Has your bass playing ever gotten you...
thepurpleblob replied to teen t-shirt's topic in General Discussion
Only abuse and mockery. The band I used to play in had a much younger front man. He got all sorts of attention but mostly of the skanky women asking for sex in the band van variety. That *never* happened to me, even when I wasn't old and fat. Possibly, just as well. -
It sounds as though your amp is not designed for a 16ohm load. At best you will suffer a significant loss in power. At worst there won't be enough current through the output stage and it'll distort in some fashion. It wouldn't be me. Also, your initial assumption that adding another cab will improve the sound is on shaky ground. Your amp is running flat out into 4ohms. Even forgetting the impedance issues, getting more cabs (hence more speakers) will still give you the same power but split between more speakers. It isn't neccessarily going to sound better and could easily be worse.

Why don't more sellers of basses include sound clips

I have no idea what I would play. I don't know any solo stuff. I'd just embarrass myself -
Carlsbro Bass Cobra 90W Combo Issue...
thepurpleblob replied to theosd's topic in Repairs and Technical
Repairs are actually like that. I used to run a repair business fixing car audio equipment for the motor trade. We tried to avoid the public - "can you just fix this - it's got a wire off / loose connection / etc.". We'd seen all the common faults in everything and a reply like "nope, it's the pair of BC578/579 surface-mount transistors buried underneath the board" elicited a range of blank expressions Now I've got a workshop behind my house I keep thinking about setting up doing audio repairs again. You become an avid collector of circuit diagrams and index cards with notes on !! -
Carlsbro Bass Cobra 90W Combo Issue...
thepurpleblob replied to theosd's topic in Repairs and Technical
At the risk of being facetious - it's broken. Take it to somewhere that repairs amps. It could be almost anything. The actual speaker, followed by the output transistors are a good place to start but the fault could be anywhere in the circuit. Without the proper test equipment you have no chance. -
Whenever they won't tune / intonate whatever. I don't really like the sound of brand new strings but I find the deciding factor is when they become reluctant to responding to the tuners. Either that, or when the neck becomes so filthy I have to take them off to clean it. I've never actually worked out how often that means I change the strings.

I played that song for years. I hate it too much (can't stand Rod's voice, sorry) to listen to more than the first 30 seconds. Just a matter of getting a few of the basic riffs and playing them over the chords. It more than does the job. The funny thing is that the song doesn't really seem to need that mad bass line - it was always an interesting extra. It's caused mountains of debate on bass forums over the years if nothing else EDIT: Just had a listen to a few Youtube vids of Rod doing it live and none of the bass lines follow the original, although crazed riffy-ness does seem to be the order of the day!

I think you are all overthinking it. It's just fatigue. Speakers are mechanical things that move. Like all mechanical things that move they will break someday. The rubber bit around the outside is under the greatest strain and is a very likely failure point. Speakers breaking in pairs seems quite common - fwiw, my theory is that they don't go together, you only notice when the second one goes. There are places that can repair or replace bust speaker cones. Not sure if it will be worth it. Here's the first one off Google (for example) - http://www.djequipmentrepairman.co.uk/speaker/. There's a very good guy near me that does this that I can actually recommend (Magnum Sound in Wishaw, Scotland)

Pots are boring things - they make scratchy noises when you turn the knob or break altogether. That's your lot. It's something else!

Pitfalls of setting the band up as a business??
thepurpleblob replied to Jamesemt's topic in General Discussion
Just for the record I tried your website in Chrome, Safari and Firefox on a Mac and non worked (the links didn't work). Looks a bit like a saved HTML Word page or similar. That's not suitable for a public web page. -
It's not the power rating that determines how much power is disspiated. The circuit configuration will determine that and, yes, you can calculate this if you know the relevant figures. My point was that there would be no harm using a higher-rated resistor than necessary and it might be mechanically advantageous. Say the circuit design was such that the resistor would dissipate 1 watt, then it would do no harm to use, for example, a 25W resistor - it would still only dissipate 1 watt and it might be able to do so without requiring an additional heatsink (you'd need to do the thermal calcs to be sure), but it would be physically larger and probably have good mechanical mountings as per the link in Alien's post.
Yes... I see what you mean now. A certain amount of power will result in the same amount of heat dissipation regardless of the (maximum) power rating of the resistor. However, a dirty great big one will fins and stuff will dissipate that more easily, yes. I've never used piezo tweeters and don't know the gory details but it does sound as though the power dissipation of the series resistor is not a big deal anyway.

You need to read the spec sheet for the piezos you are using for a start. Some have quite fancy protection built in and don't need a series (or parallel resistor or even a capacitor) some do. You can't guess this bit or bad things might happen. Somebody said the higher the power rating the less need for a heatsink. I think you'll find that the opposite is true. You can work out a rough guess at the power dissipated by the resister using Ohm's Law but it all goes as heat and if it's a lot you might need a heat sink. This is an interesting read if you have a few minutes... http://www.partsexpress.com/pdf/piezo.pdf

The point here is probably "little" generator out the back. Generators are a complete nightmare. If you really want to be worried, go and read about earthing and generators - you may not even have been completely safe. Amps and stuff don't take that much power but it adds up. We've all run the whole band off a single 13A plug but that can supply 13x240 = 3,120 Watts. A typical 2.5KVA generator will only supply about 2,200 Watts - a good bit less than a single socket can supply. And, they are rarely specced to run at full power continuously. If you overload it, the voltage is going to drop and beyond a certain point your amp is going to get unhappy. EDIT: For critical applications, generators are available with voltage regulation. I suspect they didn't have one of those.

It's not clear to me if the band is your day job or your hobby (or some point between the two). To be blunt, I can't see what good your rattle/pram moment could possibly do. My bitter experience is that even when you feel on the short end of the deal that being the big man, smiling nicely, and saying good luck is likely to bring long term benefits. They obviously wanted to go anyway. They wanted your blessing not your permission.

I was just going to add that if you are selling something make absolutely sure have *cleared* funds before you ship. Cheques, for example, take ages to get past the point where the bank won't take the money back. The money being credited to your account means nothing. There's some quite ingenious stolen cheque scams doing the rounds. The classic is the old, "I need this item very quickly, I will send you twice the amount it's worth, when you get my cheque please write another cheque to my shipping agents". Needless to say, your cheque will clear and theirs will bounce. I would also suggest that any kind of "over the wire" payment system where there is absolutely no paper trail is to be avoided. If in the slightest doubt, ask your bank and get the name of the person (at the bank) you spoke to. Regarding the EvilBay. I would go so far to suggest that you don't deal in a greater amount than you can afford to loose. My experience is that eBay and PayPal don't give a stuff if you get ripped off.
Your not too far away from Camden town. It might be worth checking the pubs and clubs for some live music in that area, especially if you are going to the Gallery. If you have tight speedos, a very unhealthy tan and look buff then you could spend a few hours stretched out on the slab over on Hampstead Heath. No need to swim unless its to make a quick getaway lol.
I don't know what's wrong with you all. I'm clearly going to stay well away from Hampstead Heath

I know this has been covered before in various guises but this time I'll listen. I'm stuck in London for a couple of days next week and was hoping to visit a couple of decent shops for a rake around. Where's worth a visit and/or who is friendly? Also, I'm staying in a hotel in Hampstead somewhere on Monday night. Anybody know of any pubs or similar with live music that might be worth a try on Monday? Cheers... and thanks for sorting my social life BTW. I'm in Bournemouth the rest of the week. What about there?? Ok, never mind!
