'm looking at you) often for no special reason.
3. The odd time I have looked into insurance I couldn't see any possible scenario where the insurance company would pay out. The requirements are nuts - basically you can't leave the equipment alone unless it's in a building with hyper-security. Bit pointless. Anybody here actually had a policy pay out?
4. Ernie Ball Slinkies - the lightest gauge. D'Addarios are ok too if that's all there is. DRs are nice but a bit pricey (I've never found that expensive strings last longer than cheaper ones). The only strings (that I have tried) that I can't stand are Rotosound. They appear to use the same wire you put in band-saws
5. Doctor... if nothing else to eliminate anything other possible problems.
6. I was fiddling with my strap height and wotnot as I do from time to time and I just thought I'd ask around. I have my bass at a high-ish stomach height but it was the angle(s) it sits at that I was more wondering about. I noticed a picture of one (professional female) player and the neck must have been pointing out at about 45 degrees in front of them with the body of their bass sitting on their hip more-or-less. What about you guys. Apart from "whatever suits you" do you have any recommendations? I don't think I have ever found a compromise that is entirely comfortable.
7. Just sold Diego my Musicman SUB. All the way to Sunny Spain. Great guy to deal with, no hesitation in recommending for future deals!
8.
Hi, I´m from Spain , and I´ve bought him his (now mine ) MM Sub. Fast transaction (via Paypal) and excellent comunication and awesome packing!! . Thank u very much, a really good deal. Hope c u again over here!!
A pleasure... hope you enjoy the bass!
9. You can't beat a nice defined bottom end...... WELL... someone had to do it
10. I know this isn't what you are asking.... but why aren't you doing it yourself?
11. Make sure it's insured - properly. That means NOT ParcelFarce. If it gets nicked and you have 50 quid cover then you get 50 quid, end of.
12. I sense some negativity
13. Really? I ask because I don't think I have a great right hand technique. I tend to 'pop' the strings a bit - i.e. not pluck at 90 degrees. I wondered if one might help. Get a bit of timber and start sanding I suppose. How close to the strings should it be?
14. The block of wood between the pickups... I think that's what it's called. I occasionally see players using them. Why? And why might I want one...
15. Yeh - I've never played in bands that regularly play the "pay to play" venues but it sounds about right. The odd one or two that I have played have been dreadful holes. I wouldn't have been there "on my own time" - no chance!
16. I think the bass is simply a versatile instrument that can fulfil a variety of roles - forget that at your peril. Personally I subscribe to the "the bass is there to make the guitars sound good" view point but - to pick up another thread doing the rounds at the moment - that doesn't make the hairy guy out of Dirty Loops (and the like) any less impressive. BTW... I saw Blur the other night and I enjoyed their stuff. I think people just like to have a dig. They're up there doing it while we're bored at our desk jobs passing comment
17. My first gig was to play three songs in one of those multi-band charity gigs. It was fabulous. I'm not sure I've ever played quite so well again
18. Youtube to the rescue... bit jazzy for my tastes but they are tighter than a very tight thing. My TRB is glaring at me from its hook on the wall....
19. I just realised that this is a band. Every time I hear "Dirty Loops" I think it's a low-fi plugin for Garageband.... or worse!
20. You have to be dead before you skip a gig. It's the law
21. I started out as a classical percussionist. You can play drums *very* quietly..... if you want to. Drummers love to say that they can't play quietly. A lot of 'rock' musicians (for want of a better word) have never heard of dynamics. It sorts the men from the boys!
22. I always thought that Nelson was a great player - at least he could do some fabulous things with a minor pentatonic Certainly beyond me!
23. I started with the bass and not the guitar so I know what you mean. I did take a few guitar lessons a few years ago and just couldn't do it. My fingers would not bend into those shapes. I had new found respect for guitarists - but don't tell anyone
24. Only individuals... the guy who thinks it's funny and original to come up and try to twang your strings. Even then it's best to keep smiling. These people are paying your wages (probably).
25. What sort of bass are we talking about. My Musicman basses (even the 18V Bongo) have very low outputs. A passive Precision will blow them into the dust. In fact - rather counter intuitively - I have found that passive basses fairly consistently have higher outputs than actives.
