This is now on hold, pending funds. Thanks for all the interest. I keep doing this (a quick search will find all of the non-P basses I buy and then quickly sell).... I really should learn by now that I only like P basses, so here's one for the chopping block. It's a CIJ '62 Re-issue Jazz, in Coral Pink (at least I was told it was Coral pink, I can't tell the difference between Coral and Shell). The serial number dates it to 1997. Excuse the dust on the photos! The Good:

It's in immaculate condition - no dinks, scratches, rubs or whatever.
The neck is lovely - really fast.
It's a very cool colour
It's pretty light (between 9 - 9.5 lbs on my bathroom scales)
It sounds just like a Jazz bass should.
The Bad:

It sounds just like a Jazz bass should
Seriously, it's a really nice bass, but I only play P basses, and it's a shame to have this sitting in the rack not being played. I'm after £500, collected from j.12 M40 (Gaydon) or from my office in Solihull. Postage will be at cost. If it's posted, I have a tatty old hard case to protect it. If you collect it, I'll give you a nice softcase for it. Things I'd trade for:

CIJ P bass (maple neck only, preferably not sunburst)
Lakland Bob Glaub (maple only) or Duck Dunn
Gibson (not Epiphone) Thunderbird
Lightweight combo
Or pretty much anything else you might want to try me with!
Should also say that I don't mind adding cash for the right trade (whatever that might be!) Any questions, let me know. Tredders
your one looks great too tredders! def looks the part how does it compare to your '73?
They're quite different beasts - the '73 is strung with TI flats, and has a B profile neck, whereas the JV has rounds on it (Rotos, I think) and a more traditional P bass neck - wider but shallower than the '73. Have to say that I'm impressed with the JV - it feels very well put together, and sounds great.
was this the bass that was up for £850 and got suddenly price dropped to £500?! i would have definitely bought it if i'd seen the price drop sooner
Yes, it was. I was lucky enough to be at the front of the "I'll definitely take it" queue. Quick bank transfer to the seller's account, and it was mine. For once I was in the right place at the right time
Thanks, It is rather spectacular but thinking of moving it on now.
I don't need another P bass. I don't need another P bass. I don't need another P bass. I don't need another P bass. I don't need another P bass.

That's ace. Always loved that colour / pickguard / neck combinaton.

Cheers Gary. Nice bit of maple you've got there, too

This little beauty arrived today - 1982 JV Precision. It's my first JV Fender, so I wanted to know what all the fuss is about. The JV series of basses (and guitars) is well documented here: http://www.21frets.com/, and I've not been disappointed - it's a beauty. It's in very good condition, and it plays really well. As for the sound, well, it sounds just like a P bass should - rich and fat with the tone rolled off, and clanky and bright with the tone full on. Really nice smooth transaction with JimmySims, who put me in touch with a friend of his who was selling her (at a cracking price - I was first in a very long queue to buy it, apparently!). I'd originally planned to collect on Sunday morning (3.5 hour round trip from Warwickshire to London), but a buddy of mine was working down there today, and did the courier thing for me. Anyway, a few pics: - And here it is with my '73 P bass - quite a difference in sunbursts between the two: - Tredders
I'm still sticking to my view that £20 a year as a membership fee represents good value for all the fun and information available on here. If you see it that way, then the selling becomes free! £20 a year is less than 0.5p per day. How many of us are on here every day? Would you balk at a charge of 0.5p to log on?
That's how I look at it. I paid my £20 and then sold a (decent) combo for a bargain price of £100. I've not got anything else to sell on the horizon, but I figure £20 to be a reasonable sum for access to this place for a year...

Recommend me some bass/music realted autobiographies please
tredders replied to horrorshowbass's topic in General Discussion
Ska-d for Life - Horace Panter's autobiography is a cracking read (and very well written). -
There's a great piano / bass / vocals version on Joe Jackson's Summer In The City album. Graham Maby's bass playing is really nice on it.

I was afraid of comments like the above :-) Might have to start looking for one then. No way would I spend £3000 on a new one, though - that's proper vintage Fender money...

