73 Precision rebuild (now with pics)
tredders replied to basshead56's topic in Repairs and Technical
I can't help you as to whether the 77 pickguard will fit, but I do have a 73 Precision (the sunburst one in my avatar), so if you need any details checking, or any photos sending through, give me a shout. -
Mark just bought my CIJ 62 Jazz, and we met up at Banbury station. Had a coffee and a chat for an hour, and all was good. Very easy sale, and Mark's a really nice guy. Cheers mate - enjoy the Jazz.
I've just been checking this bass out again, it is beautiful! How does she play now you've had a few weeks with her?
It's weird, but it feels worn in, like I've been playing it for years. It really is the perfect bass for me - it sounds exactly like I wanted it to, it plays just how I wanted it to (in truth, it actually plays better than I hoped), and it looks as cool as they come! I think the best compliment I can pay is that I wouldn't change a single thing on it - it's that good. I'm definitely going to get Jon to build me a Jazz next - his work is amazing.
That looks like a nice bass there Tredders. And I suspect those pickups have some grunt to them!
Thanks Lozz - I absolutely love it. The Delanos are really nice pups - they're a bit meatier than regular P bass pups. I'm hugely impressed with the P Retro, too. I usually hate active basses, but Jon was right - it still sounds like a P bass, only better!

I emailed them about 6 weeks ago, trying to find out whether I could backdate a subscription and pick up the back issues. I never got a reply. Have they gone bump then?

This is now sold to McKendrick, pending a meet up next week - thanks for all the interest. Just got this in a (very easy & painless) trade with Uke, and literally three days after, I was offered a US '62 Jazz Re-Issue for a really good price, so I'm putting the CIJ model up for sale or trade. I'm a sucker for stacked knobs (oo-er), and don't need both, so decided on keeping the US model.. It's a '97 CIJ model, sunburst and rosewood, and has a Badass bridge fitted. It's just (before I got it) been strung with a new set of Roto's and sounds and plays great. It's got a few battle scars (shown on photo - worst of which are on the lower body edge, detailed on last pic), but to be honest, there's nothing particularly noticeable, and the photos have been deliberately sharpened to show them up. It looks, sounds and plays exactly how a Jazz should. Not really much else to say on that score! Comes with the nice vintage-looking hard case you can see in the photos. Price wise, I need £450, plus your choice of postage. You're more than welcome to collect it from near j.12 M40 (between Leamington Spa and Banbury), or Solihull (where my office is). I'd also trade for a small lightweight combo / head & cab (Genz Benz, Phil Jones, EA or similar), Gibson Thunderbird or good quality electric acoustic or semi acoustic bass, with a cash adjustment either way. Cheers Mark.

Now that is very very nice.

Anyone know where to get a good setup around the Solihull area?
tredders replied to CBbass's topic in Repairs and Technical
Your best bet would be Peter Alan, who is on the Solihull side of the A46. http://www.guitartec...services.co.uk/
Agreed. I always get my basses setup by Peter - the man's a genius! -
That's lovely - great choice. I bought a CIJ 75 RI Jazz from John a couple of years ago - he's good guy.
That looks right
What he said. Perfect. -
Not sure if it helps, but I've got a couple of pics of early/mid 70's P basses. Don't know if you can glean anything from the pics, but they are in this thread: - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/94149-tredders-current-4/page__p__980549__hl__tredders__fromsearch__1#entry980549 Mark.
Nice one thanks Mark! I'm thinking about going for the PMVC 4 FE/M2 so it's good to hear that the similar pups sound good! But without taking the focus away from the thread, you have a lovely looking bass. What is the name of the blue?
I've had more of a play with the bass tonight, and the combination of the Delanos and P Retro is fantastic. Going from playing Specials tunes (bass boost, treble cut) to Green Day (typical trebley clanky P bass sound) to Jackson 5 stuff with a quick tweak of the controls. I'm not how much of it is down to the pups and how much of it is down to the P Retro, but it's an excellent pairing. I have no idea what the colour is called. By some coincidence (or fate!), I was after a light blue paint job, and it just so happened Jon had a Precision body in exactly the colour I was looking for. The black hardware was Jon's idea, and I think it looks great against the blue.
Lovely colour! I would be interested in hearing any sound clips of the delano pups if your able to do that? If not could you add any more info as to how they sound etc are they passive? Thanks!
The Delanos are passive, but the bass is fitted with a John East P Retro. Bit more info on the pups here: http://bit.ly/luCdV3 and the P Retro here: http://bit.ly/ywyPH1 If you're ever in the Warwick area, you're welcome to come and try it out for yourself and have a listen Cheers Mark.

