2. UPDATE... Looks like the Yamaha is going to a new home in exchange for a Japanese Precision of all things. G&L still around. Interested in *anything*. In particular a decent head or lightweight combo as I have no backup and that worries me
 3.
Yeah That was a bit of a ping moment for me too Grab it, Rabbit So what venues? Pubs or functions?
Remains to be seen... probably pubs leading to functions. I think we have 5 songs rehearsed to date. No worries... another 5 next week :-) I'm now in two bands.... I'm not sure how that happened....
 4.
Glasglowsticks
Oddly - I quite like that
 5. I'm shocked how sick most of you are Well, ok, not really!!

 7.
Plug Ugly
I knew this would happen http://www.pluguglies.info/
 8. New band project - new dilemma. We need a name. Covers band, female singer and four blokes. Song list is in flux but think Duffy, Paloma Faith, Amy Winehouse, No Doubt, The Gossip etc. ..and probably the usual suspect "cheesy's" too. Please save me having to expend any effort... suggestions, general advice and theft all much appreciated
 9. I wonder where all the Fenders and MMs built in the 60s (not MM, obviously) and 70s have gone? Has somebody been using them for firewood?
 10.
could you explain that a bit more? ta.
If you stick a meter over a battery that isn't connected to anything then it isn't doing any "work". The voltage you read then floats up well above the voltage printed on the side. It depends on the type of battery but around 10% will do as a guide. So if you test a 9V battery and it reads 9.0V then it's as flat as a pancake. It should read more like 9.7 or so. You have to be careful with digital meters as they have an incredibly high input resistance. They don't exist in the circuit you connect them to effectively. This is usually what you want but you do have to bear it in mind.
 11. I was going to say. You can get a cheapo multimeter out of B&Q or Maplins for a fiver. As long as you are aware that an off-load battery should show well over it's nominal voltage. That is a 9V battery actually reading 9V is flat
 12.
i cant see the logic of the old vs new musicman prices. people are selling old musicman basses, some from early 90's. just as much or even more than you can buy a new one for? someone explain this to me?
There isn't an explanation. Have you seen the price of 1960s Fender Jazzes?? I'm quite sure that some people will swear blind that they sound better or have some other intrinsic value. I guess it's just cool to have a pre-CBS Fender, a Pre-Ernie Ball MM, a pre-Gibson-suing-you whatever.....
 13. Call me old fashioned.... but it *really* upsets me that you have to pay extra to insure against THEM f*cking up. Here's a parcel, please deliver it without breaking it or one of your scumbag employees stealing it..... or I will sue your ass

 15.
Yeah perhaps, to be honest i was trying out my guitar amp through the bass speaker with my bass last night, see if we even need a guitar player. The thing i would say about what you said before is that i'm always being told to wait. The fact that i have to wait for everything, wait to be in a half decent band, wait to have sex, wait another year before i can do university etc... all of my friends are living their best years whilst i sit here doing crappy a levels and watching the most boring daytime tv shows, with woe and depression stabbing me like a knife up my arse. What the hell does it even matter? I suppose it's not long until i'm some incontinent old man anyway.
I like you - you're even more f*cked up than me Unfortunately most of these things you are waiting for aren't all that they're cracked up to be. Never be afraid to have some fun. You'll have plenty of years as an incontinent old man to regret it if you don't.
 16. I was in a band where the drummer constantly told penis jokes. It was funny for about 5 minutes but after 6 months I just wanted to kill him. It wasn't going to last. Nobody's perfect - especially musicians. Being a musician should be a recognised mental disorder. It is tricky because it's a constant inner battle between self-belief and your actual ability. I usually start by telling prospective fellow band players I'm completely sh*t so that anything I do to exceed their expectations is a bonus
 17.
Hi, For Sale YAMAHA BB605 5 string bass, black, with padded gig bag included. Now I got this off a freind to try out 5 strings and now funds dictate I need to move on a bass as I have 4 string fretted and fretless. It is a very well made bass and is well respected and gets good reveiws. It is nice to play and is a good way to try 5 strings or as a quality back up. I'm not technically minded but apparantly it has very good electronics (Nathan East NE1 parametric eq) just google it and have a read. The neck is beautifull and true and it sounds very nice. Condition wise it has been gigged (not by me) a few times so the back has a little buckle rash and the gold hardware is not as shiny as it probably was when new but there are no chips or dents on it, a good workhorse instrument! I'm probably making it sound worse than it actually is but i like to be honest about stuff i'm selling. These basses usually go for about £250 but i'm seelling mine for £200 inc free posting in the UK. OR I will do a deal with a ROLAND CUBE 100 bass amp combo. pm me if interested
It actually isn't an NE1 eq (there's no midrange frequency adjustment) - that was only on the very expensive BB-NE bass and the little silver NE1 box. Some of the Yamaha advertising was wrong. Having said that it does have a very useful three-band active EQ and the build quality is incredible. This is stupid cheap for 200 quid. I used to have one and can really recommend it. Good luck with the sale!
 18.
Just had a thought, am I going to get stung on import duty for a Sadowsky Vintage Tone Control unit I just bought directly from them? It's only tiny yes, but cost over $100.
Forget about the import duty, it's nothing. It's the VAT and the various handling charges (made by the importer) for putting it through customs you need to watch out for. Make sure you ask your (potential) carrier what the damage will be!!
 19.
Another +1. There's a wide range of possible 5(+) string spacings and neck profiles, and these can feel anything from easy/slick/comfortable to hard/cumbersome/awkward depending on your personal hand & body size and technique. Don't be swayed by brand names, every bass is different, try before you buy.
Yet another +1. There's loads more variation in 5 string basses than there is in 4 strings. I favor the variety that have the same spacing as a four string (which tend to be more expensive of course). Other players like the 5 strings crammed into the same width as 4 and everything in between. Other than that, I think the place to start is to just play as if it was a 4 string using the B only as thumb rest. Get used to the feel and the extra string being there. Go from there!
 20. I'm a recent convert to Paloma Faith who, IMHO, is one of the best female singers I've heard in ages. There's some quite cool bass lines in there courtesy of one Andrea Goldsworthy. Anybody know anything about her?? As usual evidence...
 21. A Saturday evening bump. Yet more interest but nobody yet said "I'll have 'em" so still available. Trades only please - what you got?
 22. Just to be clear.. it's the cherry-burst *fretless* that's still available, yes?
 23. I'm quite a philosophical person I suppose and I tend to take deaths like this in the same way. The big names like Elvis, Lennon even Michael Jackson although all sad meant very little to me personally. But I suppose I've been more affected by people whose music has made a difference to me. Certainly Joe Strummer was a shock because I had never seen him live - and always intended to of course. As someone else said, I am in the happy position of most of my musical idols still being with us. At least Joe got a railway loco named after him
 24.
cheers for the advice! I think i may save up for longer and bag myself a stinger! Although depends how much longer i can cope with this rubbish Washburn im using at the moment!
All worth a punt/grovel..... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=stingray http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=stingray http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=...amp;hl=stingray etc. There's at least one SUB for well under your budget too.
