How do people feel about modern university education
thepurpleblob replied to ironside1966's topic in General Discussion
I think there's a general point here (I work in a "proper" University). The whole higher education thing has been diluted by successive Government's desires to get everybody possible off the dole queue and into some sort of education. The trouble is that everybody and his dog now has a degree of some sort. I would suggest that in the good old days some of these music courses would never have got a degree designation at all. I'm not being snobby about degree courses but I actually miss the old tech colleges that taught you an honest profession - *properly*. Now everybody has to be an academic. There's loads more graduates than there are graduate jobs and you're just going to get your hopes raised and then end up working in Asda. Meanwhile, as usual, the people with talent, determination, bullshit and being in the right place at the right time continue to get the good gigs. -
Coming soon.... "I hate the Stereophonics"
Or for an alternate view.....They're great. Put one on my Wal years ago and love it for the ability to quickly drop down and back up even when you are playing. Always comes back in tune within a few cents, and setting the drop only takes me a few back & forth checks. I always leave it switched down in the case to prevent the thumb wheel that sets the drop getting knocked in transit.
Maybe I'm being useless but (having followed the instructions to the letter) I find them irritating. You effectively can't tune your E string quickly between songs. As, inevitably, flicking the detuner up and down results in a sharp E-string. If you have time to fiddle you *can* get it spot on but it's no use for those "oh cr*p, I'm out of tune moments".

Also remember that the inherent low impedance of a passive bass has its issues. For example, the length of cable you plug is will make a difference to the sound (due to the capacitance of the cable) as will the input circuit of your amp. None of this will be a feature of active instruments. In some circumstances this might matter to you.
I was wondering why bass players like either passive or active basses.. Two very different basses i own are a Lakland 55-01 with a Glock pre and Nordies and the other is a 62 RI,... i love the Lakland, its got such an amazing punchy powerfull tone, with a lovely hifi tone to it, but on the other hand the 62 has this raw Jazz growl with nothing but its wood and pick ups i suppose.. Im not i can decide what sounds better? What does every one prefer...Active or Passive??
It's just a 'thing'... your sound starts at you and ends up at the listeners. Everything in between effects it. I don't think isolating one feature makes a great deal of sense. I think it somewhat depends on your style. I leave my bass eq flat (on actives) and up 'full' on passives and fiddle with the amp eq. I see some players who are mucking around with the bass controls between every song... for them the additional versatility of an active eq may well be relevant.

My objection is pure prejudice... we cover Basket Case and American Idiot. I hate those songs... I know absolutely nothing about them except everything I've heard sounds dreadful. I seem to remember they covered "The Saints are Coming" which was just rude!! I think this is my repost to the current thread about songs that are easy and you like to play - this is about songs that are easy that I hate to play You can add "I Fought the Law" to that list and, before you say anything, I'm a big Clash fan. Nasty bass line on that though.

Hurray... it's not just me

There.... I've said it!!! Let's play root notes really, really fast.... oh good.
How good are the hipshot detuners for this?
They're sh*t but slightly better than not having them. Whatever their website says, it's very tricky to get the E string to stay in tune and the adjustment for the 'drop' is way too fine. I still use one though. I would maintain that drop-D is not the same thing as playing a 5 string. I play some songs in drop-D on a four string and some using low-D on a five string. Quite different.

So what do you drive to transport your bass gear around?
Never done any drifting for yonks. I miss those days, 3.6 rover SD1 powering around roundabouts is a joy in itself. Even the 730 BMW was a hoot. Always thought silver X5's was for mums doing the school runs & black ones are for drug dealers & pimps. Do they make any other colours?
Mine's blue. I'm so ashamed. -
Ah, that's ok then. Actually, it's not just southerners, have you ever been to Wilmslow? I was deriding a ML63 AMG with personalised number plate when I was last in that vicinity and then realised it was a close family friend driving it. And he also has a TVR Griffith 500 so that makes him ok in any car nut's book! Alex
Yeh - I have a good friend who used to live on the Wirral so I know all about it. Actually he had a TVR as well but just one of those unreliable 80's wedge ones! -
Which one of you is it that charges past on the M25 at 90 mph in the rain talking on the phone? Alex
That's *southerner* BMW drivers you're thinking about. We're in Scotland - it's different. It's for the mud, snow and the dogs in the back. Ok... it'll be the wife of course -

I've got a BMW X5. My wife has a BMW X3 which actually has more room inside. They also have consecutive number plates - I'm so embarrassed (it was her not me - honest). The rest of the band gear goes in an old tranny van that smells of fish. -
FOCUS.....Yes!.. those dutch chaps!/Prog Night Out!
thepurpleblob replied to MB1's topic in General Discussion
Saw Jan Akkerman at the Edinburgh festival last year. It was bloody awful but, to be fair, it was mostly because the sound man obviously was in need of a damn good kicking Other than that... Focus - great band. Used to listen to them a lot back in my student days (which was not yesterday) -
Out of my depth and in need of help and encouragement

You did one better than me... you went. I would rather put pointy sticks in my eyes than go to something like that stone cold. I can guarantee I would make a bigger fool of myself It's inconceivable to me to get up and play a song without having practised it 100 times first. So I'm jealous that you had the balls..... no idea if this helps!! -
A Message to You Rudy - nice, slow and repetitive for as long as the band feel like playing - a real breather in the middle of a frenetic ska set
It's funny... we play Gangsters and that song gets me every time. I've never got through it without making a mistake. It's a style I don't normally play and that makes it a challenge.

Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall (part 2). Glorious drop D rumble. Oasis - Cigarettes & Alcohol - I don't much like Oasis, but I'll make an exception for this.
