Here's the progress on the neck so far.... nice bit of Indian rosewood, eh?

I bought a Tech 21 VT bass pedal from James, and the deal went smoother than a smooth thing. Good price, quick postage and the pedal is immaculate. Cheers mate! Mark.

I just sold my Musicman Big Al to So, and it was a smooth painless process all along. He kept in contact throughout and payment was made instantly. Although he's in France, it was no different to shipping a bass to the next town. A good guy who I'd definitely deal with again. Mark

Having got well & truly stung by the custom build bug, I'm trying to raise a few quid for Shuker number 2! I've just today sold my Lakland Bob Glaub, and this is the other one I'd like to sell. It's a 2003 Fender 51 Re-Issue Precision, made in Japan. I got it from OldHorseMurphy on here, just 5 months ago, and then spent a fair old chunk of money getting it to where I wanted it: - 1. Managed to source an original 1971 Fender Telecaster pickup, overwound by the BassDoc. 2. Had a fret level & polish, and pickup installed 3. Had a new black pickguard made 4. Had a professional setup done 5. Had a new set of Chrome flats fitted. 6. Had a Wilkinson 2 saddle vintage repro saddle fitted. 7. Had the cavity copper shielded 8. Added genuine Fender bridge & pickup covers I swapped the pickup out, as the original one was quite weak. If you google, it's quite a common mod that owners of these basses make. I also swapped out the original Fender 2 saddle bridge, with a Wilkinson vintage bridge. The Fender 2 saddle bridges made the bass almost impossible to get in tune all the way up the neck, and the Wilkinson one retains the vintage look, whilst providing the required intonation. I'll include both the original Fender pickup and bridge in with the sale. All the above work was done by Peter Allen (http://www.guitartec...nal_Set-up.html). I always get my basses setup by Peter, and I'm sure that anyone who has bought one off me will testify to the quality of his work. I wanted the bass to sound and feel as good as a vintage bass, but have all the advantages of a modern one (i.e. a decent bridge instead of the appalling standard one!). It has 3 dinks on it, all of which were there when I bought it. There are 2 on the lower edge (by the jack socket), and one 'impression' (not through the paint) near the knobs, which you can only see if you hold it up to the light. I've taken pics of these. This sounds absolutely immense! If you've ever heard an early 70's Telecaster bass, you'll know how it sounds. Very fat, but surprisingly articulate too - it's not all just muddy bass. It's setup beautifully, with no buzzes or rattles anywhere on the fretboard (not that I ever go above the 7th fret!). It also looks the business, too. It came with a Fender soft case (I use the work 'case' advisedly - I think a bin liner would offer more protection), but I have a very old and very tatty case that this can be packed in if it needs to be posted. All in all, this owes me close to £850. Oh, and I know the bridge cover is back to front, before anyone tells me Any questions, let me know. Mark.
...it certainly is - and here's some more: maybe I'm deaf, but the pick-up in my current MIJ 51re-ish (Q003**) sounds way more musical than the dead meat in my old Telecaster Bass. Q's: which bit needed machining: the p/up or the body? What was the requirement for the new pickguard? Yours is a better colour than mine. I may be getting gas. Best open a window.
No disrespect, but are you interested in buying this? Or did you just feel the need to stop by and say that your stock pup sounds better than your Tele one? Genuinely happy that you think that, however the vast majority of owners think the stock pup is a bit weedy, and often swap them out. Please remember that this is a sale thread - not a general discussion. To answer the machining question, 1 or 2 mm's were machined out of the pup cavity. It would have fitted without this, but it would have been a tight squeeze, and I wanted a proper job doing. Regarding the pickguard, the old one was warped and I the guy who looks after my basses had another one, which was specifically fitted to this bass.
Nice! But can't imagine why the stock pickup needed replacing. Apart from the overwind, where's the advantage? Correct about the bridge cover. Looks dim that way, but did take the mute off the strings. No mute? Gotta be better the right way round...
Since you asked, the Tele pickup sounds infinitely better than the standard one, which is why I changed it. Pretty much everyone I know with one of these basses changes the stock pup, often to a SD Antiquity. I got the chance to buy the Tele pup and snapped it up. Sounds great now. And I'll ensure the mute the right way round before sending it to whoever buys it....
Very nice indeed! But [pedant] I think the bridge cover is the wrong way round [/pedant].
Apparently (and I'm sure someone better qualified than I can confirm / deny) the bridge cover was sometimes worn this way to prevent the foam mutes from hitting the strings. Not that these re-issue covers have mutes in, but there you go
Hi Mark The blue P bass with the block neck is my old bass I had Jon make for me. It currently resides with OBBM (yet another one of my regrets!)
I always said you had great taste in basses, which is why I bought your '51 P ;-) Only problem now is Jon is working on an orange Jazz, which I know is (1) going to look spectacular, and (2) I'm going to want!
Congrats dude! I really the colour of that purple... Hmmm
Cheers - can't wait! Just checked out your build diary - that purple looks wicked! Is yours ready yet?

After coming close to closing a couple of deals on basses for sale recently, I started thinking about what I'd really want out of a new bass, and came up with the following vague list of requirements: - Traditional P bass body in a 'different-but-not-too-wacky' colour Jazz neck (rosewood board with blocks) John East P-Retro The obvious solution would be a Lakland Duck Dunn with a retro-fitted P-Retro, but I'd previously owned a stock model, and didn't really get on with it (despite the fact I love my Bob Glaub), so that was out. I'd never really seriously thought about a custom build, since I thought they'd be too expensive, and also couldn't stomach the thought of waiting 6 months to get a new bass, but thought I'd look anyway, and dropped Jon Shuker a (fairly vague) email. I was pleasantly surprised to get a very prompt friendly reply from him, and today we've exchanged several emails about what I really want. He definitely knows what to ask in order to fathom out what you're really after - I guess that's part of the skill of a custom guitar builder. To cut a long story short, John sent me pics & detailed specs of a number of ready to go (or nearly finished) basses. One P bass was close to perfect - right weight, right pickups, right colour (very important!), and already had an East P-Retro in it. Only down side was the neck - it was a standard P bass, without blocks. One further email to Jon and after a "no problem - I can fit a Jazz neck with blocks to your exact dimensions" reply, my bass is ordered It'll look something like this (click for bigger pics): With this neck on: Best thing is, it'll be ready in a month! So today, has I've discovered: - 1. Jon Shuker is a really nice bloke, and knows how to work out what you want by asking the right questions. 2. Custom bass prices are nowhere near as high as I thought. Really. 3. The wait time (because I lucked out on a nearly-ready bass being close to what I wanted, I guess) is minimal Pictures will obviously follow when the bass arrives, but I'm very excited, and the drudge of going back to work tomorrow has been somewhat offset by ordering this! Mark.
