1. I'm surprised that I couldn't find reference to this already... probably just me. Anyway, if you haven't already noticed, Primus have a couple of UK dates in the Summer. Manchester and Brighton IIRC. First gigs in 14 years it seems.
2.
http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=120065 elites?
It seemed to be Elites or Rotosound. I liked them because they have a very smooth finish, which Routosounds definitely do not. Elites it is
3. Weird question... which strings have dark-blue silk at the pointy end AND red silk at the bridge end?
4.
I regularly growl at Youtube. There's a chap on there, DavidSinRocks, who always makes me look sh*t. Quick edit - I assume we're both talking about the same guy, as he has a blinding cover of that track!
Yep - that's the guy. He needs a slap for the extra twiddly bits but he's young EDIT: Oh God... I just saw some of his other stuff. Yeh - ok, I'm packing in now.
5. After years and years of avoiding it, I finally had to learn "Are You Gonna Be My Girl". It's still not quite right but getting there. I've been growling at the kid on youtube who has it absolutely spot on
6.
I Predict a Riot by the Kaiser Chiefs for a wedding gig. Love them or hate them, their bassist, whoever he is, can't half play. The line is intense - all over the neck, high and low, fast 8ths, twiddly high-register bits and a couple of huge leaps. By the end, I'm knackered. Very satisfying indeed.
It's a great line.. I've played it in three different bands now. Unfortunately, nobody (i.e. guitarists) ever listens and tries to play it as some horrific loud thrash when there actually quite a bit of subtlety.
7. Top man etc. Shady meeting behind Maplin's in Glasgow (in the pissing rain) to buy his Bongo. Absolutely no problems at all - everything as expected and friendly guy. Deal in confidence!
8.
Howard is truely a top bloke, good comms and drove a 200 mile round trip to make the deal work, and took the time to have a good chat to boot. The lovely old P he sold me will be loved, cherished and played, Cheers H Take it easy and thanks again, r
A pleasure
9. Thoroughly nice bloke - drove up to a random pub in Penrith to buy my P bass. Great communication and no bother at all. Highly recommended.

But you could do that Sunday morning if you wish....just dont forget the paypal receipt. Dave
Can I do it on my iPhone and show you the screen ???? Sorry.... I'm having a "being annoying" day. Instructions duly noted
12. Out: Overwater Perception 5 string In: MusicMan StingRay 5 string
13. The weekend is still dark and mysterious... can I just turn up (on Sunday) if I find I have time? I have nothing interesting to bring... well, I should have a Bongo 4HS by Sunday so I can bring that and you can all laugh at me!
14.
I can understand why they wouldn't become regulars, maybe look in occasionally as a guest or look at it on someone else's computer but not get directly involved. Irrespective of all the squabbling, to the really well known players it's a job and has been for many years. Do all of us with regular day jobs go home and then log on to user forums so directly related to what we do every day for a living? Not me.
Yes! ............... oh God, I didn't realise how sad I am
15. Old (50 in less than 3 years, how did that happen?) jobbing covers band bass player. IT geek in real life and it probably shows in my attitude. Been playing bass for about 10 years. I was brought up as a classical percussionist which makes me think that reading music and theory are fundamental... not that I'm any kind of expert at either. I play 4-strings mostly but I can pretty much interchangeably play a 5 if it's needed. I actually started on a 5 for some reason. Influences - a bunch of dudes from the 80s who nobody remembers and some from the 60s who we do. Why can nobody play like that any more? I play covers and always have. It's about playing the right notes at the right volume in the right place most of the time. Talking about being a melodic/busy/basic/etc player has no resonance with me. I guess I am still learning. I don't know how to improvise and I can't play slap / tap / play with a pick / solo / sing. It would all be nice I suppose but I don't really care I really like MusicMan basses - that unfussy sound (proper bass). I sound a bit negative.... I do enjoy it, honestly
16. Interesting discussion. I find that I remember the complicated songs and forget the simple three-chord ones. It seems to get worse if I have been playing them for ages. What annoys me are those people who seem to be able to remember every song they ever learned. If I haven't played something for a couple of months it's like I never knew it
17.
Re- We play Are You Gonna Be My Girl. Once you've got your fingers around it, its fine....just don't cock up the intro!!
Yeh - it's one of those keep at it until you get it or your fingers bleed - whichever happens first
18. Unless you have surplus cash (which you don't) having a bass that is so precious you won't take to gigs is just daft. Either go and batter it off some walls to get over it and use it or sell it. Excuse brutal bluntness Amps are much more complicated things than basses. I would only have one bass but I would never not have a backup/reliable amp.
19. I'm sure I've told my cautionary tale before but I bought an Overwater a while back. Now, don't get me wrong, it was a thing of beauty, the quality was outstanding and (in the shop) it sounded incredible. In my band it sounded awful and no amount of adjustment or different strings made it sound good. The thing is, I play in a pub covers band. If I'd thought for ten seconds, who plays a fancy custom bass in a pub covers band? It didn't make any sense at all and it just didn't sound (or look probably) the part. That's what Leo Fender made basses for, so it was back to the Musicman which sounded (as usual) great and appropriate. Moral - have a very clear understanding of what role the instrument is intended to play. Sometimes a battered old Precision is actually exactly the right thing, no matter how little or how much it costs!
20. I found a live version in which the bass is both different and (oddly) better recorded. Problem solved
21. Oh stuff it.... blow the dust off the 5 string
22. Been asked to learn this.... struggling to get it to sound anything like (embarrassing for what I expected to be a five minute song to learn)... anybody play this? Is it in some weird tuning or something? Help appreciated Oh... and Are You Gonna Be My Girl is bloody difficult too, but that's more because my fingers won't go in the right places at the right time
23. I would say only if you definitely know what you want and it's not just an excuse to blow the money. I've found out before that high-end custom basses are unlikely to be "better" if what you do is play eight-note rock in a pub. You suddenly have to get very sensible and honest with yourself.
24. It's not actually a virus until you panic and press "Ok" (or Cancel or anything....). It's a nasty bit of social engineering. If you get something like that, just close the page or tab. Don't give it permission to download something - which will be a virus. As has been said - but in all seriousness - I couldn't put up with all that crap. Most people only use their computers to browse the web anyway. Get a free copy of Ubuntu and install it, then sit back and laugh at these things
25.
Have no fear clergymanofthemountain, I shall be meeting blue/redshapeofindeterminateproportions on wed in a barn, (ahem, agricultural hotel....) this very Wednesday. R
Errr.... what he said!!