New Bass Day for me - my Shuker P bass has just arrived. Details here for anyone interested: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/169068-nbd-shuker-precision-with-jazz-neck/

It's arrived! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/169068-nbd-shuker-precision-with-jazz-neck/

So, my first custom bass arrived today. I called Jon at the start of the new year to discuss a build for me, with some vague specs: 1. Traditional P bass body 2. Jazz neck 3. Blocks and binding on the neck 4. Cool colour (yes, I'm shallow, I know) After owning a Lakland Duck Dunn (which I never really got on with for some reason) I wanted a P bass with a Jazz neck to my specifications, and Jon talked me through the options. Luckily for me, Jon had a suitable body, and a selection of pups & hardware already available, so that cut the build time down dramatically, as he'd only have to make the neck for me. We had more in depth discussions, and Jon knew exactly what questions to ask me, in order to determine what I was really after. So, to cut a long story short, the courier arrived this morning with my new toy. Excuse the self indulgant photos, but I'm so happy with the bass it's untrue: - It looks absolutely stunning in the flesh - the pics don't really do it justice, and the black hardware is just perfect. The final spec is as follows: - Maple neck 34" scale 21 frets 2 way truss rod Carbon fibre reinforcement Quarter sawn Indian rosewood f/board Mother of pearl block markers White f/board binding Black 2mm side dots Satin neck lacquer 38.5mm nut width 21mm neck depth at 1st fret 22.5mm at 12th Medium fretwire Korina body Polyester basecoat Gloss blue polyurethane topcoat White s/plate Gotoh bridge Black hardware Delano PMVC pickup East P-retro circuit (rechargeable) As requested, Jon supplied it pre-strung with TI flats for me, and it is truely amazing. The neck is a dream - Jazz like, but thinner, and very very fast. The Delanos sound like a proper meaty P bass, with lots of low end, but modern sounding mids, and an almost Stingray-esque tone with the treble rolled up. I'd never used a P Retro before, but was reassured by Jon that it "still makes your bass sound like a Precision, but better", and I'd totally agree with that. The effect is quite subtle to my ears - you can shape the sound very simply using the stacked knob controls, but it never loses the inherent P bass sound, which is exactly what I wanted. Dealing with Jon couldn't have been easier. I had a couple of calls with him up front, then we exchanged a number of emails when discussing the spec, and then he sent me regular progress updates as it was being built. I ordered on the 4th January, and it arrived today, so that's 7 weeks. One of the things that surprised me most was the cost - Jon did me a great deal on this, and it cost me a hell of a lot less than I thought - certainly less than a couple of P basses I've bought in the past... Anyway, enough talking about it. I'm now off to play it! Mark.

So I've finally managed to plan a business trip to the Netherlands which allows me to take a couple of hours out and visit Paul's Bass Matters in Nijmegen. For those of you who don't know of the store, the link is: http://www.bassmatters.nl/en Exchanged a couple of emails with Paul himself, and he seems like a nice friendly bloke, so I'm looking forward to my visit. They've got some nice vintage stuff in there. Anyone been there before? Mark.

GK micro bass cabs - MBE115 200 /4 ohm - anyone tried?
tredders replied to nottswarwick's topic in Amps and Cabs
I had wondered about one of those in a bundle http://www.thomann.d...68aee02b52918c. The specs look pretty underwhelming max SPL: 91dB, frequency response: 51Hz - 18KHz but you never know until you try it!
That seems like a good deal for a reasonably small and lightweight rig. Be interesting to hear what it's like. -
Always nice to hear of things like this. That's the kind of thing that would actually make me want to buy their stuff in future.
