Is there any Bass Conventions in scotland?
thepurpleblob replied to Bass_Guardian's topic in General Discussion
if your so eager to go am sure whatever god you pray to won't mind. I'm pretty sure they have places of prayer in Moffat too.
I don't understand religion either, but I learned a long time ago to shut up about it (along with, "why did you marry her?" and "why on earth did you buy a Kia??") -
I've worked with Scots nearly all my life and always found them to be favourable to a bit of travelling. Obviously some of you 'Central Belt' bass playing types might prove the exception Calling a Borderer English is dangerous ground, they think of themselves as more on the 'front line' than those REMF's tucked further North. Peter
I'm about 30 minutes away and transport isn't a problem. It's quite a drag for the highlanders though. -

I dunno... Moffat's *nearly* England........ -
...in which case it will be good for you. I've been in a similar situation. I started playing bass about 9 years ago in my late 30s so it's almost inevitable that you'll play with people more experienced. I've had a couple of situations where I've just had to say "I don't understand how to do/play that (but I'll go and learn it)". Don't over-extend yourself I suppose. You can learn loads from these "old timers" though
-
Eliminate stressors. Learn the songs until you can play them in your sleep having made sure you agree the key and which version in advance. Then you'll be confident, you'll look confident and you'll show you can deliver. Don't be tempted to show off - not the first time, anyway Mustang Sally isn't an easy bass line - everybody just tells you it is!!

Wear it and send the bass

It's one of those two-hundred-bands-you-have-never-heard-of-a-night stylee places. Think small bar with small stage. An honourable mention to CC Music over in the West End (Otago Street) BTW. If you want something decent to eat, Nanakusa is very good (more or less next door) and the crappy looking Noode Bar right across the road does big plates of dead-good Chinese.

Ernie Ball Slinkies... they are pleasantly dull sounding from new and have quite a smooth finish. I particularly dislike Rotosounds which sound like old dustbin lids and feel like barbed wire. I've used, and like, DRs but they don't seem to justify the extra spend over the EBs.
And who on Earth's Matt Bury - apart from being pudgy-faced & even uglier than me? And not a ginger tosser, which is what I am when not monochrome.
As in the IT Crowd... -

Overwater Perception 5 string. I did try it in the shop and it sounded great but it was horrible on my rig when I got it home. I went through about 150 quids worth of strings trying to sort it but it was all high-end harmonics and string noise. I swapped bassbluestu for a Stingray and he said he liked it, so it may well just have been me. Looked lovely, incredible build quality, sounded pants It's depressing that the only basses I've ever properly likes were designed by Mr. Fender. How dull

Just for the record, here's some interesting reading.... http://www.paypalsucks.com/forums/showforum.php?fid=17 -
The Streets Have No Name..... after about 10 minutes of guitar noodling.
Balls. The tiny speakers in my ipod earphones produce an excellent bass sound. Frank.
Actually they don't. They produce the harmonics of excellent bass sound and your brain makes up the other bit. Like lots of things... it's complicated

Ones that don't have a bit of humility... ones that think they are better than they are, if you will. A good player plays something appropriate within the confines of their own ability (we can all be better, skill isn't an absolute). PS. Why does Adam Clayton get such a hard time? I don't even like U2 and he might not be the most technical player but he seems to fit in. At least he knows about slides and some of the frets above the 7th. There's plenty of players earning more than you and me who only know how to play 8ths on the root in first position

Audition Hell - Is this just me?
thepurpleblob replied to Wolverinebass's topic in General Discussion
There is a principle that I have successfully applied to hiring in business - "don't hire arses"!! Never mind all that cr*p about competencies and wotnot - a decent person will learn to do the job properly an idiot will always be an idiot no matter how good their skills. You have to spend a lot of time with each other in a band. Getting on with each other is *the* most important thing - the rest will fall out naturally. -

I hope you take this in the positive spirit in which it is intended but your post comes over as arrogant. I'm not saying you are but you do sound that way and that might be causing you problems. You say you want to learn but then say that you won't be dictated to. How does that work? Surely learning involves an element of doing what you are told. I've always worked on the basis that I am probably wrong and probably don't know best... it has served be well. Having said all that, there are a great many idiots out there and you might just have been unlucky. Keeping looking, don't give up and it'll work out sooner or later. -
Do you think Mani's a bit pissed off by any chance?
Uh oh Freebass - 9th Sept 2010 - Band Update Posted on Thursday, 9 September 2010 News :: Freebass-9th-sept-2010-band-update :: Freebass Its A Beautiful life Album Cover Freebass – (and so we face...) The Final Curtain It is with great sadness that just prior to the long awaited album release of “It’s A Beautiful Life” we have to announce that the much anticipated Mancunian union of bassists, Freebass, is no longer a functioning group. Recent events have made Freebass entirely unviable as a band, and with this in mind, it has been decided that the project should be shelved, rather than placed on hiatus while members pursue their other interests. The band would like to take the opportunity to thanks friends and fans for their support and interest, especially on the UK tour in June 2010. We also hope that people will enjoy the album, which concludes five years of work and treat it on its own merits. No third parties were involved or harmed in the break up.
Hmmm... anybody know what the gossip is?
From the face of the nut.
I know. I was just being facetious!! Friday morning hysteria
-
Ou7shined has already hinted at a way to find out - measure from the nut. Since the scale length is 34" (assuming it's not a short scale Fender) the distance from the nut to where the 12th fret should be is 17". If the Fender system is like my unlined fretless basses you should find that it's exactly between the 2 dots.
I'm sure you're right, but where is the point on the nut you measure from??
-
Conclusion... nobody actually knows I can feel an email to Fender coming on. I did the sensible thing and compared it very carefully with a fretted Precision. I'm inclined towards right down the middle but it's quite hard to tell. Some careful measurement would probably be the next thing...
-
It depends on what you want a bass for. If you play in a rock band and want to sound like a Fender Precision then it's probably an eight hundred quid Fender Precision. If you want to do fancy noodly stuff up the dusty end you might want something much more exotic. Without wanting to sound all grumpy... it's the same as the "who is the best bass player" question. Best at what?
-
I've got a "notoriously poor" late 70s precision and it's very good - honestly. Well, that's if you ignore the shoddy paint job and it being a bit on the heavy side The sound is like nothing else though. I still wouldn't pay much more than you get a new one for, though. That's just mental, it's still only a bass.
I think it has been said before but the best advice for fretless is to use your ears & not your eyes, easier said than done to start with but perseverence is very rewarding when it finaly comes together, mike .
Well that's it. By the time you get to the 12th fret, rocking your finger slightly makes a semitone of a difference. At the moment the higher up fret position dots are miles out which just makes it even more difficult than it is anyway.
