1. I'm sure re: removing the Jazz pup. I know it's a one trick pony, but it's that exact trick I want it to do, so I don't really need it to be versatile. Anyway, I have a real aversion to the sound of jazz pups at the best of times...! As regards the colour, I'd love to leave it sunburst but to cover the filled-in jazz routing, the only real solution is to veneer the front of the bass and try to match the 'burst, or to get the whole bass resprayed and refinished from scratch, and that's time consuming and costly. Besides, I like that off white look :-)
2.
I didn't know Jack was a skilled luthier
Of course, I meant the Bass Doc. I've edited my original post accordingly. You'd think I could remember the name of the guy who's going to be working on the damned thing, wouldn't you?
3. So I've been after a Fender Telecaster bass for a while, and they've either been too expensive, or have come up at a time when I've had no bass funds. By luck, I found one on eBay - terrible small photos, basic description, but I contacted the seller, and arranged to meet up with him. Turns out he's the bass player with Marmalade, and was a really nice guy. Had a chat, coffee, and the net of it is that I came away with the bass (even better, for what I consider to be a damned good price too ). Now, it's been used, is genuinely 'road worn' but sounds amazing! That mudbucker is a beast! It's currently got a jazz pup fitted (so many from that era had this mod done, unfortunately), so I've been in contact with the Bass Doc, and he's going to get it back to stock for me. He suggested that a thin vaneer could be put on the front of the bass to hide the filled jazz pup routing, or the alternative would be to get the bass refinished and resprayed. I've gone for the latter approach, and have chosen that custard-colour off white that aged Fenders have. He's going to make a white pickguard for it, move the tugbar to the right position, and source me a bridge cover (hopefully with the foam still in place). So, on with the show. Here are some pics of the bass as it stands now: - I'll post some more pics once Howard has performed his magic on it (it's being delivered to him on Monday), but this is the kind of colour scheme / result I'm after: - Will update the thread in the coming weeks.
4. Just sold a combo to Mark (Bonzodog), and it was a very pleasant and smooth transaction. He came to my place, tried out the combo, had a coffee & a chat, and left me with a bundle of bank notes in exchange. Nice guy - very smooth sale. I'd happily deal with Mark again. Highly recommended! Tredders
5.
That there Shuker of yours is mighty fine looking.
Cheers - it is my favourite bass ever, and it actually sounds & plays better than it looks. I keep staring longingly at Shuker Jazz basses. Must resist.
6.
Lol you may get the BC Medal Of Honour for that
I'll hand that Medal Of Honour straight back, since I've just sold a combo for £90 that I took in a trade valued at £150 last week. Normal service has been resumed
7. I need to stop reading threads like this one. If I didn't already have constantly Shuker GAS, this would do it for me.
8. Just do what we all do - go out and buy some kit. Be really pleased with it for a month. Read Basschat, and discover some other make / model that you absolutely must have. Sell the stuff you just bought at a loss. Buy new stuff. Realise it's pretty much the same as the last stuff. Repeat ad nauseum. Seriously though, try some different stuff out if you can. The offer (earlier in the thread) of having a rig for a week to see if it suits you was a good (and generous) idea. It's like everything, if you ask 20 bassists what amp & cabs to get, you'll get 25 different answers
9. One of the (very) few singers that my 12 year daughter listens to, that I don't mind being on in the house! The Locked Out of Heaven bassline is a bit of a guilty pleasure, too....
