I bought this a few months back. It's a brilliant bass but doesn't suit my requirements as well as I'd hoped. It's probably a great bass for recording and for all that funky stuff but lacks the wall-shaking growl I need for the kind of eighth-note live pub-rock I play. I want to spill people's drink when I play a low D The bass is absolutely as-new, is strung with Elixirs and comes in its original case. Specs... Body: walnut Top: Rosewood Neck: Maple (3 piece) Fretboard: rosewood Bridge: Hipshot style A Machines: Gotoh Pickups: OW Preamp: OW 3 band Weight: 9.5 pounds (according to my bathroom scales) So... I'm looking for something a whole lot more "down to earth". Something like a nice MM5, a Lakland (the MM+J one especially), Sadowsky, Yamaha NE / TRB 5p, try me!! It pretty much must be 5 string, not crazy narrow string spacing and be of similar value. Some cash adjustment is possible but not much from my end. Would very much prefer not to get into posting but am prepared to travel. So.... not fussy at all. I hope this comes over how I mean it but it's a point were you should immediately acquire some self-respect. As others have pointed out, a lot of young bands will jump through hoops to play anything, anywhere. Don't do it. For a start, as a rule I would never lend equipment. What happens if one of the other bands breaks the drum kit. Is she insured, who will pay?

Did anyone on here win the Overwater comp?
It certainly wasn't me. I couldn't win an argument these days.
What makes you think you couldn't? Eh? Eh? -
Nothing that impressive, tpb. I use Transcribe and Sibelius. I have long since heard phrases rather than single notes so, as long as I have a starting point (usually the previous transcribed note), I can put together increasingly long passages using the computer keyboard alone rather than a bass.
I've got Sibelius but need to spend some time with it. It's actually got quite a steep learning curve. I'm at the screaming at the monitor stage at the moment!
Transcribing I usually do without a bass or guitar so its academic.
Kindly expand on that... how do you know if you're right then. Your ear must be several orders of magnitude better than mine
Never sitting - I don't gig sat down, so I don't practice sat down either (on the very odd occasions that I do, I find it hard going as the bass is significantly higher up & I find it quite uncomfortable).
I've tried standing but I'm a 2-band-covers-guy and a lot of my time is spent picking over songs. In reality I'm spending as much time with the computer keyboard fiddling with Transcribe! My sitting and standing bass height is much the same but I know what you mean - it's easy to hunch over sitting ending up with your nose against the frets

This is probably the weirdest thing I have asked yet.... I have never really found a satisfactory way to sit and practice the bass. I've never found a seat or stool that is quite right, for example. I usually sit in front of the computer so I can use iTunes to listen to stuff I'm learning. Both the computer and my bass connect to a Line6 Pod and I plug headphones into that but then I get tangled in the cables. I also have some wireless 'phones but they have insane amounts of compression and are not ideal. I suffer from back trouble and sitting hunched up for ages is a bad plan all by itself! So, what I'm asking is have you found the perfect way to sit in the house and practice... even if it's just the perfect thing to sit on?

Maybe something terrible happened......

I'm sure we've had this conversation before. I'm a kinda quiet guy and the BEST THING I EVER DID was play in a live band in dodgy pubs that I would never have gone into previously. So you're shitting yourself.... some things you just have to do and you'll not look back. Trust me

Power Chord/Alternate string technique advise
You should be able to release your thumb from the back of the neck and still be able to play the notes.
I've heard this a number of times before and either I'm missing the point or it's a bit of an exaggeration. Put a bass on a strap, keep your thumb out of the way and fret a string. Can you do it without simply pushing the bass around your back? I certainly can't. Your thumb has to apply some pressure, it's just a case of minimising it. Just (!) - I have a habit of working up a death-like grip too. -
Alanis Morrisette - You Oughta Know
thepurpleblob replied to thepurpleblob's topic in Theory and Technique
Thanks for everybody's help. Now I have had a bit more time to reflect it doesn't seem so bad. Just learn a few of the fills and mix them around. There's nothing there I can't play (hopefully). -
Listen to the kick, and tap along with it...
Give in.... sounds fine to me
Surely a player has the capability of being more precise on a fretless instrument as they are not impeded by the tempered tuning of a fretted instrument?
Although theoretically true........ ok, I'll just stop right there

....but from what I've been reading PayPal seems to apply quite a wide definition of "risky"

There's quite a measured article about it here..... http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/1...ing.html?cat=15 ....although it's all over the web complaining about it.

This is nuts. From your point of view, I would never give positive feedback until I have got the goods. From the sellers point of view, I would never release the goods until the money is in my bank account. Stalemate. Ebay is going right down the toilet
bear in mind that a cheque can bounce ages after it has been declared "cleared" (I'm sure you had no intention of actually banking a cheque, but just so you know)
Yes... exactly my point. Ultimately it's very scummy of the banks... "your cheque has cleared. Oh, changed our minds... your problem!!" These scammers are relying on people not knowing this, of course.

I've been with my wife for a lot longer than I've been a gigging musician. If it really came down to the wire my gear would be up for sale. Simple as that. I honestly can't imagine a situation where it would come to that, though. She actually likes coming to gigs... although working shifts (a train driver for goodness sake) she doesn't often make it.
Except he is (hardly) slapping! More a feat of memory than particularly difficult if you are going to play Flea's part note for note.... http://www.bassmasta.net/a/alanis_morissette/133456.html
Yeh - now I know who it all suddenly makes sense. Try and be funky with F#m7 and (almost) nothing else -
Just on the off chance..... has anybody got a transcription of the above. Cheers!! EDIT: Oh hang on... it's that slap nonsense. That's why I can't play it. EDIT EDIT: Bloody hell... it's Flea!! Everybody knew that except me, didn't they??

Yeh.... I was selling a car recently and I got all this nonsense about sending me a cheque for 5 grand over the price and then I had to make a bank transfer to the shipping agents. I'm like fine... but you do know I'll be waiting until the bank had told me the cheque has completely cleared. Never heard from them again... funnily enough.
