Well, to be honest, i think you're being a bunch of knobs about this. I'm not 'gay' or 'Crap', I certainly know my way around a fingerboard, and i'm pretty sure i'm a decent enough bassist to be able to adapt a bassline if the singer wants to change key. I chose to do a tune of ours with a capo on the fifth fret, i then stopped using the capo and just went up a string (it was just another item to forget when packing the van). It didn't really sound the same, the capo seemed to deaden he strings off a bit. So i used a capo for the time that tune stayed in the set. I've also used it for chordal pieces before, I actually covered a Richard Bona thing for my Music A Level , type 'Richard Bona - Jools Holland' into youtube, he uses a capo, so he's obviously 'gay'.... Just as a closing thought, who makes these 'rules' up, i'm sure the bass guitar is still a relatively new instrument, so while it's a bit of a 'cheat', i don't see how it's 'wrong', that just strikes me as a blinkered set of views. I'd love it if the bassist playing with Kasabian at the minute (he's their third in 2 years) is some Berklee educated jazz supremo, and he's following orders for a paycheque.
In my defense I was simply surprised. I like Kasabian and I think the bass lines are good. I'd literally never seen a bass player use a capo before and I've no recollection of seeing it discussed. And, my (now changed) remark was entirely in jest if a little ill judged perhaps.
bass on all kasabian stuff is quite basic(songs ive tried anyway) no need for a capo, just needs to be quicker changing notes or learn his scales and fretboard
Yeh - I'm trying to remember which song is what but it was mostly the flurry of notes that screwed me up. That must be his dirty little secret I kinda hope the guy isn't on this board now though EDIT Evidence:
Not sure I'd use the word 'gay', but I can't really see the point in it. It makes sense on a guitar as you are playing the same chord shapes but in a different key, but that doesn't really apply to the bass in the same way?
I use it entirely in the pejorative sense, not to disrespect any minority groups (except, perhaps, those who use a capo or hairbands on their bass) The only thing I can think of is when you have one of those blasts through a scale (or similar) with an open string between every note. Then someone says "let's take the key up a step" and you can't play it any more!!

Golden rule..... if it all goes tits up, no matter how badly, smile and take a deep breath. Never be the other w****r!! Your next (proper) booking could be sitting in the audience thinking what a d*ck you are!! Also be very wary of people who don't normally organise live music. On more than one occasion I've turned up to gigs to find another bands gear set up and the organiser giving it "oh, we just thought you would borrow their gear". Errr... did you discuss that with them? No, of course you didn't. Then of course it's *our* problem to fix the mess. Grrrr...... I know what you mean but got to keep smiling!!
Well, the way I look at this is this: if it sounds ok, then it probably is ok. I seem to remember the brothers Wooten using girlies hair bands on their respective Bass and Guitar when slapping on the 1998 Bass Day DVD. :-)
Quite so... there's quite a bit of Kasabian stuff that's beyond me so what do I know

Don't you just hate those people.... "I wasn't sure if I was interested in playing bass so I bought a Zon"!! Good.... one more bass player is one less geetard

Yeh - happy hogmanay from an English B*****d whose been living in Scotland for twenty-something years. I intend to spend the evening practicing some songs and then getting an early-ish night. Sigh!!