10. Got this in a trade last week, and whilst it's a great combo, I don't need it right now and could do with the space. It's loud (220 watt 15" speaker), and feature packed: - twin channel (one clean, one distortion), built in tuner, sub-octaver effect, head phone socket, phono inputs etc etc. I'm told that this one has been sitting (unused) in a cupboard in a band manager's office for the last 2 years, and it certainly looks like it's had very little use. Very good condition, one small (around an inch) patch of the furry covering is showing through at the back. Other than that, it's pretty much immaculate. I had a play last night, and it seems like a nice combo - good range of sounds, useable EQ, and the tuner and built in distortion and octaver are nice toys. Review of it here: - http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/reviews/bass_amplifiers/crate/bt220/index.html And the manual can be found here: - http://www.crateamps...ls/BT220_OM.pdf P bass shown to give an idea of the size of the combo (24.5" x 24.5" x 16.5"). One thing I would say is that it's well built and pretty heavy - the manual says 87 lbs, and it feels like it when you're carrying it! It does have twin side handles, and also holes for castors, but I didn't get any castors with it when I bought it. If I was keeping it, I'd pop straight down to the local hardware store and invest £8 in 4 castors to save my old back, but you may be stronger / fitter / younger than me, so it may not be a problem. Anyway, this owes me £125 on the trade, so how does £100 sound? It'll need to be collected (either j.12 M40 near Gaydon, or from my office in Solihull). From a trade point of view - I'm pretty much open for anything, so try me with what you've got!
11.
So is there a downside? Yes, because of the super accurate reproduction there is no where to hide, if you have a lapse in technique, or make a mistake, it reproduces it will embarrassing accuracy.
That's exactly what I found with my old PJ rig. Absolutely loved the tone from it, but it did highlight my sloppy playing! Now I just go for dull, thumping, fat bass tones, and hide in the background
12.
This is it's bigger brother... but gives an idea of what they can go for. http://www.ebay.co.u...e#ht_2244wt_721
Bl**dy hell! For the first time in about 500 trades, I may have finally done well out of one!!!
13. Cheers for info... The model number (hand written on the back panel) is A250, so I'm guessing that designates that it's the 250 watt output model? Seems incredibly loud, if it's "only" 250 watts, though... Great sounding amp, and the 2 pre-defined pre-shapes are actually useable. Going to get it checked out by Peter Allen, and will then decide whether to keep this one or my OTB 500.... either one might end up for sale.
14. Luke, it's a preamp and amp - it has 2 outputs on the back for cabs (plus the usual send/receive effects loop & Tuner output). Specs are here, if you're interested: - http://www.dmaudio.co.uk/trace-elliot-ah350-smx-350w-hybrid-bass-head/ And Merton, you're absolutely right - it's an SMX
15.
oh right...well if its in GC then yeah its worth a bit more than say..a relic! its still worth a good 200 notes for sure. EQ bal knob? try this thread http://basschat.co.u...e-eliot-spares/
Cheers (and thanks also for not saying "you could have found this easily if you'd used the bloody search function" )
16. Cheers - it's amazingly versatile too, I'm discovering. That pic isn't my actual one - it's a pic I quickly found on the net. Mine is missing the EQ Balance knob - any ideas where to get a spare?
17. I took a couple of things as part of a trade this week. A Crate BT220 combo which I'll be listing for sale soon (sounds great, is full of features, but is bloody heavy, and I don't need another combo), and a Trace Elliot GP12 SMX Preamp. I've been trying the GP12 out, and it's fantastic! Solid state / valve blend, 12 band EQ, twin compressor, and it's LOUD, even when paired with just one Aguilar GS112. Same as the one shown in the pic below: - Thing is, I really have no idea what it's worth - it doesn't owe me too much from the trade, and I'll probably keep it, but I've seen various for sale posts on different forums, with drastically different asking prices. Anyone know what it would fetch if I did sell it? Cheers Tredders
18.
Depends on who you ask to do it Mark, but I would only be asking a very well-respected and experienced luthier to do that bass, the fingerboard finish is superb, and of course with a Ric, any problems with the neck resulting from poorly done work are problems you're stuck with! Interestingly I asked a well known luthier for a quote and he said he wouldn't be able to do it as neck through basses won't go into the rig he uses for working on necks. Chris
Cheers Chris. Probably not one of my better plans then. Looks an absolute beauty for the money though.
19.
Yes!
Booooooo!
20.
Is the Takemine still for sale?
Yes mate.
21. I traded my Jack Casady for Mike's CIJ Jazz, and couldn't be happier. Excellent bloke to deal with - we sorted out our own couriers, and when the Jazz came, it was packed so well, it took me about 20 minutes to get past the first 17 layers of bubble wrap! Bass is immaculate - even better than described, and Mike's just a really nice guy to deal with. Thanks mate!
