I'm sure this book is very good, but you'll never develop your ear if you don't use it.
Honestly, I try to do both. I learn tons of stuff by ear to, as you say, develop my ear. I also learn stuff from the dots to improve my reading (which is important to me). There's not a huge amount of notated music specifically for the bass guitar so I quite like to have it around. Call me old fashioned etc.... I learned Substitute (for example) by ear and then compared it with the transcription. I had made some mistakes which, on a second listen, where my mistake (not one in the transcription). Surely that will improve my ear too? It's a minefield
I'm sorry if I came across as a bit of a tw*t but I've got GAS and I need the money to cure it! Thanks again for the help guys, Phil
Not at all... I've had a few close shaves with eBay over the years and your rights are your rights. I think people are often far too wishy washy. My view when dealing with such matters is polite > nasty > solicitors. If you see what I mean

Transcription Wanted: I Predict a Riot
thepurpleblob replied to Sean's topic in Theory and Technique
There's some cool phrases in there and I wanted to get them right as I think they're a bit muddy in the mix for me. So, do I prepare for funny looks, then?
You'll be alright if your guitarist actually listens to it. The guitar and bass are playing the same riffs in places and it matters. -
Do yourself, your bass playing and your band a favour and invest £19.99 on Stuart Clayton's John Entwhistle transcriptions http://www.basslinepublishing.com/tab/the-...-bass-book.html. I briefly joined a covers band who were doing three or four Who numbers and, despite being good at picking out a bass part, there's no way I would have picked out all of the nuances of JE's lines, even on a track as seemingly simple as Substitute. I'd always wanted to be able to play 'The Real Me', so it was great to see not only really accurate transcription, but for both versions also. Seriously, purely as a bass improvement manual, this book is outstanding, if you're into the Who, it's a must. Chris
Book now on order and wee plug for Stuart Clayton. Nice guy and very helpful indeed. Had some bother with the ordering process and he (personally it seems) sorted it really quickly and to my financial benefit.

Transcription Wanted: I Predict a Riot
thepurpleblob replied to Sean's topic in Theory and Technique
I've played this is three different covers bands and every one makes an arse of it. There's actually some subtlety in the song with the high up bass part in the verse but everybody just bashes through it at max volume. I get funny looks if I play the recorded version. -
It would probably help to see the ebay page concerned. However, this is simple. IF the seller is a trader you have 7 days to return the item (I expect that this means tell the seller that you wish to return it but this seems a vague point). Return is at YOUR expense but they must refund the original posting. They can't charge a restocking fee. As far as I know Ebay is not recognised in the UK (for legal purposes) as being an auction (like if you bought a sideboard down the local furniture auction) so whether it was BIN, an Ebay Auction or something else is irrelevant. If you did this and they didn't play ball then you make a formal complaint to the office of fair trading. If you didn't then tough. If they are not a trader then tough. ....unless anybody knows different. As usual.

Buzz from the E String on a Fretless Bass
thepurpleblob replied to Jacob Kobryn's topic in Repairs and Technical
I put some new Rotowound strings on my fretless bass (squire vintage modified jazz) a few days ago. They sound, feel, and look EXCELLENT... but there is one problem, that I was hoping you could help me with. On the E string, it keeps rattling, instead of a nice clean tone. It is only the E that I have this problem for. I thought it may have been hitting the fretboard near the headstock, but it continues to rattle even on the mid\higher frets as well. It could perhaps be a problem with the string pot (I think it's called?) or the bridge. Either way, do you know how I could fix it? Thank you, Jake
Your bass almost certainly just needs a proper set up. If you have changed strings it's always a possibility that the neck truss rod needs a bit of a tweak. There's tons of online resources for how to do it (Google will know). This assumes it is a "rattle". There's a remote chance it could be a worn nut but that's more of a higher pitched buzz. Certainly start with the basic set-up to eliminate that. -
I had to learn this for an audition a few months back. Struggled a bit, but once nailed it was great fun. The tabs I found for it at the time were far from accurate though, so I just kept on listening to it over and over. I think one of the tab sites was bass masta or something like that.
Well, that's tabs for you
record and live versions differ, so there's plenty of ways to have fun with this one T
Yeh - the original is quite simple. As time went by more notes seem to get added
-
Never mind.... Having had a proper listen I think I'm close enough. Not 100% on the verse notes. Some Gs, As, Bs and Ds most likely