I've never owned (or played) a Fender CS shop bass, but being a dyed-in-the-wool Precision player, I've always been really interested in the Pino model (plus I've got a bit of a bonus coming from work, so I'm considering one). Ticks all the boxes for me, and every review I've read has been really positive. But how good are they? I know it's all subjective, but what makes them so great? Build quality? Attention to detail? Components? All of these? Any current / former owners out there care to comment? Cheers Tredders

That looks lovely - really good job

Not sure what to do with my bass, keep or trade, advice wanted!
tredders replied to MarkG3's topic in Bass Guitars
Sell it. I had a similar relationship with a '51 re-issue P bass. Always wanted one, finally got it, didn't like it, paid for a whole load of stuff to be done to it (genuine Telecaster pickup fitted, custom scratch plate made, had chrome ashtrays fitted, had it professionally setup, fitted with TI flats etc), and still it just didn't do anything for me. I ended up selling it (for a loss, of course!), but better that than having a bass I didn't get on with or enjoy playing. I would have thought you'd sell it pretty easily - you've done some nice mods to it. -
A, B etc, refer to the neck width at the nut. The 'V' is referencing the shape (or section profile), of the maple on the back of the neck. V profiles were common between early '56 and late '57 (They do appear outside of these dates though, but some have been shaped by the owners, and not factory), and are still considered the most comfortable necks to play, and highly sought after. Its shaped that way, to fit snuggly in the V of your hand between thumb and first finger, when its wrapped around the neck. My late '56 Precision has a strong pronounced 'V', and it is very easy on the hand. Hope this makes sense?? Rick
Ah, thanks Rick - makes sense. Just to make sure I understand, I'd better borrow your '56 Precision for a while. Purely for research purposes, you understand -
Pics when it's done or it didn't happen
Don't worry - I'll be showing it off when I get it back. Should arrive at the Bass Doc's tomorrow. Maybe I should go for black over the original sunburst finish, like the latest CS model

What's a 1955 Soft “V” neck profile like? I get a bit lost beyond A, B & C neck profiles... -
Some Telebass thoughts here http://basschat.co.u...ster%20telebass
Cheers Chris - it made interesting reading. Made me laugh to compare your experience with your bass with my thought processes over the last two weeks, summarised as: - 1. "Bloody hell, this bass makes the walls shake" 2. "But that's all it seems to be able to do" 3. "Should I get another pickup fitted? I'll leave it a week and see" 4. "I've ordered a new pickup" 5. "I've had the new pickup fitted. It's now brilliant" 6. "Fender Telecaster bass for sale" Hopefully, I'll avoid step 6! Anyway, thanks for everyones comments and suggestions. It is going to have the jazz pup removed. It is going to be resprayed faded white. Please all feel free to ridicule me if I ever say that I regret having the other pup removed....!

Anyway, you can keep your Be Bop Deluxe added-jazz-pickups. I've got Horace on my side: - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xar9j2RRJDE

You remember that thing you used to do as a kid? Where you'd stick your fingers in your ears, and say "la, la, la, I'm not listening" when someone was speaking to you? Well I'm actually doing that right now, with regard to the jazz pickup I've actually had the bass for a fortnight, have played it a lot in that time, and have tried to learn to love the jazz pup, but I genuinely don't. This bass will be purely for my Specials / ska / reggae thing, so all I need is the sound it gives me. Hence, returning it to original spec makes sense (to me at least!). Besides, this one will be a keeper - I've looked for one for long enough, so it's got to please me, rather than for me to think about future resale value. For the first time in years, I'm relatively GAS free... I mean, I'd still like a Pino. And a Jetglo Ric. And Clarky's pre-CBS P bass. Oh, and I wouldn't mind trying a Thunderbird. But apart from those, there's nothing I'm after. Well, I've been tempted by a Dingwall recently, if I'm honest. And I'd like a 70's CIJ P bass (with the slim neck). And a Lull Precision. And I've been wanting to try a Nash for years. But other than those, I'm sorted for the moment....
