1.
PM Sent
All yours. PM me your address and I'll post them off on Monday.
2. I had Peter Allen setup my Ric with roundwounds, picked it up and remembered why I hate roundwounds! I've seen sense and put a set of TIs on there, so I have these vile zingy finger-hurters sitting here doing nothing. If anyone wants them, let me know and I'll post them off on Monday. They are cut for a Ric but will also fit a P bass.
3.
Status hotwire flats have a medium compliance feel, and sound great. Not a bad price either.
Massive thanks for recommending Status Hotwires. I just stuck a set (40-100) in the Shuker P, and they are fabulous! Perfect tension - not too low like TIs, but not as high as some flats I've tried, and they sound great! Really liking them right now!
4. Should also say that I might well trade (with £££ from me) for a Lakland (all models but not DJ jazz) / Gibson Thunderbird / something else 4 string & passive.
5. Bought this from Bass Direct at Christmas, used it for a week (and loved the presets), and then put it in a cupboard where it's been gathering dust ever since. I should learn (after owning and selling half a dozen effects units over the years) that I never use effects live. Anyway, it's immaculate, and comes with the manual and mains adaptor. Not sure where Mrs Tredders has 'tidied' the box to, so assume it'll be in a non-original box. This pretty much does everything; from limiter/compressor, through distortion, delay, flanger, chorus, looping etc. I even found a rather entertaining patch that made my bass sound like the Clangers, which is essential in my book.... If you need any info on the unit, everything you need is here: - http://www.bossus.com/products/gt-10b/ Excuse the stock photo, but it's dark (and late). I can obviously provide photos of the actual unit if needed, but rest assured it looks just like the one below. It's a pretty big unit, so postage will be expensive. Price wise, these are fetching close to £300 on eBay. I paid £250 for it, so let's say [s]£220 £210[/s] now £200 collected or £215 posted. Collection will be from j.12 M40 Warwick/Leamington/Solihull corridor. See next post down for potential trades. Any questions, ask away.
6. Thanks for the replies. Both the Status Hotwires & the GHS Pressurewounds sound good, so I've ordered both and will compare the two. Will post my ramblings when they arrive and I've had the chance to play with them both.
7. (Sorry if this is in the wrong section) I'm looking for some new strings for my Shuker P bass (details in my sig). I generally have TI flats on my P basses, and love them, but for some reason the low tension doesn't work well with the Shuker. In the past I've tried La Bellas and they were too thick for me (like playing telephone cables!), and also Chromes (which were ok but nothing more). Basically, I'm looking for flats that are lower tension than rounds, but not as low tension as Ti's. I've never tried half rounds - maybe they're an option? Any help would be appreciated! Cheers!
8. That's lovely. I miss my old BG. Do you still have the original pick guard?
9.
I keep drooling over the 1969 P bass on their site, the black 'roadworn' effort, stunning!
I played that a couple of weeks ago - it's really nice!
Don't bother inquiring about it though he'll tell you Fenders are crap and you should buy a Roscoe instead...
Haha! So true. Mark's been telling me for years to sell my 'Fender junk' and buy a decent bass!
10.
City Boy - 5705
When I was a young kid, our home phone number ended in 5705. Oh how we laughed as strangers would ring up in the middle of the night and sing the chorus down the phone to us. My folks actually changed the number after about 500 calls in a month!
Love Missile F1-11 is a fantastic piece of music.
My schoolmate Jim played bass on that song. Not that you can hear any bass on the track. My nomination for best one hit wonder..... Althea and Donna - Uptown Top Ranking. Great tune and a bass line even I can play... 11. Every Jazz bass I've ever owned has been like this for me. I've owned an AV62, couple of nice Japanese RI models, and (briefly) a JV one, and they all sounded woeful when I played them. I think I just don't like the sound that Jazz basses make!
12. Hmm, I'm off to the States with work in a couple of weeks...
13. These really are the best combo ever! I got hold of one recently, and it's the easiest combo in the world to get a great sound of. This one's a great price, too.
14.
I contacted him once. He seemed............odd. He basically told me that he would set it up, as he wanted it, not how I wanted it. He seemed to think that what everyone else did was wrong. Just my experience of him.
That is strange... He's always asked me exactly how I wanted my basses setup (and he's done a few for me!!), and has delivered. Doesn't sound like Peter at all - maybe he was having a bad day?
15. I've used Peter Allen for the last 10 years or so. He's always been consistently excellent. Website below - he's just outside Warwick, about 5 mins off the M40 Warwick turning. http://www.guitartechnicalservices.co.uk
16. Merry Christmas! Just been browsing the Amazon Boxing Day sale, and spotted this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0002CZU9C?ref_=gbps_img_s-3_3127_9fbc9148&smid=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE Epiphone EBTBVSBH1 Thunderbird Reverse for £190 with free delivery. Andertons and Dawsons etc have it at £270, so a decent saving...
17. Are you willing to split? Might be interested in the 2x10 as an extension to my Metro combo...
18.
I think I can make free shipping to EU
That's worth a lot to any potential buyer. I just traded my Bassman 135 (identical to this one), and they're pretty heavy amps. Sweet sounding and getting rarer, too.
19. I just picked up one of these, and it's a brilliant bit of kit. Built like a tank, and sweet sounding. Perfect for a luddite like me, as the manual initially says to set everything flat and just use the 'Enhance' control to dial in the sound you want. I've never had to do any more than that. Plenty loud enough, too - keeps up with a very loud drummer with ease!
20.
I've played that bass and thought it was unremarkable. Sorry.
By the same token, I'm sure plenty of people would pick up the CS P bass I didn't rate and love it too. One mans meat and all that. It's a good thing we don't all love the same things (the Jaco thread on here is proving that!!). I noticed that there was also a La Bella PJ hanging up in the shop, but I didn't get the chance to have a go on that. Looked nice though!
21. I had a Lakland BG previously and regretted selling it. I think the surprising thing for me was after playing a handful of basses in the £1000 - £2500 price range in the shop, it was the cheapest one that felt and sounded the best. The CS Relic didn't do a thing for me, and I dread to think what the RRP is on one of those now. You know I said that I really didn't need another bass... 😃
22. Popped into Bass Direct on the way home today, to pick up a new lead and guitar stand and tried out a couple of basses. There was a Custom Shop Relic Precision, which I found pretty ordinary - certainly not as good as I was expecting. There was a nice 2nd hand '69 P bass - very light, lovely fast neck. But the star of the show was a new Lakin Bob Glaub. Felt and sounded absolutely lovely, and looked great too - Cosmic blue with a matching headstock. It was pretty light and just felt right, and sounded like a proper P bass. I'm not in the market for a new bass at the moment (haha! how many times have we all said that?!) but if I was, I'd be spending a grand on one of those new Lakin basses instead of considerably more on a Fender. And that's from a dyed in the wool Fender player....
23.
JJ Burnell N W Roy Bruce Foxton Bruce Thomas Horace Panter

Graham Maby (Joe Jackson Band).
Came here to add my 6 names, and I've been beaten to it!
24. How about a Mustang reissue? Ticks a few of your boxes... It's Fender, cool, warm sounding, great for indie music, and within your budget.
25. I really enjoy mine (details in my signature) - lovely to have a bass built to my specs, and I was pleasantly surprised by the price too. Jon's a super guy to deal with, too.