what was the first number you gigged on a bass ?
thepurpleblob replied to essexbasscat's topic in General Discussion
The first gig I ever played on bass was a charity thing at the now demolished Cascade Pub in Wishaw, Scotland. I don't remember what came first but we played the eclectic mix of Queen's Crazy Little Thing Called Love, Cockney Rebel's Make Me Smile, Pearl Jam's Better Man. Oddly, I didn't make a single mistake (having practiced like a mad thing) - a feat I have never repeated again. This was about 8 years ago at the tender age of 38! Playing a Yamaha TRB-4ii into a GK 400RB and a Harke something-or-other cab. -
Does anybody have, or know the whereabouts of, a decent transcription of The Who's Substitute? Trying to save myself from some wooly 60s recording ear training
what just a normal "dyson" type vac out?
Anything with a fan drags dust right through. That's pretty much what you get with a so-called 'service'. A conventional vac with a soft brush used carefully will be fine (if there's something loose to suck up then you have worse problems!). I'm not too familiar with Trace stuff (even though I've got one) but you might be lucky enough to find that replacing the fan involves four screws and a plug on the circuit board (if it needs replaced).
-
when I turned it on, there seemed to be a funny rattling sound from the fan, but after the soundcheck (and I do play quite loudly) it seemed to be gone and amp worked (fan intact/working) any thoughs? do I need to worry? have I inadverantly"shook" the problem better? is that possible? anyone know? thanks chaps.
The fan is a mechanical thing and can (and eventually will) fail. Sometimes they can just be packed with dust and it might be worth a quick going over with the vacuum cleaner. If in doubt, get it replaced as an efficient fan is rather important!
Hello everyone, I bought an Aggie AG500SC a month or so ago (used). After about a week it's went into what's called "Thermal/DC Mode" which is basically a protection mode. I've been in touch with Aguilar and have tried everything they've suggested but nothing has worked. The nearest place to me that sells Aguilar gear is Guitar Guitar in Newcastle, i've rang them but they don't have an engineer there that can have a look at the amp for me. I've since took it into a recommended tech in Darlington but he said he can't do anything withing a wiring diagram. I've been back in touch with Aguilar asking for one of these but as this tech isn't a trading company as such, they won't be able to supply him with one (which is fair enough). Does anyone know anyone around the north east where I might be able to take my poor amp in to get looked at/repaired? I feel like i'm constantly banging my head against a brick wall and it's getting me down a bit. Thanks everyone. Kev
Mauritron (who I have used and can recommend) claim to have the manual if you don't mind paying - http://www.mauritron.com/ I'd give them a ring just to make sure though. I'm definitely getting back into the amp repair business
No, sadly, its a bad one, my Mums partner was a massive Rangers fan and he passed away in March this year. the club have been really kind, and they are letting us scatter his ashes at the "blue gates" do you know where that is btw ,munk? I take it its the main gate? It will be a sh*tty day all round, so I wanted to do sommat nice for someone on the way up if you get me. ah well...
I'm not even a football fan, but you won't miss it when you get there. It's just off the M8 Motorway, junction 20-something.

Do you consider yourself a BASSIST or a MUSICIAN?
thepurpleblob replied to xilddx's topic in General Discussion
One battle at a time... most people don't know the difference between a bass and a guitar. If they recognise that I'm not just a second-rate guitarist I am impressed. -
Capacitors, ceramic or poly?
thepurpleblob replied to Dom in Dorset's topic in Repairs and Technical
Just to return to the OP's question. Probably no difference at all. You have to keep it in perspective - the tone control on a Fender bass is the most basic thing known to man - a simple first order resistor-capacitor filter. The thing is inherently a bit useless to start with so the type of cap is going to make very little difference. I'm not sure why they bothered. I would just do without it and use the (almost certainly) much more useful eq on your preamp. Similarly you can't hear the difference between different types of pot. It's just a resistor. If you can hear a difference then one is broken and needs replaced. BTW... the length of the cable you use to plug a passive bass into the amp probably makes more difference as that introduces an unknown amount of capacitance itself which modifies the signal somewhat. -
thats what my old band used to do, scooter rallies etc, been into scooter since i was a kid, but the scene is getting really boring at the moment, all the bands are covering the same songs, do something different, get the obscure album tracks in there, oh and dont forget to get some rolling stones stuff in there
I'm depressed already Nevermind, it's different stuff for me. The Stones are definitely on the cards.... even though I can't stand them personally -

I'll bluff something as usual. Currently picking my way through some Small Faces stuff - those old low-fi recording make it interesting! -
Sounds like good fun - don't forget the Kinks!
Yeh - good point -
Off to jam with some guys on Sunday night who I have been talking to on and off for a couple of years but only now have got it together. They're all card-carrying Mods so it's all The Who, The Faces, Stones, Jam... that kind of stuff. Plenty to keep me busy then? They reckon there's a space in the market for that sort of stuff. I must admit that I've not seen a similar covers band around here. So that could go either way. As usual... thoughts and experiences??
I like to look at it like this... I know I'll always be a Status player at the end of the day, so any other bass I try is entirely optional. I've always broken even overall on trades/buys/sells, so there's no harm in a bit of GAS and trying something new. The interesting thing is that I've met loads of great people in my BC travels & that you always know there's a good network of help behind you. What's the harm? Once you've found your nirvana, a bit of trading and speculating here and there does no harm at all.
Mmmm..... need to try a Status bass.......
