I think if I did have any criticism of my ric is that it might be 'over-finished' if that's not too much of an oxymoron. A few coats of paint less on the neck might make it a bit less sticky in a sweaty pub environment. Could just sand it down I guess. A roadie I once chatted with was convinced that it was really the amount of paint that went on the rics that gave them their unique tone. Think he was pulling my leg though I do know that whenever I take it to open jam sessions everyone wants to play it, they do seem to carry a mystique. One player was almost teary eyed when he gave it back to me as he'd been playing for years, always wanted to play a ric and never got chance so I'd fulfilled a little dream for him. As long as they look sensible I'm OK with others playing my ric these days though I was a bit protective in its early years. It passed through a few hands at the Nottm bash bass a few months back and genrally got a thumbs up...
Bloody hell - did you have to post that photo? I've been trying to put off buying a Jetglo, but seeing yours here has just caused me to start Googling for stockists....
I used to love Musical exchange, I could spend a day there, it always felt like they had a couple of hundred basses there but it was probably less. If you're driving down the M40 it wouldn't be a bad idea to pull off on the B452 at Ealing and pop into Peter Cooks Guitar world, they only have about 15 basses on display but have loads on theie stock list - they just fetch it for you from the warehouse, nice people and open to haggling. I always find Denmark st is a bit of a let down. Good luck
I spent many a Saturday in Musical Exchanges... I got my first bass from there (Westone Thunder 1, in 1984), my Jetglo 4001 (which stupidly I sold at the age of 17 to fund a holiday with my mates and have regretted ever since), my 70's Precision (sold here), and my first double bass. And you're absolutely right, it did seem like there were hundreds of basses you could just grab, sit down and have a play with. Happy days... Thanks for the heads-up re:Peter Cooks - just had a look on their website and that looks like the kind of place I'm looking for.

Thanks for all the replies. I think I might plan a visit to PMT (great name, whoever thought that would be a good idea? ) and Reverb over the next couple of weeks. However, sounds like it'll have to be Denmark Street to satisfy the mooching requirements, especially as it's only £18 on the train on a Saturday. Oh, and doctor_of_the_bass - 63 basses? 63 BASSES? That's not an interest, that's a disease

Hi all I feel the need to spend a day mooching round guitar shops, but haven't a clue what's on offer any more. In the old days, Musical Exchanges in Birmingham used to be a fantastic place to spend a day, full of loads of second hand kit, as well as brand new stuff. The Bass Centre was also just around the corner. However, I know they've both closed down (and changed hands several times), so I don't have a clue where to look these days. I've looked on t'internet, and can't find much in the way of help, so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions? Incidentally, I live about 45 mins from Birmingham, so it's probably not too much more of an effort to head to London on the train, and maybe look there, so any recommendations of good shops to check out in London would also be appreciated. I've never done the Denmark Street thing, so maybe that's an option? I'm not looking for anything in particular (although maybe a Jetglo Rickky if I see one!), but I'd like to find somewhere with a decent selection of 2nd hand stuff. Thanks for any suggestions.... Mark.
Don't be so sure!! Mwahahaha!! Lovely to meet you mate - seems we could have chatted all evening! Maybe I will sell the Epiphone and spend it on an AP Royal Oak Offshore from TZ!
Great to meet you, too. Next time, we'll make it the pub instead of Tescos cafe.... I hate to break this to you, but the only way you're going to get an AP Royal Oak via the Episphone is to put it through the window of your nearest high end jewellers! Hope this raises a few quid for BassChat (and equally, I hope it finally ends up in Tayste_2000's hands). Cheers Tredders
Thanks . . . I think its the contemporary that I should be contemplating ! . . . sounds like the better option ?
If you are interested in the Icon, I've got one that I bought back from the US on a business trip 2 months ago. It was one of those "blimey, that looks nice" moments in Guitar Center, which I regretted as soon as the credit card bill arrived! I paid extra for the fitted case too. Let me know if you're interested. Cheers Mark.
Thanks, I was after a free one in return for a review Tell you what, I could easily make 300 dollars worth of recommendations to make your website work better/sell more boxes/get you more gigs if you fancy an exchange See My Feedback Section for comments of that aspect of my life
I know Si and trust his judgement. I'd order one on the strength of him saying it's a decent bass. Mark.
You probably know the score - headless wooden Steinberger copy from some time ago. Two EMG inspired passive pups, Steinberger licenced bridge and string retainer .. This particular one was extensively customised by the Post Office Story here Offers? Please PM me for more painful images
I've seen basses sold in worse condition to that, with the description "real mojo"
I think that’s more of an American thing left over from the war. I never knew about it till I was there and said "Jap Strat" and everyone looked at me like I'd dropped the N-Bomb. It's not the same as Brit; it's more equivalent to the shortening of Pakistani, or I guess “Nip” short for Nippon. Personally, I aint offended by it, but the more you know…
Anyway, no offense intended by anyone on this thread, so maybe we should return to helping bubinga5 find a made in Japan (日本 Nihon or Nippon, officially 日本国 Nippon-koku or "Nihon-koku") bass. Mark.
I'm always a little uncomfortable with the word "Jap" - perhaps just exclusively using CIJ or MIJ or even "japanese" might be more appropriate?
It's a standard language abbreviation (like Eng for English, or ITA for Italian). Don't read something into it that's not there Mark.

I bought my Jap '75 Jazz from www.fareastguitars.co.uk, but looking on his site, it seems like he's struggling to get stock at the moment. I've also been looking here recently: www.mijfenders.com, and www.guitaremporium.co.uk always crops up a lot on here. Hope this helps Mark.
Absolutely. Luckily, I have a sister living in Michigan so the option of buying a bass and bringing it back (in a 'worn' case, of course ) is an option for me. If only my wife would agree to the plan. Just think, £500/600 for a new Stingray.....
Slightly off topic, but if you go out to Michigan, visit a place called The BoB (www.thebob.com) - it's awesome! Mark.
Tell him to look at interparcel.com, shipping to Italy should be about £37 (without extra insurance) using parceline.
What he said! I used Interparcel to send a bass (in a hardcase) from the UK to Portugal, and I think (from memory) it was £35-ish. You can book online, and they come and collect the parcel, and you get decent parcel tracking on their website too. Mark.

I went to the Guitar Center in Michigan a couple of months ago when I was out there on business, and they had a massive choice of basses. The prices were pretty much dollars for pounds, too (i.e. brand new Fender Jag for $700, Epiphone Thunderbird for $300, Stingrays for $999 etc). I found the people working in the store really cool - they didn't seem to be the usual 'hard sell' merchants, but of course, this could have just been that particular store. If you have time to spend a couple of hours trying out loads of different basses while you're there, then I'm sure you'll find something nice to bring back! Failing that, visit a music store in the UK and narrow your choices down a bit before you get out there. Oh, and don't forget to buy a nice battered flight case to go with your new purchase Wouldn't want anyone thinking you might be bringing a brand new bass back through customs, as that would attract interest from the excise people (Or Vat people. Or customs people. Whoever.) Mark.

Is there a bass line that you just couldnt do?
I've always been flabbergasted by Norman Watt Roy on "Hit Me With Your Rythmn Stick" Having seen the guys on youtube playing it, I can safely say that if I played till I was 100 years old I still couldn't play it!
What he said! Great bassline, which I will never be able to play! I'm always stunned (and slightly humbled) whenever I see Youtube clips of some of the guys on here playing. There's a lot of talent around here.... Mark. -

Has anyone got the tab to this guy's version? It's killing me trying to work it out......