I bet you know lots of theory. You just don't know you know. It can be quite hard sometimes spotting the tonal centre of a song - especially if it isn't the first chord and even more so if it's jazzy stuff like Becker and Fagan trip out. I wouldn't feel embarrassed; there's quite a few songs I play where I wouldn't swear to knowing what key it was. I've studied the theory I have done for the most part because I think it's interesting. It's also bailed me out a few times when my crappy ear has failed me.
I actually do not think the shipping has anything to do with it.. The price is the price! Shipping is something we all have to face losing. I'm actually looking for a Skjold or a Nordstrand they are fantastic which is why I looked at this in the first place. Ok maybe I should have kept my mouth shut, but that's not me - never will be.
I totally disagree with you - and it's usually me chinning people for being 'at it'. We all know stuff is generally cheaper in the States but that is somewhat offset by the shipping and other import charges. What it costs you is what it cost you. If he'd bought it from a dealer in Spain they would have had to pay those charges and have added it onto the price. In which case, I assume, you wouldn't have said a thing? It's fair enough to call people when they have been blatantly untruthful, but I don't see that here. Sorry! Lovely bass by the way.... good luck with the sale -
I've tried this before with no takers, but that doesn't stop me I have two basses that I don't use. Both are great and I have, genuinely, no hesitation in recommending either but I use my Overwater and StingRay all the time and I'd like to get some space back. Especially as I am moving house in a few weeks so I'm clearing out. I'm incredibly open to offers. I'd much rather trade than sell so, in an ideal world, both going together for something else would suit me best. Four or Five string (not 6), lightweight combos, whatever... surprise me!! UPDATE: Just the G&L left. I quite like this so I might keep it but could be persuaded for something that sparks my interest. A decent head is definitely on the maybe list as I don't have a backup currently. I'm not really up for posting but I get a good deal on the trains so we can work something out I'm sure! Ok.. G&L. Excellent condition but not mint. A bit of staining on the neck and the odd hardly noticeable scratch. If I didn't have fancier stuff, I'd happily have this as my only bass. Comes in a good quality gig bag. [s]Yamaha TRB4ii. My first proper bass. Way undervalued instruments. I have gigged this to death and just can't make it look scruffy or tired at all. Again, just shy of mint but you wouldn't be disappointed. Proper Yamaha hard case in tasteful brown.[/s] Now TRADED but for the blah-de-blah Thanks!
4 speakers 16 ohms...interesting....wonder how its wired...or if it uses 4 ohm speakers ?
The only thing I have seen like this actually had 16 ohm speakers. You had two 8 ohm (paralell) "stereo" channels or a single 16ohm (series, parallel), switchable. Wonder if this is the same? EDIT: Of course, 4 16ohm speakers in parallel gives you 4ohms, but the cab will only ever be 120W power handling which isn't a great deal of use for bass. The Marshall head would cook it.
You dont know who Rory is???????? Shame on you. There is a saying in Dublin, "First there was Jesus, then there was Rory" The reason I was asking about the band was a couple of months ago I was looking for something to keep me busy and I e mailed a girl called Emily and there seemed to be a guitarsit on board who played with a Rory tribute band. I think his name was/is Phil. It never went any further than e mails but they seemed like decent people. I wish you all the best and mind and give me a shout when you are gigging and I will come down and give you pelters, I mean support. Jez
Bingo.... the very same!! I haven't met the famous Phil yet, actually. You must excuse me.... I'm originally from Yorkshire. So, even though I've lived in Scotland for 25 years, I'm not Scottish and by extension I don't wish I was Irish. Let the abuse begin -
Sounds like your Carlsbro is a guitar cab if it's only 120 watts. You'll be ok driving it with the Ashdown because you'll only be putting about 90 watts into it, but the Marshall is a different matter. You could well blow something. How about getting a smaller extension speaker for the Ashdown? Doh! If it's 16ohms you won't be getting 90 watts out of the Ashdown
Agree completely... that's a guitar cab. That's always going to be a problem. If you're spending money then better get a proper cab IMHO (or sell everything and start again)
Hi all, I am currently using a Carlsbro 4x12 cab and an Ashdown EB180 115 combo on top, conected together. This works well and I'v got a great sound, but I don't want to cart around the Ashdown combo as well when we start gigging. I want to DI straight into the mixer and am looking for a head to cut down on space/weight. I'm thinking of the Marshall MB450H head, my mates got one and says it's good. I don't understand Watts and ohms and what means what!! My Carlsbro vintage 4x12 says 120 watts, 16 ohms. Is this good or bad, and will a 450watt head sound ace with this cab. Thanks in advance, Hitchy.
That amp is rated at 450W into 2 ohms, which is the equivalent of a rusty nail over the outputs. It's rated at 300W into 4 ohms and dunno what into 8 or 16. 16ohms is a really weird rating. It was probably designed to be used as two 16 ohm cabinets which together (in parallel) give 8. It would probably work and the amp would **probably** not blow it up but that's only because it would be massively down on power. It's going to be a bit tricky to do anything with a 16ohm cab frankly. Dunno if any of this helps. I can go into (lots) more detail if you want.
Blobdude! Was that the ad in gumtree? If it was, is it the guy who plays guitar in the Rory Gallacher tribute band and does the singer`s name begin with E? Jez
Yes, don't know, yes..... However, for the avoidance of confusion, I spoke to two people who had posted ads in GumTree and one is a female E.... and the other was a male E.... The one I went to was the female one. So what do you know that I don't??? EDIT: Actually, I keep hearing about these Rory Gallacher tributes for some reason and TBH, I haven't got a clue who the guy is or was. -
A similar thing happened to me about 7 years ago. A bass playing friend reccomended me to dep for him without telling me. I got a call from the band leader telling me when the gig was. I asked what tunes they played and was told all the standards. I asked if we would have a practice beofrehand, he said no I would be fine. We played for 3 hours, I spent all night playing tunes I'd never heard before! Never got called back.
I've probably told this story before but I did an audition under similar circumstances. I now dread the words, "don't worry, they're all standards". In fact that's guaranteed to make me refuse the audition/gig. It transpires that one person's "standards" are another's deeply obscure, mysterious, complicated songs. I spent that audition with the guys incredulous that I'd never even heard of *any* of their songs followed them "trying to help" by doing some mysterious tic-tac hand-signals that (I'm told) are supposed to show the chords. Sigh!
