Does seem as though there was a short run on shallower necks in '71... Just been reading an interview with Mendel, and noticed the part below. Now I'm off to change the trades on my Variax for sale to include a Nate Mendel P bass ------------------------------- How did your Fender signature model come about? What's the history of the original? "I found this 71 Fender P-Bass back in the early 90s and I loved it. I discovered that it was this rare model that they'd made in 1971 with a different type of neck - it was like a thinner version of the P-Bass neck, perhaps a little bit closer to the Jazz Bass. I really liked it, it was super easy to play and it was just a great sounding bass and I played it on 10 years-worth of records."
The Nate Mendel Precision which is based on a 71 P is advertised as having a 'slim C' neck with a 41mm nut. It's noticeably shallower than the current modern C.....
Thanks! And thanks also to dood, who also mentioned this. Need to track down a Nate Mendel to try now...

Definitely not a Jazz neck - it felt much wider than my B profile neck, but narrower front to back... I am wondering if it's been professionally slimmed down now. Whether it's standard or has been altered, it's my new favourite neck profile! I'm going to have to pop back later in the week and take a tape measure and snaps some pics! I'll see if I can take some pics of his other basses too...

Horace from the Specials recently found and bought back his '71 P bass that he used to record Ghost Town on. Was round having a cuppa and a noodle on it earlier on. It has the most amazing thin (from front to back) neck, and it's just lovely to play. It's totally different to my '73 P bass neck, and much nicer. Yes, I have P bass envy! The point of this post is as follows: Mine has a B profile, and I assume that this one has a standard C neck (although that is just an assumption). I've played a few early 70's Precisions in my time, but can't remember one that had a neck quite as good as this one - standard P bass nut spacing, but thin from front to back, and quite flat.. Is this a standard profile for that era? The back of the neck was very worn, and H couldn't remember whether the neck had been reshaped, or just nicely worn from lots of playing. Can anyone who owns a late 60's / early 70's P bass with a C profile neck comment? If it's a standard profile, consider me on the lookout for one... Picture of said bass with said Mr Panter. It's got DiMarzio pups, brass bridge, brass nut, bronze coloured pick guard, and brass knobs. Oh, and it feels like it's been painted with a thick paint brush. But it sounds bloody great, and plays even better!

I'd been after a manual for my Steinberger Synapse bass for ages, and couldn't find one anywhere. Augusto saw my post, took the trouble to scan his copy as a PDF, and then sent me a message with the download link... Absolutely top man! Thanks again.

Now traded - thanks. I bought this from BassDirect last year, and haven't really used it, apart from an initial frenzy that lasted a week... It's in very good condition, has never left the house (let alone been gigged), and comes with the Boss power adapter and instruction book. I can't find the original box, so although I'll have a look in the loft, assume it comes in a plain box. There's a link here for an overview of functionality, and some video demos: - https://www.boss.inf...roducts/gt-10b/ £200 plus postage at cost (or collection from Warwickshire / Solihull). From a trade perspective, I've also got a Variax bass for sale (http://basschat.co.u...ing-pics-added/) so I'd be happy to bundle both together against something in my trade list in the Variax listing. Failing that, try me with what you've got. Any questions, just ask... Cheers!

Now traded - thanks for all the interest... I have an immaculate 2007 Line6 Variax 700 4 string bass for sale or trade. It's the sunburst model, and comes with all the original accessories (see below for full list of what's included). I bought it last year, and it's great fun - the modelling sounds are really good, and it's actually a nice bass to play. It's had some new strings put on, and the action is great. Obviously it works perfectly, and also comes with the battery harness (to enable you to play via AA or 9V batteries) as well as the mains adaptor for the foot pedal. Finally got around to taking a few snaps this afternoon. See below. Excuse the quality, but they're off my phone. Only mark I can see is on the back of the neck, and it's hardly noticeable, but I've highlighted it for completeness. As you can see from the first pic, it includes the bass, Line6 padded gig bag, Line6 DI box, Line6 power adapter, Line6 digital lead, manual, and a few extras (Planet waves cable, and a decent quality leather strap with locking strap nuts fitted (originals supplied). Emulates the following basses (wonder how much a complete collection of these would go for? ): -

1961 Fender® Jazz Bass®
1960 Fender® Jazz Bass® with flatwound strings
2004 Fender® Deluxe Jazz Bass®
Fretless 1961 Fender® Jazz Bass®
1963 Fender® Precision Bass®
1958 Fender® Precision Bass® with flatwound strings
1977 Music Man® Sting Ray®
2003 Modulus® Flea Bass
1971 Rickenbacker® 4001
1963 Rickenbacker® 4001 with flatwound strings
1966 Danelectro® Longhorn Bass
1963 Höfner® Model 500/1 with flatwound strings
1963 Gibson® Thunderbird 4
1966 Gibson® EB-2D with flatwound strings
2002 MTD® 535 35-inch scale
2003 Warwick® Thumb
1978 Alembic Long Scale
1984 Steinberger® XL2
1968 Hagström® H8
1994 Hamer® B12A
2003 Tacoma® Thunderchief
1949 Kay® M-1
Inspired by classic Moog MiniMoog bass sounds
Inspired by modern bass synth sounds
Good demo of the available sounds here: https://www.youtube....h?v=jgq9hlJysj8 Price for a sale would be now £450, plus shipping at cost (or collect/meet up in the Warwickshire / Solihull area). I'd be interested in a trade (with me adding £££ obviously) for one of the following: Nate Mendel P bass 4 string Stingray - preferably 2 eq Thunderbird Nash P bass American Vintage re-issue P bass (or some other nice P bass - Roadworn maybe?) Yamaha BB2000 Yamaha BB2024 / X Nice Lakland (esp. Decade) Or something I've not yet thought about but maybe interested in! Must be 4 string, and pref. passive, although that's not a deal breaker. I'm also a sucker for gadgets / Sonos kit / digital cameras / general audio equipment etc etc. I also have a Boss GT-10B for sale (http://basschat.co.u...ects-processor/), and would happily entertain trades for both of these against one of the above (plus any difference either way). Any questions, please ask!

Great guy to deal with. I bought a bunch of books from Dave, and they were immaculate, very well packaged and arrived super quick! Thanks Dave!

Bought a Variax guitar from John as a present for a friend's son. John couldn't have been more helpful during the deal, and went out of his way to ensure everything went smoothly. Top man to deal with - thanks again, John.

Wow! That's brilliant! Congratulations on winning it.

Just bought a Fender book from Alan. Sent it in super fast time, and was a pleasure to deal with throughout. Thanks mate!

40 years?!! Still one of my fave albums... -
Sold a Squier VMJ to Colin, and it was a nice smooth transaction. He paid very quickly, kept in contact and let me know when it arrived safely. Deal with confidence!
My '79 BB1200 is a P-Bass killer hands down... Lovely basses the BB series.
If ever you fancy selling that, let me know

I've got TI's on 3 Precisions and my Ric (although some people would say that's sacrilege), and I'm just so used to them now, they feel normal. I've tried the La Bella Jamerson Deep Talkin' flats, and they sounded ok, but were too high tension & gauge for me. I've got some of the La Bella lighter flats (760FL, I think) on my Tele bass, and they sound great, and aren't quite as rope-like as the Jamersons. My default is TI's though . As someone above said, if they're good enough for Pino...
