<cough> <splutter> Thirty freakin' years! Seriously, I've been trying to learn this technique since I first picked up a bass in my mid teens, and absolutely cannot do it. I don't mean I'm not very good. I mean I just can't do it. At all. To the OP: Maybe it's just not for you, mate. There are some things that some people simply can't do. If you're anything like me, you absolutely will not accept this! Keep trying! Good luck!
Yeh - I can't play with a pick! I've tried everything and I just can't keep hold of the damn things. I'll give the slap thing a fair crack. These instructional DVDs have a lot to answer for. It's all "just do this", when what they actually mean is "you'll have to spend weeks getting the slap action down and I don't even want to mention the stuff I'm doing with my right hand to damp the other strings" Then...... you can move from the E string to the A string.....
can you do a video of you playing? the only thing I can think of (but i'm no slapper ) is that your slapping the string over a harmonic, or maybe not hitting the string cleanly and damping the fundamental?
I'm definitely not hitting the string cleanly It's probably all it is.... just need to keep at it until I start to bleed or Ed gets thrown out of the window!

I rashly decided that I'd like to have a crack at slap bass. Got Ed Friedland's DVD and noted his complicated left hand muting that he doesn't even mention... anyway... I'm really stuck... when I slap an open string it's rubbish 50/50 if I hit the string/fresh air/next string/the cat but it sounds like the note. However, when I fret and slap I don't get the fundamental I get the octave up. Weird. Ever time... *ping* the octave higher than the note I play. What the hell am I doing wrong??

Single cut bass guitars are the Devil's spawn
I think a thunderbird can accurately be described as a singlecut. Although the comfort, sound and balance may not be to everyones taste, I do believe anyone who says a thunderbird is ugly clearly has no taste.
A Thundebird isn't ugly...... it's just *silly* The postmodern bass! -

70s Jazz Bass - long term itch, short-term quandary
thepurpleblob replied to Born 2B Mild's topic in Bass Guitars
I have a late 70s Precision and despite all the nasty things you hear about late 70s instruments the sound is incredible. Unfortunately it's a fretless and I'm totally useless on the fretless which is a bit depressing. Also, the paint application was obviously sub-standard as it is beginning to crack and lift. If you have find a good one for a grand or so I think you could have a great instrument. -
Oh god, not this topic again, it's almost on the level of plectrum vs fingers for the opinions and amount of time it crops up.
Fingers obviously -
There's no way their rrp would be a realistic price for a 2nd hand Evolution that's the new price (and there's recently been a price hike methinks) so is misleading. I'd say a little pricey but not outrageous. Peter
So..... £950 - £995 and I could sleep at night? Overwater only lists the Evolution is "enquire for prices" unfortunately.

This caught my eye.... Absolute Music It's certainly very pretty (IMO) but is that a good deal? Is the Evolution a good bass... most people I have known speak very highly of them.
heh heh!! I chuckled out aloud! Tell ya what though, if the singlecut is contoured nicely, after a 2 hour gig, you do notice how much more comfy it is not to have an upper horn digging in to ya chest. <<<<<<<<<
I don't have that problem. The bass sits nicely on my fat gut !! -
There seems to be an increasing popularity in this business of failing the cut the upper bout properly. You people who play these monstrosities; what where you thinking? Burn it and buy a Squier Precision. You know I talk sense. This clearly eats babies... Much as I like Shuker, this should have been quietly killed at birth...

Probably in the order in which they get used... Stingray - USA G&L Tribute - Indonesia Precision - USA Yamaha TRB - Japan So USA wins, I guess.... dude... etc.

+1 My current band got lumbered with me via gumtree. It's totally useless for selling stuff though.
my bad im liking the planet waves lead idea!
Mmm... that's like saying "I've got a nasty toothache so I'm liking the handfulls of co-codamol idea". I would fix the actual problem. You'll not be happy when the jack gives up altogether in the middle of a gig!
-
I wonder.... is it just a strange coincidence that they make Fender copies and their logo could - just at a glance of course -possibly be mistaken for Fender's. Hmmmmm....

You've got an *input* jack on your bass.... Oooh... what does it do?
Ok so a quick update on this, basically I've just gotten an endorsement deal with new guitar company called Farida Guitars. They're distributed by Dawson's and are bloody wonderful bits of wood! I
See.... they've had their money's worth out of you already

That's one bit of me that hasn't been painfull playing the bass. Strap length? Stress/tension?
Thanks guys! I was looking at all sorts...Fender USA and various USA cab makes. Despite it being more expensive here, I will just go for the normal UK route. What I keep thinking is, when the economy recovers, what will happen?! I very much doubt they will lower prices over here...I imagine they will just keep it as it is! Anyway, Ill have a look at UK prices now.
Ahhh... your view of international finance may be slightly lacking. Buying stuff in the UK has always been dear *because* the supply change managed to ignore the current exchange rate! Dollar = Pound is pretty much the starting point. Back in the good old days when there was 2 dollars to the pound something costing $1000 (in the USA) and £1000 (in the UK) could be had for 500 quid plus the costs and taxes. You might have thought it *should* have been 500 quid (UK price) in the first place

To be blunt, if there's one thing you don't do that would be to f*** with someone's wedding plans. The bride will hound you to your grave I don't want to make a bad situation worse but two months is no time at all to book another band. Certainly round my way, the good wedding bands are booked years in advance. By trying to be helpful you've probably done a bad thing. Pull out, grovel, learn valuable lesson!

I've done it. It was to get something that didn't exist in this country (a TRB4p of all things - which I didn't like, but that's another story) so it's hard to judge if I got a good deal. One thing that I screwed up was the carriage costs. You (or I did) get charged at both ends for various fees, taxes and handling charges. Above and beyond VAT, which you will pay, the import duty is the least of your worries. Make sure you find out what you are going to charged for transport and delivery, end to end!!
Being a huge Talk Talk fan I obviously hate the No Doubt version! For me the playing on the original is far superior. In any case have fun with it, it's great bass line.
I forgot... the original is fretless too! The pitching was nearly as bad as mine which gives it a bit of charm IMHO!

At the risk of stating the obvious, you'd need to get the piezo bridge, a new preamp (unless you're lucky and it's a separate bit) and a new control panel and knobs etc. I'd be surprised if you couldn't get the parts. The distributer is "Strings and Things". I've found them to be helpful in the past. At what cost is another matter. Probably cheaper to punt your bass and get the one you want.
